Where I once worked in a six story hotel, with two traction elevators The Lobby elevator went to 3,4,,5,6. The 2nd elevator on the "G" level stairway to the lobby,
traveled floors 2,3,4,5,6. Both were overhead 1::1 traction machines with an M.G.
set. Machine room for G elevator was elevated above the Lobby's machine room.
The G elevator had a short stair case next to the hoist way, while the lobby machine's room was in a penthouse on the roof.
@TheTheo58 I recently was at a fairly new building (2005 or so if I remember) with an OTIS elevator, where all electronics besides the engine were placed on the most upper floor (3rd floor) directly next to the elevator doors: we had to open that unit, and with the door open, it started moving: The chopper-sound that came out of it was beautiful ;)

Alot of lifts have a maintenance door by the normal doors. I think if you go through the one on the top floor, you can find the engine, I don't know.
