  • if governments were frugal in the way they spend tax payers cash we wouldn't have the existing conditions and the nano-tech is already being used in in other materials in silicon valley california with the replicating of plastic polymers and such they're claiming the genome replication is not impossible remember tv is only 60 yrs old cellphones 20 or so the isralies are copying dna already mix cloning and nano tech you could grow an army like tomatos, money they just print,or borrow

  • we are on our way to 3 world war, and if its nuclear, its better not to stay after it.

  • human/cyborg type will probably fall to the way side when genetics is crossed with nano technology:ie a humanoid that can breath under a1000 fathoms of water while mining volcanic funnels for precious minerals and not be bothered by the heat. a clone that heals it self virtually instantly, through nano-tech,but will they be sentient beings US legislation currently says you build it you own it "do androids count electric sheep",phillip k.dick"bladerunner"sci-fi?it's always gonna be boots on ground

  • @nodillinger I don't think that Cyborgs will be completely left behind by nano tech and genetics. Even the most ingeniously enhanced organic material will have limitations compared to metals. Apart from that, yes, such beings will surely be made.

When (there is likely no if) those cyborgs/android will become sentient there will be necessary changes to law. If we get those easy is a whole other question.

  • @CaraDanaellea it's my understanding that nano-tech when perfected will be able to replace bio-matter at a almost instantaneous rate replicating upon itself from a molecular level at the speed of a super-computer each cell of the organism, literally a microscopic chip at the sub-atomic level,a limb is lost through trauma,it grows back before the pain is felt.a humanoid injected with the nano-chips which spread through the bio-form as anti-bodies would, till it's primed for self-repair.peace out

  • @nodillinger Possible, but extremely energy hungry. Don't forget that it not only has to be efficient it also has to be economically reasonable. Why go to the length of engineering said nano-technology when metals can do the same job easier and cheaper.

I'm not saying that the nano-tech wouldn't probably be better, but unless there is something the cyborg can't do, the android will not be built for money reasons alone I'm afraid.

  • I used to be a shipbuilder, and have worked new construction and repair on many U.S. warships, and I can tell you that it only takes a small fleet to control and destroy any enemy anywhere in the world, For example a DDG can track and destroy anyone anywhere in the world with the aid of satellites and drones, and they all have some sort of A.I. for defencive reations. Its actually kind of scary

  • @tonymengela That is scary, especially since the book already tells about warships becoming obsolete due to far more advanced technologies. There will be cyborg-soldiers faster than we think...

  • @CaraDanaellea I hate to tell you this but it is already here. I feel like we live on a penal colony. Technology is far more advanced than what is let on. They want to control people not free them.

  • @tonymengela Yeah, some implants are of course already in existence and technology is always farther ahead in the classified fields than in the public domain. I never denied that, all I say is that it will become massive in the next decades.

Normal humans are starting to be seriously outdated.

  • @CaraDanaellea yes agreed, and who knows what human experimentation is going on over here, after all thousands of people go missing without a trace over here in the U.S.

  • I bet dollars to doughnuts that any discussion about robot`s rights will be delayed until the latest possible time and then some. At leas that`s my prediction based on such weired things as - you know - reading history books. nonetheless nice recommendation.

    take care

    silk

    ;-))

  • @blacksilkblacksilk Of course these discussions will be held off way to long, but that is not the only thing the book is about thankfully. I wouldn't want to read something that is only jumping on the moral side of robotics. Gladly this one is a roller-coaster through all possible fields and therefore I'm quite in love with it :)

  • Robots have been fighting wars for us since the 1940's, although their missions have until recently been suicide missions. The funny thing is that people don't realize this, despite the fact that many of the small robots people build for fun these days, or use in research, use fundamentally the same sort of systems to guide them.

  • @SAsgarters I was aware of some forms of drones in the military but before that book I didn't know the extent of unmanned armed vehicles in use and that the commanding staff used computer maps completely akin to strategy video games...

  • @CaraDanaellea I have to admit, I wasn't thinking of drones or remote controlled vehicles (although they do qualify as robots depending on the definition), but rather on machines that are capable of some level of autonomous decision making (which also qualifies as AI!), no matter how basic. These would include nearly all guided weapons, from missiles to torpedoes to even mines.

I am using robot in a fairly broad sense here and some undoubtedly would disagree with the definition.

  • The first primitive cruise missiles were used during WW I by the way.

  • @SAsgarters Yes, you are using robot in another sense than I do. If you include guided missiles than robots have been with us a long time. I was more referring to strong AI, the type of AI that can't be distinguished from natural forms of intelligence.

I was speaking of robots that disarm explosives, patrol areas, observe and hunt enemies and even fire without any remote control.

  • We seem to have a really hard time granting human rights to actual human beings. Convincing folks to grant them to software is going to be an uphill battle.

  • @tetsubo57 I guess that depends on the opinion of the military machines soon going to have human level intelligence. These might have a bit more possibilities to claim their rights than many underprivileged humans today...

  • @CaraDanaellea I think true human levels of software are a way down the line. Quite possibly after I have passed. Super clever and useful software will be achieved of course. But true emulation? I don't believe it is just around the corner.

  • @tetsubo57 The point when AI becomes equal or superior to human intellect is called the singularity in the field of robotics and how far away from it we are is a point of heavy debate. But the point when robots are at the point of animals isn't far off.

It all depends on how you define what constitutes sentience.

  • @CaraDanaellea No argument there. But we don't grant animals many rights.

  • @tetsubo57 Sad but true, well as said, maybe the robots will be in a better position to argue than the animals...

  • now this is cool hehe :)

  • @tattooskin72 Glad you like it, it's really a cool book and doesn't seem to be known widely.

  • @CaraDanaellea I was just remembering I need to look up some recipes for you. Though I was wondering if you have ever tried Vietnamese food before? Much of it has all the qualities you love... heat and sour. Most of the food is very rich in flavor.

  • @tattooskin72 I believe I haven't really tried Vietnamese food, might be an idea for how to celebrate my bachelor in a few months time. On the other hand... we are way too cheap to go out to a restaurant so maybe I'll cook something up myself ;D

Thanks for the tip and I'm always open for any kind of recipe.

  • As battlefields become more and more unmanned with the advances in robotic technology, war will eventually stop being about how many people you can kill.

It will eventually be about who has the strongest robot.

So war will be some kind of sporting event where the whole world watches while giant robots beat the crap out of each other.

Wow, the future is gonna be awesome.

  • @ninjatanuki I wouldn't be so sure about that. Never underestimate the human psyche and the problems with "bugs in the software". Not to speak of the fact that AI has a hard time with even simple pattern matching problems. To an AI all humans look alike, deciding to slow the tank down for a child or speeding it up to run over the guy with the bazooka might seem easy for us, well, turns out it isn't for robots...

  • Sounds like this book is right up my alley!

  • @kriegschwert It totally is :) It actually made me think of you because there is so much about piloting and airplanes in there.

  • lmao wierd for war i get it now i clicked on it and was thinking YOU WAR? WTF IS HAPPENING!?!? then i woke up hehehehe

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 The title is catching so I used it as a bit of free publicity ;)

To tell you a probably surprising fact, I always wanted to start a career in the military but Germany is the only country that would accept me and I am NOT going back. I dreamt of becoming a pilot when I was younger, now I wish I could become an information officer.

Maybe I'll get a post as a military psychologist with my specialisation in risk psychology and already having talked to the army research staff.

  • @CaraDanaellea rebecca was in the german army for 3 years she was wounded though she dident like being enlisted she does like germany though not people in berlin but the people in the smal towns but she lived in munich and worked at a tavern for a while

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 Wounded while being in the German army? Did she break a leg while hauling sandbags to stem some flood in the hinterlands? In Germany we use to joke that's all the army does...

How anybody could like xenophobic, always grumpy and unfriendly Germans won't go into my head...

  • @CaraDanaellea she actully was shot by a (i dont use this word to often but it angers me) she was shot by a "terrorist raghead" is what she called him oh it wasent pretty....i remember getting a call from her telling me that she was wounded...i wanted her to have someone pick me up and take me there that day i was gonna take on all of al kaida i was pissed i am not allowed to say what operation it was but i have flashbacks of that day...

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 I'm sorry to have made fun of it! I seriously didn't know that this was even possible in Germany, only shows how little such things are getting reported to the public...

  • @CaraDanaellea oh its alright she took the bitch out with a panzerfuast anti tank device

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 O-O I guess that settled it...

  • @CaraDanaellea ja i think it did hehehehehe

  • sy-fi geek + military = termenator series LOL

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 Only that a war against machines is already under way. Not because of them having rebelled though, mind you ;)

In Iraq for example unmanned drones are bombing and soldier units have sniffing robots to detect automatic weapons. Other robots scout, called ravens, and another one creates shields of bullets to reflect damage. The US army utilises a world wide computer map for tracking troupes and enemies, just like you do in strategy computer games, sci-fi is already here...
