  • I think that half the fun of playing D&D was that it was like underground back in the day.........now days its like a kids game, but I remember being afraid of telling people that I played, because I didn't want people to think I worshiped satan or something ROTFL!!!

  • I think it's even worst than the actual D&D movies !

  • "Hey it's all imagination!"

    "Is it?"

"Yes. Yes it is. Shouldn't you be rousting a rapist or drug dealer? Getting guns of the street and stopping the perpetual cycle of violence gripping heavily populated urban areas and stop caring about a table top RPG."

"Well, I... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?" *Runs out of room*

  • You know, I wasn't around during the 80's, but other people were talking about this movie, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's not a bad film, and it really doesn't show RPG's in a bad light. Even this detective does a bad job of hating on them, because of his terrible dialogue: Detective "Mazes and Monsters is a far out game" Kid "It's just imagination!" Detective "Is it?" Uh, yeah it IS imagination.

  • Oh that is BULLSHIT!!!

  • Its the Library cop!

I remember when the librarian was a much older woman: Kindly, discreet, unattractive. We didn't know anything about her private life. We didn't want to know anything about her private life.

  • Ack, it's Mayor Vaughn from Jaws!

  • This sort of panic STILL exists today

only it's not with dungeons and dragons it's with (insert any game made by Rockstar here)

BTW i LOVE rockstar games for that i HATE hiliary clinton

  • Mazes and Monsters killed my brother!

  • Naaaaaaaaaaarm.

  • IS IT?

  • Ah, the Satanic panic of the 80's, the ruination of many an otherwise happy childhood.

I was too young to be into D&D RPGs at the time, but the same brand fundie zealot fearmongering caused my mom to give away half my toy collection, which included nearly the complete set of both the vintage Star Wars and Masters of the Universe lines!

  • Mazes and Monsters sounds scary. I think i will stick to D&D.

  • Mazes and monsters is a fair out game should become a meme.lol

  • Yes... Yes it is. It is far out, but also just imagenation.

  • Stupid Jack Chick era of destroying imagination!

  • years later it turned out the kid this was based on wasn't sent delusional because of D&D, but in fact intentionally went to commit suicide because he as gay

  • It's all imagination

That's like saying GTA is a work of fiction and we shouldn't take it so seriously

  • @Kolbatsu Well it is a work of fiction. And you shouldn't take it so seriously.

  • @Moosh50 I was actually being sarcastic. I can't really type sarcasm

  • @Kolbatsu Oh, sorry, my bad actually :/ My sarcasm detector has been acting up.

  • @Moosh50 not at all.

  • ...I was 10 when "Mazes & Monsters" first came on t.v.....I started playing AD&D in 1981 when I was still 9....I grew up the later part of my childhood being accused of Devil worship, being suicidal, and being delusional all because of playing roleplaying games....if you are in your late thirties early forties and have always been a "fanboy" and played rpg's then this t.v. movie was not missed...:)

  • Hey, it's all imagination!

    Is it?

    No sh*t sherlock! XD

  • Is it.....?

  • Of course it's not imagination, why just last week I was going through the local labyrinth and killing Orcs and Goblins!

  • The devil can steal your soul, but not if you roll a 6 or higher on your soul evasion skill.

  • Yeah don't you know that like 90% of campaigns are about GOOD aligned heroes fighting EVIL DEMONS. sheesh

  • This and other corny, antiquated English slang tonight at 11!

  • Its just imagination

    Is it?

YES IT IS MAN!!! Dont you fucking see me cutting orcs in real life and fucking Elves

  • I watched this movie for my birthday with my D&D friends- it was hilarious. I heard you are doing a review of it. Good luck.

  • Don't trust that cop. He's just lining you up as a smorgasbord on the Fourth of July.

  • at 0:31 it Ken hair!

  • I'm a Christian, born and raised; but D&D isn't a Satanic game - take me for example. Me being a real-life Minister I always play the Cleric/Priest classes, or a Paladin. Tom Hanks is even a Cleric in this movie (a movie based on the media hype, not the actual events). I think parents just used the hype as an excuse to keep their kids from using their creative sparks early in life - imagine that, parents stopping kids from doing something by lying about it, tsk, tsk.

  • The Spoonyone is a far-out dude.

  • D and d- Killing orcs and dragons

Old testament- Killing babies and rape victims.

    Which is more dangerous?

  • For some reason I can't help but laugh when the cop replies: Mazes and monsters is a 'far out game'. XDD

  • Do you know it is a succes? --> Its at

    watch last movies. com

  • Maiming and killing, eh? Don't cops do that every so often? Why should they get to have all the fun? Why can't the rest of us partake?

    Mayhem sets us free. }:-D

  • @IggyHazard

Maiming? Well of course, that is why police officers usually carry a fire-axe with them on patrols.

  • @ThatMan0verThere I would so become a cop just for that purpose if I got to carry a fire axe around on patrols...especially if I was a specialized cop who hunted zombified Neo-Nazi S&M punks.

    }:-D

It would be like Mad Max meets Killing Flo0r. Which for me would be PARADISE!!

    \8-D

  • Oh comeon! So people get killed over a board game, so what? Half of the shooters in chicago are inspired by FPS's and they havent made a half-ass movie about it! Stupid over christain people thinking D&D gamers will become devil worshipers. ITS A GAME!

    dectective: is it?

    me: GET OUT!!!

  • "Monsters? You think they look like Monsters to you?!" SH-3.

  • @Sorrki Nice reference.

  • Have you seen a little girl?

  • Evidently that guy didn't -have- an imagination.

  • this movie just earned 50 points on the geek cred score card!

  • Ahahaha, the blonde guy reminds me of Trey Parker in Orgazmo!

    "Swords, spells, maiming, killing..."

"It's all IN THE BIBLE TOO!"

  • Does he want that caught and hung up by his Buster Browns?

  • Mazes & Monsters is un-fucking-believable.

  • Mazes & Monsters is in my spot, sir.

  • I heard that, Mazes & Monsters!

  • This Mazes & Monsters is a far-fucking- out game!

  • Birds can't talk.

  • lesson here: never think

  • What a laughable attempt to understand a counterculture that the film's writers had no idea about at all.

    Far out.

  • I find that whole "Dungeons and Dragons is a devilish suicide cult" moral panic from the 1980s to be a big beacon to the aliens: "Don't bother searching for other intelligent life forms, not enough to be worth it on Earth."

  • Heh, that reminds me of that great punchline in Monty Python's "Galaxy song":

So remember when you´re feeling very small and insecure, how amazingly unlikely is your birth. And pray that there´s intelligent life somewhere up in space, because there´s bugger all down here on earth!

  • Imagination=The limitless void of unlimited power over itself.

  • mazes and monsters is unfucking belivable!

  • @samuriazombie IS it?

  • @samuriazombie No, it's far-out.

  • lighten up man, don't make me cast a spell on you

  • The Spoonyone is a pretty far-out guy.

  • Mazes & Monsters kills people, it's true. But there is no killer shark problem in Amity.

  • YES IT IS!

  • I remember seeing this as a kid on TV. I was thinking 'WOW Mazes and Monsters!? sign me the fuck up for that shit!" Then I as I watched it, I was like WHAT THE FUCK! This is almost as big a let down as that shitty Star Wars holiday special.

  • Is it!?

  • Too funny. That cop reminds me of Mr. Bookman - the library detective.

  • LOL

only crazy people would play a game called 'mazes and monsters' anyway

  • It's hilarious that this movie singlehandedly promoted LARPing to a world that didn't yet understand what it was.

  • what's LARPing?

  • Live Action Role Playing. It's where people actually dress up in costumes and sometimes carry around props, acting out their characters and battles. Recently there's been a fairly thriving community which holds games the same way people play paintball, with designated locations, personalized equipment, and now a standardized system of rules.

  • Check out the movie Monster Camp, it's a documentery on LARPing like Trekkies was for Star Trek.

  • this cop scares me...he really seems to think these kids can cast spells and poison people to death!

  • Fuck! Video Games Rock if people cant handle it they can fuck themselves!!!

  • fail

  • ZOMG...THE GUY FROM JAWS!

  • Ah, gotta love the 80s: ADHD is caused by the child not being spanked enough, D&D can make you kill yourself, short shorts aren't gay. Good times...

  • oooookkkkkkkkk.

  • Funny. Back then parents were worried about their kids using "spells" and worshipping "demons". Now, parents let their kids play video games where the object of the game is to rape and kill people on the street. In the 1980's parents feared Ozzy Osbourne. Now, parents want to be like Flavor Flav and have a harem of phat ass bitches in the house. Our society sucks.

  • Where have I seen that Fred from scooby doo lookalike before?

  • what was the point of that? haha

  • Well, Mazes and Monsters IS a far out game. Far out and groovy and outta sight, man.

  • Shut your ass up old man!!! D&D is an awesome game!!!

  • am I the only one that thought Mazes and Monsters condemned the witch hunt against DnD instead of supporting it? After all, the police assumed it was fucked up mazes and monsters murder, when actually it was just a kid in pain dealing with his own issues. I think the movie doesn't blame DnD for that.

  • Looks like Stifler.

  • "Swords, poison, spells, battles, maiming, killing"-Hey, you just summed up Judges, both books of Samuel, and Kings 1 AND 2!

  • lol this just sounds like a film that was created to hate D&D and anyone who playes it just like the Samurai Zombie Nation might've been something japanese producers did cause they were pissed off at America at the time of release, but then again I don't know. I know years ago D&D was hated and associated strongly with the devil, though I don't see the link. Perhaps they thought it was against God as one of the commandments was "Do not build idols that draw woreship from the lord" or something.

  • A good portion of the christen extremists think that spells and magic in general are satanic. it's probably the same people who bitch and mown about Harry Potter.

  • yeah like in Spoony's awsome thing of the week about black summer I saw the powers on one of the clips saying "God is the potter, not harry" and I had to wonder "Exactly in which book does harry suggest, shout or even write down that he's God?"

  • "It's all imagination"

    "Is it's?"

"YES IT'S FUCKING IMAGENTATION YOUR THE CRAZY ONE THINK IT'S MORE THEM IMAGENTION"

  • speeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelling

  • Cool story bro

  • Sounds like Episode 6 of Paranoia Agent was reversed.

  • WELL, IS IT?!

  • It's true, D&D turned me into a murderous psychotic.

  • are u sure it wasn't just the care bears?

  • The main thing to remember is that Mazes and Monsters was FICTIONAL. It was based on a book which in turn was very loosely based off of early accounts of James Dallas Egbert III which turned out to be false. My advice is to read Michael A. Stackpole's _The Pulling Report_ and get some facts from a place called Planet Reality.

  • And my personal advice is to read Spoony's own rant on this gargantuan piece of shit movie that he put on his website.

I can't stop laughing at how this crap keept contradicting itself by making Mazes & Monsters (M&M?!) actually seem like a consequence and not a cause for the troubles these kids had. And of course that Spoony's sarcasm also helps a lot in the process ;).

  • Making fun of the movie is easy. However one must not forget that are REAL people in positions of power who believe this nonsense is real. Thankfully once Pulling died in 1997 most of the steam went out of the anti-D&D movement though there are other nutbars out there who want to blame everything but their own upbringing for their kid's problems.

  • Oh yeah, we all know that there's always something to put the blame on: rock&roll, comic books, movies, D&D, videogames, Harry Potter, the Smurfs (?).

Because everyone was so well behaved a few years ago, even though there still were a lot of the same idiots claiming that the world was going to hell in a hand basket just because of "X", "Y" and "Z".

  • "It's all imagination"

    "Is it?!"

Now I understand why my folks disliked D&D when I was 12.

    PS Hail Satan

  • Detective:"Is it?"

    [takes his Prozium]

    Detective: "It is."

  • HAHA. That detective needs to learn of the powers of imagination from the greatest hero of all SpongeBob.

  • he would probably mop the floor with him before taking his advice.

  • dude, you saw what happened to Squidward when he used his imagination

  • Lol That was his best jack webb Impersonation.....Is It?

  • That detective has my favorite line in the whole movie, and that's saying quite a bit considering the movie.

  • That detective has my favorite line in the whole movie, and that's saying quite a bit considering the movie.

  • I think they should put a ban on marbles in the right light someone could confuse one with a gobbstopper.

  • This game will raise the voices of mothers if all that isn't imaginary like Detective Retard said it wasn't.

  • "Is it?"

    Whooooaaa! BLOWING. MY. MIND.

    Go find a clue, Detective.

  • oh yes, D&D is the work of the devil! we'll have to burn it and all those unholy harry potter books since pple are obviously too dumb to tell the difference between fantasy and reality. while you're at it, cancel superman and batman episodes, cuz kids are also dumb and will obviously try to fly by jumping out the window!

  • people acutely believed that D&D players would become ax murders. I know some how are assholes but non who are ax murders... well there was that time that Gary... Anyway 9 out of ten of us are fine 10!

  • nice haircut detective. 2 bucks

  • Detective: Swords, maiming, killing, vorpal blades, dire animals, prestige classes, cross-classes, ACs, dodge bonuses, power attacks, rapid shots, automatic crossbows, artifacts, NPCs, fire elementals, and exploding runes!

Kid: At least it's not LARPing!

Detective: (Shivers run down his spine): I guess you're right.

  • LOL

  • I wanted to play D&D after I watched this movie! I've been playing since 1986 and I've NEVER met anyone that couldn't discern between reality and fantasy. If anyone meets someone who has this problem, kick them in the crotch and ask them if it that was real or imagination. :) Kharolis the Elf

  • lol, ill keep that in mind.

  • The best line in this movie is from Daniel (the blonde guy.)

Dorky Sophomore kid: I want to do comedy (referring to his character's acting skills. I'm not turning out to be the leading man type though...it would help if I looked like you, not to mention what it'd do for my social life

Daniel: My social life is no big deal...really...everyone always kids me about being the great makeout champion.

  • Killing maiming. I've never had any maiming in my RPG career. But then again I don't really play DnD. No, I play Warhammer. Now that's a nice safe, non-sacrilegious game for the kids to get behind. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! *deranged smile* Yep, nothing wrong there.

  • are you fucking rich kid? I looked at Warhammer sets and they are really expensive.

    The figures are awesome though

  • Is it a far out game with swords. . .poison, spells, battles, maiming, and killing?

  • Sounds like something I would love

  • you and me both

  • yeah warhammer is the best game ever!

"brake every bone! crush every skull! Drink the blood, drink the blood!" - Goblin Fanatic

  • I thought D&D was a far out game

Is Mazes and Monsters the 2nd edition?

  • No it's just the name of the movie. Since the makers of Dungeons and Dragons weren't keen on a movie portraying their product as a recruiting ground for homicidal maniacs, they didn't back the movie and the makers had to name it something similar. Hence, Mazes and Monsters (MnM), instead of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD).

  • I wanna play MnM and be a sprite!

  • "Hey, it's all imagination!"

    "Is it?"

"No shit." What, has he never seen TV, a comic, read a book or watches a movie?

  • My friend has this on DVD. It's so bad, it's funny. My favorite quote from the movie, "BEWARE OF THE SACRILEGE!"... or "There's blood on the knife."

  • Got it on VHS, no idea where I got it. I always use it and "Bosom Buddies" when dicussing the high points of TH's career. Pardu rules!

  • This movie sucked! Someone bought this one for me from a bargin bin. It was so terrible!

  • I love ppl like this that look at the game and go, "O MY GOD YOU CAN IFGHT AND THERES BLOOD BABD BAD BAD!!!" and its like ummmmits like all those T.V shows you watch sir........ITS.....NOT.....REAL....DUH!

  • When the cop says "Is it?" I'm expecting the other guy to say "...Well, yeah. Duh."

Because that's what a smart person would do.

  • It is safe for me to say that M&M was the worst Tom Hanks movie i ever seen. It was disappointing too. I honestly though it was going to be an action thriller where everyone ends up in an alternate reality. I've always heard how bad B-Movies could get but never thought they get M&M bad.

  • I've spent half my life gaming (in my 30's now). I've also spent half my life trying to watch this movie all the way through and I JUST... CAN'T... DO IT!

IT'S AWFUL! IT'S FUCKING TERRIBLE! I'VE TRIED! TRIED SO HARD!

"Barney" had more engaging plotlines than this thrill ride.

    Kill me now.

  • Even Barney would run away screaming from this movie. And don't bother watching it in full, you will lose your mind just like Tom Hanks did.

  • Consider yourself lucky. I was 12 when "Mazes & Monsters" came out, and I had to watch it with my mother because she knew I was into RPG's. After, she asked me what I thought. I told her it was a great comedy.

    She wasn't impressed. XD

  • @IsawaMitaka You know, this is all the parents fault i'll show you. The parents didn't like dungeons and dragons because of the demonic pictures on the original books. So kids made fun of the completely obssessed players thus taking them down the wrong path. So its not the game, it's the fact that people are retarded. It's like saying reading lord of the rings and rolling dice at the same time is the work of the devil, it would look weird but certanly not the work of the devil!

  • @IsawaMitaka Yeah, my mom had a similar reaction when I called Terms of Endearment a "Feel-good comedy for the whole family" XD

  • @IsawaMitaka MURDERER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is it? Owned.

  • I Lol'ed at your comment

  • Mazes and Monsters just killed me right then an there.EVIL!!!

  • *exasperated* that's kinda far out?

lol that delievery is soo funny.

  • Anti gamers have a way of not allowing us gamers to take them seriously.

  • Yes the production was awful. Be sure to check out my full review of the movie. It's quite exhausting... -The Chinese Vampire

  • is that the film staring Tom Hanks?
