  • Keep in mind that a lot of classic art is not pleasing to look at. It depicts pain, death, torture, misery, demons, the depths of hell, etc....

But, I agree about contemporary art, I'm not convinced they are not faking. The same is true of contemporary dance, it seems to me they are just making it up as they go along. It is not dance if it doesn't have some structure and discipline, and it is not art unless it has the same.

  • I "liked" your video because I didn't have to pay for it...:)

    Fine, fine contemporary art.

  • Yah, art is fukt. I tend to see Adam Sandler movies more as brain candy, and money making machines.

With contemporary art, the idea of it being disgusting lies within the heightened expectations of expecting something beautiful, coupled in with "greed" as the starting point of the creation. Paying to go see a potato on a lampshade for some is not the best use of money. They want to see REAL Brain Candy, and are therefore dissatisfied and disgusted with their experience.

    Thanks for the video.

  • Nice.... I really think you should do more videos, there REALLY good... i actually mean it for once in my pathetic life!!! Jokes... C U SUNDAY!

  • Hi guys, thanks for the feedback! And thank you also for simultaneously proving me wrong and not being condescending!

  • Good art, IMO, plays on people's emotions. I do think that some stuff out there is pretty terrible but it's impossible to draw a valid line discerning art from stuff people made.

Twilight for example does mean a lot to some people. Just because I get nothing from it doesn't make someone else's response to it any less valid. I would argue that Twilight is art. One of the best things about discussing art is difference of opinion because that's when you get to have interesting conversations

  • good point, Modern art was Hipster highjacked art while rich cocksuckers use it for money laundering to retain value claiming as furnishings with art dealers and certificates. It's a scam.

  • You're wrong because you're British. "i'm always going to sound condescending and better than you" -Every British person ever.

  • @fashobro88 Does being racist give you a giant mental orgasm or something? Because so far this video is full of interesting opinions and intelligent arguments -which is extremely rare on Youtube- and you spoiling everything is pretty frustrating.

  • Apart from visually pleasing, art can just be interesting or thought provoking. Art doesn't need to look attractive to be stimulating. There is a world of different art out there, you don't have to like it or understand. Taste is taste, there aren't many rules.

  • how about you make some art that reflects your thoughts on what art is? You are asking a big (old) question, and lots of artists work to question and push what art can be. Nice to hear you're asking these questions at such a young age, keep thinking about it, eventually you'll find your answer. Contemporary art is difficult thing to grasp, most of the world doesn't care to. You really have to want to understand it.

  • @paldoable If the very purpose of art is to question what art itself is, it's going to get pretty repetitive; and if an artist can only think about his own situation, people will lose interest after a while. Imagine a philosopher who only talks of philosophy, no-one would listen to him, because what he says doesn't concern anybody but him.

  • @frcharmouille I wasn't implying that the sole purpose of art is to question what it is. Actually, the only purpose in art is to make whatever you want to make.

Good artists question and try to understand the form, medium and history of art. This informs their practice, and helps explore what their artwork can be. Artists can have any intention with the creative process. Some make art about art, paintings about paintings. Others can make work about everything else in life.

  • @frcharmouille Also to assume something will be automatically repetitive is close minded in a creative sense. Sure somethings things can be overdone, but to question what art has limitless possibilities. Finding a new way to look at art or trying to reconsider what art can be can bring original ideas and push the evolution of art. Its up to talent of the artist to avoid repetition.

  • I think you are right on point but I also think that there is also an appreciation that no one in the present can fully understand until the future on said 'art'. Most great things in the artistic world seem to be passed by until they are fully appreciated and understood. Time is a vital thing to art; as some pieces will not age well, some will ferment like wine, and some will always stink. I try to think, "Will I still like this 20 years from now?"

  • @iliketehinternet: To complement my first post: Your opinion is understandable, 'cause there is a lot of stuff out there, that makes you wonder, BUT before you build up an opinion like that, you should try to inform yourself more. You are generalizing in a way, which is not acceptable, at least for me.

I am not defending stupid things like "potato on a lamp shade". Anyone could make up stupid examples, but that doesn't mean there are no valid art forms, besides those, which are easy to loop at.

  • Comment removed

  • @iliketeinternet: You are talking about really simple-minded examples, like Twilight. But actually you are looking in the wrong direction. There are art forms, which are hard to understand and sometimes horrific to look at, but with valid and important messages. It does not have to be something stupid like a potato on a lamp shape.

I was once in a museum with paintings about the dark past of the church. Burning of witches, crucifixions, torturing, ... Not easy to look at, but important.

  • Smart kid.

  • You hit the nail on the head, don't let the youtube hecklers get to you!

  • I agree!!

  • dude your so right potato on a lamp shade priceless hahahaha

  • you were right in the beginning but at the end you didn't need to go there.

  • Scumbag Kid: Bitches about shit like Twilight,

Asks for something pretty that's easy to understand...

  • @KeenKong9000 He isn't a scumbag kid, he has an excellent point

  • @XxForgotenSinsxX No, he doesn't. It's wildly uninformed. Art has to be aesthetically pleasing and understandable to everyone? The output of that kind of thinking IS Twilight you twat.

  • @KeenKong9000 Actually he does cause its his opinion. Like he said, so a potato on a lamp shade would symbolize as slavery? Really?? I know art is in the eye of the beholder, but things have limits. Real mature on the insults. He didn't think twilight was art. And I agree with him. Not a very creative storyline, or movie...at all

  • @XxForgotenSinsxX You're obviously not very good at this. I'll leave you to our own devices now...

  • Thank you, some one has finally said it. Even better, a young kid. I'm a big art person myself, and where I've looked, seen, heard stuff that people call "art" just isn't. Don't let the negative people badger you on here. You are a smart kid, having a great opinion, yes opinion for every one commenting on his wall, which he has a right to. Since art is a mirror of our society, really shows that a lot of people suck at it these days, and at a lot of other things

  • You are very intelligent for your age. You are smarter then all the middle school teachers in America.

  • purpose of art?

To express yourself, or to provoke thought/feeling. pretty fucking simple.

It's quite easy to put shit on things you dont understand or dont like. Why bother wasting your energy on that when you could just make your own art. If you dont like it, change it.

  • Your parents should be very proud.

  • @MrHeylowdeux I wish i had his parents, or at least went to the same school as he did..

  • I dont think either of you are wrong, just misunderstanding each other. Art doesnt have to be aesthetically pleasing to the senses in order to be considered art or beautiful. How would Starry Night be aesthetically pleasing to a blind person? Or to take a different route: how aesthetically appealing is Guernica to either side of the Spanish Civil War? Depending on who you asked, you'd get probably get very different responses.

  • a kid not saying "like": every 3 words?

    well holy shit.

  • Awesome :-)

  • The mathematics behind the universe are not aesthetically pleasing, but it is artful, not art, but like it and it is beautiful. Personally, Twilight is art, its just garbage art. Not all art deserve respect either imo. It's also what goes into the work. If someone just takes a can of paint and throws it at a wall, it isn't art. It just paint thrown at a wall.

  • potato

  • art (culture) is the mirror of our society

through art (culture) we can define how much have we grown as a society

the problem is...that art these days show how much have we deteriorated as a society

you are still a kid, and you are smart, but u haven't seen the real world...keep thinking with your own mind and express your thoughts and don't let anyone tell you what you should think

if you think that art is displeasing...well "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

  • cool...intresting chat

  • Glad to see there are still people who care about the utter decline in modern art. Now all art is, is finding the most vague way to portray something, like your comment about the potato on the lampshade. Oh and mind if I borrow some of your friends? I mean kids talking about contemporary mediums? Something unheard of in the states. It's all Jersey Shore and Black Ops -_-

  • You aren't wrong. In fact, you're damn clever. Of course, there is slight mistake you make - art is supposed to be expressive: an artist's job is not to create FOR us - it is not li'l Wayne's job to write us songs, it is not Stephanie Meyer's job to write us books, and it is not, well, whoever's job to make us nice pictures. The problem is that they MAKE it their job to, which is why, in the music industry at least, we have a shallow, homogenous, fast-food style culture.

  • Worst of all people start saying that video games are art! Can you believe that? Let me guess: Mario Galaxy is an intimate examination of man's fascination with the stars and his innate curiosity to explore? Shut up! It's dumb, mindless hopping around that serves as an easy serotonin fix for little children or "grown up" losers who can't succeed irl

  • @StoryOfAPanic My farts are art.

  • Art is the expression of creativity, Lil Wayne is the expression of modern niggerism.

  • if you want to see some technically superb contemporary art try searching for george shaw, pictures on the internet really can't justify the amount of depth his pictures have

  • i would like to tell you , that a. you are not in the slightest bit retarded, and b, your views on modern and contemporary are are rather profound for someone your age. i tip my hat to you sir.

  • i would formally like to tell you how much of a retard you are. you are a big retard.

  • @mikeglambin Can't tell if trolling, or a douchebag :|
