  • (Since we're all talking about it...) I really, really like this art style! That's actually what drew me to the manga in the first place.

  • Yaichi is so cute

  • cant thier be sex romance every good anime needs some love and action like two guys fight over the same girl over and over again that sounds like a good anime to watch

  • @loveanddarknessful

That sounds retarded, and there are many animes like that( stupid storyline of 2 boys fighting over an annoying girl) which is for little kids like yourself (at least your brain is). Not everything in life is about SEX or romance.

  • @kirika20 Yes, that's right. Feed the troll!

  • From the moment that i saw Mt. Fuji on the intro this anime had me hook, line, and sinker. What can i say about House of Five Leaves? Well, if you're into rock'em sock'em action, over the top super sayan powers, and bombastic fanatic humor, this anime is not for you. However, for anyone who likes a good old fashioned story of espionage, deceit, betrayal, reconciliation, and friendship, please enjoy. This anime was my favorite of 2010 and in my overall top 10.

  • Damn, I LOVE this fucking art style. It kind of reminds me of mine with more finesse to it. Fascinating story too, definitely watching more. Very different than the usual 14-year-old boy with hidden powers saves the world bullshit. Good shit.

  • The ending theme is really great!

  • My review 6.5/10. However, this is hindsight because I haven't watched the whole season. What was lacking for me was the music (melancholic as expected but quirky), sound-effects, and fluency (fight scene). The pros would be the plot is OKAY to me (a bit out of the usual with a timid samurai). Art design is stellar (beautiful expressions). Colors are comparable to Samurai Champloo (washed out and water paint-esque if not). Dialogue isn't too deep or immersive but fit the characters in persona.

  • Wow, I've only watched three minutes so far, and I LOVE the art.

It has a sketchy, natural feeling to it- as though someone captured bits of real peoples lives and froze them in time, to watch over and over. The glint of an eye, the slant of a limp hand- it feels so natural.

This is why I love seinen.

  • haterz gonna hate..but I love the style...its diffrent :) THIS can be an example to use when ppl say "all anime is the same, they look copy pasted" well this one IS anime and its NOT like the others..its one of the treasures :)

  • I FUCKING LOVE THE ART. ARE PEOPLE REALLY COMPLAINING?

  • I have been intending to read this series manga for a while now... I liked Natsume Ono's other series, like Not Simple and Coppers. I wonder if I will actually watch all the anime though, I generally just stick with manga.

  • this is anime "art" is crap i like the idea of haveing normal eyes and diffrent looks and etc but this crap is just rediculous the characters dont look alive they look like walking zombies or major crack heads

  • Why would ppl complain about the art? That's its STYLE....= = it's meant to be like that! Not every anime has sparkly large eyes like Sailor Moon....The art style fits the laid back storyline, that's all it matters

  • one of my favorite anime ever....it really moved me.

  • why does their hair have to be so fucking awfull....

  • @sicnessification That's how they did their hair back then what can you expect? xD

  • 5 leaves? Must be weed.

  • Daisuke Namikawa's voice is so sexy! Kawaii!

  • the animation makes them look ape like

  • Wait, this isn't some gay anime is it? Cause that's the vibe I'm getting so I don't think I'll watch it.

  • @StatuesBleedingGreen

Don't know if you've finished it already, but if not, don't worry; there's no bromance in this anime. It keeps this rather low key feel throughout the anime, but I thought it was a pleasant watch.

  • @Anciental Awesome, thanks for letting me know cause I stopped watching it. Think I'll get into it again.

  • fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh comercials! D:<

  • intro.. too long! I don't wanna wait to watch it! D;< lol

  • i like the art in this... i also like anime about the Edo period (im a japanese history otaku).

  • Why're there mouths so "long"?

  • wow i really like this anime, its a little different from the anime I'm use to watching but its also really Good I also like how it is drawn and seeing the Samurai era.

  • This is the first time I've seen art like this in an anime, and it looks interesting. But it has me depressed...like the character. Maybe the gloomy will go away...I like the muted colours and not the bright vibrant colours you normally see. Hey, he beat them up with blood splaater. Nice. It's also nice to see traditional Japanese dress. I agree, why did he tell him about his family? If he didn't ask, don't say anything. I almost didn't want to see this, but now I'm interested.

  • I agree, prefer a little time, and a little less action. Plot and character are more important than blood splashing.

  • Its like everyone got that "Falling on hard times" expression 'bout the eyes

I love the style this anime is using, its like if you're a true fan of anime excepting any and all types of anime styles shouldn't be hard to do

  • @ladymusiq its qit simpol realy....ivv come to exscek the unexspekted and to take in good and bad art...as long as the story line is good i like it...if not i realy dont care if its a good art form anime or not. i care about story, not art..the arts just a bonus ^_^

  • @ladymusiq Accepting.* I make exception when it comes to certain art styles. I don't really connect with either the over-realistic style, or the Astroboy style. I like something in between.

This art style reminds me too much of the Okami ink paintings.

  • Frog faces.

  • loveeee the style, its refreshing

  • I wish people would stop bitching about the art. = = It's rare to find good anime that doesn't have the huge KAWAII DESU eyes, or where everyone is fabulously gorgeous. People have got to start appreciating different art other than average anime style. = =

Rant aside, I'm loving the anime so far~ The manga was fantastic, and I was absolutely thrilled to find out it was being turned into an anime~!

  • @smellslikedeath where did you read the manga? is it in stores or where did you read it online? thanks

  • @nekokichi11

    I bought the manga from a local book shop. o u o

But you can probably find it somewhere online to read, if it isn't in any bookstores near you.

  • @smellslikedeath What if I don't want to find it online? I can make my own choices. Quit telling me how to live my life.

  • @MeijiKendo11

    Okay. :U

  • Comment removed

  • @smellslikedeath I agree I find this style intersting and pretty refreshing..along with no overly done fanservice on bubbly females X3

  • This anime styling is kinda eerie...but very intresting no?^^

  • i have only seen a min and i like is so far

  • I love the style of this.

    Unique anime ftw~ <3

  • I think this is pretty cool....love the laid back art which reminds me of mushishi ...some of u kids are probably just used to watching shounen anime...I prefer the seinin anime/manga :P

  • @Tyrande I loooove mushishi

  • I was a little worried about how Ono's style would look animated, but this is really beautiful and true to the original look. It's gorgeous!

  • this anime looks so unique

  • and how come everytime i try to make it fullscreen it loses all the load i had? wtf?

  • @tarjay35 it's because it's changing the quality to a higher pixeling for better viewing, your best bet is to due full screen right in the beginning and change it to which ever setting you want it to be.

  • @ekd4594

thanks! it's ok though i fixed it now

  • ok, i usually don't complain about ads but these shits keep freezing and i have to restart it! dammit!

  • why is the drawings too ugly.. it's because iv'e seen a lot of wonderful anime that i find this one bad. i'm not a hater i'm just saying

  • eveyones ugly LOL

  • does anybody know the name of the theme song and who sings it?

  • whats with their fish mouths?

  • Wow wow wow, I'm lovin' this anime so far. I'm a huge fan of Natsume Ono's style seeing it animated is wonderful!

  • I didn't find the first five or so minutes hugely interesting, but then I realized that what I was watching was competent storytelling! In an anime! I had been waiting for whatever giant penis monster to jump in and start raping everybody, and that was my mistake.

You have to dial down the white noise in your brain and get ready to pay attention, because this show isn't going to shove its plot down your throat.

  • Plan on getting any dvd's in on this series?

  • Augh, it's really bothering me of how people keep saying things about the art style. If you don't like it or if it bothers you that much just don't watch. Simple. Anyway, I'm REALLY happy that this manga got it's chance to turn into an anime. I find the art style very appealing and I'm hoping that more of Natsume Ono's work gets turned into animation (omg like Not Simple being turned into a movie? I'd love that!).

  • @PachiMichi i love they way the artist drew this anime; its SO different and their lips are huge.

  • @PachiMichi Seconded SO HARD. I love love love Natsume Ono

  • I like this type of animation, though I still enjoy animation from Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Code Geass and Spice & Wolf

  • why do the eyes look so CREEPY in this O___O

  • He said that girl was beautiful and I was like "Noooooooo." O.O

  • @fuckXtheXsystem bahaha same, the mouthes drive me crazy though DX their too low and wide when relaxed lol

  • I really love this style! I can understand how it's not to some people's tastes because the characters aren't that overly moe-moe like everyone's used to, but I think it's truely beautiful! But then again, I've always liked animes like this :P ( Mononoke is a great one, I suggest you check it out! Not Princess Mononoke but Mononoke the anime :D)

  • I seen animation like this before cant remember where but this is true Animation.

  • This anime is fantastic! As much as I like watching generic shonen and shojo anime, which are cute and quick mood-picker-uppers, I love anime with distinct aesthetic styles, moods and story-lines, like Monster, Gankutsuou, Samurai Champloo, etc.

Too bad this anime only has 12 episodes. Another good short series is Jyu-Oh-Sei.

  • for some reason this does not play on my Android phone.

  • my pc is not loading this so i can't watch it. unfair

  • heeyy this is pretty smoove.. i love hoe everyone look like their on acid n shrooms lool

  • i like this alot

  • scotamiran: have you seen Mononoke (not Princess Mononoke) or Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales? They're both really good, you might like them. For manga, I'd suggest checking out Nightmare Inspector/Yumekui Kenbun.

Everybody: If you've enjoyed this show, go look up "noitaminA" on wikipedia and check out the stuff on that list. It's mostly really good stuff with the same target audience.

    Man, I miss this show...it was sooooo good. ;_;

  • THAT'S A LOTTA WHEAT THINS

  • the style of this anime is like the moomins!

  • O SNAP FUNIMATION MAKES FUCKING AWESOME ANIMES!

  • @jesseSager123

FUNimation does not make anime. Although, if they do, they did not make this one. They obtain licenses to distribute anime here in North America, providing subtitles and voice overs. And the most messed up part, damn property makes no sense, releasing sub-licenses to other English distributors in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Isn't finding information on the internet nice.

  • the art style in this anime is different, or atleast the character's are. idk why but based on the art style i think this is gonna turn into one twisted series

  • yeah first episode in, and i already like it. im constantly on the search for an anime similar to Mushi-shi, and i guess whenever i come across one thats, as zerozero calls it, a seinen anime, i always give it a shot.

btw anyone know of an anime similar to mushi-shi both in terms of content AND visual style? i mean, im not saying EXACTLY the same, but similar?

  • the art reminds me of ristorante paradiso

  • This anime is okay but nothing impressive yet I still like watching Tatami Galaxy way better. :(

  • I DONT CARE ABOUT STUPID POPTARTS! D:<

  • This show actually seems pretty good. The whole...bromance...thing is fine, but if they go the way of Edo Era Brokeback Mountain, I may not be able to take it. lol

    P.S.: ...that's what she said...

  • @PyroProspectParagon holy crud..how did you know??

    btw...tat's wat she said...too.

  • I just do not like the music to the ending credits.. everything else is great. Hope to enjoy the rest... minus the music at the end...

  • @motina10 Agreed, it doesn't fit the anime. The opener too.

  • @epsilonzeta12

Although, I do like the opener.

  • Beautiful development of the story arc...great characters.

  • Awh. the kitty looks so cute ;D

  • the first thought i had about this anime was that it was about a bunch of emo frog-people... but i love it anyway :3

  • not much for the art style but the story seem interesting. I will definitely be continuing watching it.

  • AH!!! Ono, Natsume!!! I would recognize this artist anywhere, I love her yaoi.

  • this anime is awesome i can't wait till the end so all can be revealed

Finally a mature not a-typical perverted anime.

  • pretty kool and no boob shots. +1

  • #VIDEOPOSTERID#, I can't stand that youtube does not permit full tv shows and movies. I have to head to stream episodes (dot) net to watch tv shows and movies instead while I would prefer to watch all of it on youtube.

House of Five Leaves (SUB) - 1 - In Name Only

  • This anime seems really interesting. I love the artwork.

  • why is every one complaining about the action in this anime. I don't know if it's an American anime stereotype, but not every anime is like dragon ball z or naruto. I've only seen this one episode, but it's clearly a more seinen anime. This type of anime is story driven and usually deals with more mature topics. If people just want to watch action, then they need to stick with shonen anime.

  • @Zer0Zero

    *Clap clap clap*

    Thank you

  • @Zer0Zero Thank You for saying that^^ This show is excellent without drawnout fighting

  • @Zer0Zero

you're right. it's just that those people has not grown up. Basically Shonen means young boy, so they haven't matured.

  • @Zer0Zero Unfortunately...yeah, it's more of a stereotype. We like to watch things 'SPLODE (not a typo for "explode"). But I happen to like this episode...I plan on watching more of it.

  • @Zer0Zero this isn't an American anime stereotype this was actually made in Japan by Japanese people on the channel named TVTokyo

  • @TheGuyNamedYaidir OMG PHAIL...do you even know what sterotype means? LMAO

  • @Zer0Zero yeah i never really liked shonen anime because of this..

  • is it me or does the five leaves supposed to mean weed o.O

  • Funimation, I think it's really great that you guys are licensing these more artistic anime shows. I have been promoting them and watching them right here on YouTube and I hope they are a success for you. I just have a few comments:

    * I really don't like the "You should be watching" tagline, or at least the kind of creepy voice it's spoken in.

    * Could you please remove the watermark? It diminishes from the mood.

    Thanks

  • I think why the reasons why the characters are 'ugly' is because the art style is kind of like that of an animated ukiyo-e painting.

  • Hey, does anyone know where I can find more episodes of House of Five Leaves? I just love this show, and I've only seen just the two episodes.

  • @CubbyPaw

The episodes come out an hour after the original air in japan on funimations channel.

So funimation is releasing these pretty much as soon they come out in japan.

The episodes that are on funimations site are the only ones out now.Even in Japan.

  • @BlackLagoonFreak Thanks a lot for the info dude. You have been a great help :)

  • i hope the fight scenes get better.... but i like it

  • when's the next ep coming out??

  • Uhm, I love this. I can smell a wonderful bromance coming on. PLEASE continue to sub this. I love it. 5 stars!

  • Bravo, this was an amazing show.

  • yaichi totally reminds me of Gin from Bleach.

  • Good story and animation, it grabs your attention just by watching the first episodes. Hope to see more in the future

  • It sucks that they disabled embedding. Why don't companies understand that they benefit from people spreading their content around? It's like free advertising.

  • yaichi is interesting, look like it's going to be good.

  • Pinky ftw.

  • Wow! I loved that <3 I can't wait for the next episode! The art's so pretty to, I really like the eyes. Hmm, though I wonder what;s up with the kid at the beginning... Is it the MC guy years later? Or maybe he's someone else?

  • wait a second... ooo the first part is animation backwards hmmm

  • oooo, this was amazing! X) love the drawing style and the music was epic, gah! when will there be another episode?!

  • well this looks like it's gonna be good :D haha i knew it would turn out that he was actually strong ! the only criticism that i have to say was the animation when he "fought" those two guys what the heck it looked weird and in slow-mo

  • Why does everything look beautiful except the characters? :/ Kind of depressing.

  • @FMPuppet i like that this anime depicts how not everyone is a bishie in japan. a lot of people are drawn to beautiful anime characters like I am, but this is a nice change of pace.

  • I'm not a big fan of the frog-like faces (seriously, that woman was supposed to be beautiful?), but other than that, this is some masterful work. I'm looking forward to see how it develops.

  • @Azureman012 I said the same thing when he said the woman was beautiful. but overall, this looks like a good anime

  • This looks VERY promising. They could take this in a lot of directions. And I LOVE the art!!!!!!:)

  • the style, the music, the story everything is perfect in this anime

  • ffffff episode 2 where are you D:

  • @FelidaeFur

Episode 1 just aired in Japan 1 hour before FUNimation's streaming release (@12:30CT, Thursday) in North America, which means, episode 2 will air next week in Japan. So you'll have to wait till next week to see it.

  • the style reminds me of old animated movies from the 60's-80's time. Like "The Hobit" and "The Last Unicorn" but just updated with Japanese skill. The art has a lot of personality, and the nutritive moves at a nice pace. It's like a calm anime for more mature anime fans... I think I'm starting to feel old...

  • Love the animation and characters! Can't wait to see where this is going!

  • Is this yaoi?

    8D

  • @lavenderblossom dunno, but the implications r there! 'i like you' and in the manga he even goes '..we'd better stick together for a long time.'

  • @IImrdiamondII

Awesome haha...Implications are the best, and allow the mind to..Fantasize even more! Haha...Thanks :]

  • @lavenderblossom lmao that would be so funny if it did turn out like that

  • @piffyxP

    Lol I agree XD

  • It looks promising...

  • So nice to see Natsume Ono's stuff get animated! Looks to be a great series. Thanks for the near-simulcast! :D You guys rock

  • didnt really like the animation and the main character's whole mopey samurai routine got kind of irritating.

nice art style though. It seems pretty well done but not in my tastes at all.

  • This looks really cool. I've never had a new style grow on me faster. :)

  • this is awesome!!!!

  • the art and theme, reminds me a LITTLE of samurai champloo, so far this anime looks like its going to be a good one.

  • @77777computerperson it is the same animation studio afterall.

  • @joystick1101 true

  • Kitteh :3

  • Excellent first episode! Looking forward to see the interaction between the two main characters and the secrets that both hold, especially, Yaichi-dono. A yummy rouge indeed.

  • I really like this show. This is awesome! I hope ya'll upload more!

  • Wow! This was such a great beginning to a series. Love the main character already, and the art is pretty different looking too, but it fits well.. :)) not to mention the opening song is great! Yaichi is going to be an interesting character, looks like there's more to him than just that smile..so I'm looking forward to it! Hope the next episode is as great as this one!

  • If my theory that the depth of storyline is inversely proportional to the attractiveness of the characters is correct, then I think we've just found the Mariana Trench in this one.

  • @ghjjfsbf I agree, i think the characters are ugly, also youve got a very good analogy, comparing of the depth of the mariana trench ( which for those that dont know its the deepest trench in the world) to the soon to be great depth of another great anime.

  • Gimme this song

  • yay!
