Crusade...star trek....bablon 5 ....all different arrival times... Thank you... the ancient writings and maps survived this too. Before them build a planet ...when pride had meaning.
I liked Star Trek too, but this, i feel, went beyond the Trek. If you missed an episode or two of this, things didn't make sense for a while afterwards, plus things that happened way back suddenly made sense. Cleverly writen and never seeming long enough, the time just vanished into mere minutes when on tv, nobody in our family spoke while it was on an going to the loo wasn't an option until the adverts came on.
I'm a very, VERY passionate and loyal trekkie; Just ask my friends who can't stand my bad klingon accent! But I can still say with good conscience that Babylon 5 is in some ways superior to Star Trek. Not to say that Star Trek beats B5 in some areas as well. For me Babylon 5 is a TV-Show and Star Trek is Star Trek.
@PaulusAlone A series of CSI:ISS (International Space Station) would thankfully be a very short lived series, owing to the short supply of potential victims and new murderers each week...
@Svinue But at the end of Season 4 did not the last epiesoad say that humanity after evolving past a certain mark went to the Vorlon homeworld and claimed it as our Nova Terra after the sun exploded?
The simple matter is this show was not written on the fly. The creator wrote out the entire story from start to finish before it ever went into production. Unfortunately that was also a negative as it meant the show was set to only go so far. I think it was only slated for 5 seasons but was extended to six due to overwhelming popularity. There was a spin off but it never took off, just wasn't the same.
@XJadynX It was even worse. It was written for five seasons. Then the execs decided to cancel it after the fourth season, so the five-season story had to be wrapped up at the end of the fourth season (that's why season 4 was so intense...). Then B5 proved to be so popular that the execs backpedaled and allowed for a fifth seson, by which point they had to "make up" a new story for season five, since they had already finished the original story in season four... very messy...
It makes me happy that so many people are B5 fans, I too wish that JMS was given the budget, freedom, and whatever else he wanted/needed to continue with B5. The Technomage Trilogy, the Centauri Trilogy, Sinclair's day's on Minbar, the Psi War... there is so much that hasn't been touched on (tv-wise), and it saddens me that it probably never will be. As wonderful and successful B5 is (imho), why oh why was JMS restrained so much? I guess I'll never know...
Ahhh B5 one of the best tv shows ever created, i wish i could go back to the first time i finished the series from start to finish in a massive marathon...what an experience, re-watching is still great but pales in comparison to that first time. Shame that imo the only spinoff/movie that was any good was In the beginning...legend of the rangers was embarrassingly bad.
And i know many people who say they are put off by the first season and never go any further, if you are one then just stick with it. It only gets better and event's/scenes in S1 are pivotal for the B5 experience.
And all of the battles. It was probably the most violent season of them all with the shadow war the earth civil war with a bit of violence with the drak (is that how you spell it?)
After season 4 everything went to ruins. sheridan becomes president. Marcus dies. Ivonova leaves. Garabaldi resigns. Lennier, Londo & Gkar leave. When sinclair leaved that came to me a bit of a shock as well. Its all sad. :(
I really... REALLY loved this show. My parents showed me it at quite a young age and... daaaamn I absolutely loved it. I still get goose-bumps when I hear the soundtrack. Also I really gotta hand it to babylon 5, the story was incredibly well written. It really felt like they knew exactly where they where going with this show. There were no half-assed written plots and it didnt feel like they were coming up with the story while shooting.
Epic sci-fi at highest levels. The crew did everything right. The story, the subplots, the characters, the music. Bought the mosterbox yesterday. A complete collection of all seasons, and all movies. If you ask me, it was worth the cash :)
@Pfandfleisch Not only the cash... It worth even the soul... Christopher Franke, JMS... They made not the show. They made an ideology. Not for the fans... For the humankind entirely. Listen to the music, not the song.
Season 4 is my favorite of all the seasons, mainly because every single person who worked on the show that year put in twice the love and attention of any of the seasons. It was brilliant television, captured wonderfully by your stunning review of S4. Amazing job guys, simply amazing.
Just bought B5-series DVDs for 75€: 42 DVD of this stuff. Including all B5 episodes, TV-movies, Crusade and Lost Tales. Easily my best DVD/Bluray-purchase ever
Here's what actually happened (discovered by JMS a few years later)
.
TNT found their audience preferred simple 1-episode stories, and wanted to buy Law&Order episodes to fit that audience, but they were stuck with the B5 Crusade contract. So they sabotaged the show by demanding things they KNEW J.Michael Straczynski would never agree to do
.
And it worked - he got frustrated and walked from TNT's demands that Captain Gideon order his female crew to be raped by aliens, or to include wrestling
@inside98 According to JMS he didn't change the story that much. He moved the Season 4 cliffhanger (where Sheridan is captured) back 4 episodes, and then he moved season 5's resolution of that cliffhanger to the end of season 4
.
That's it. He also insists season 5 was what it was always meant to be - about the Telepaths and about Londo's final fall to being a Drakh puppet. That was his plan all along
@Danny77uk So much happened in Season 4- but it wouldn't have mattered without the rest of the story leading up to it. If it had just been Season 4, it wouldn't have meant anything. That's what Trek is missing- Babylon 5 was a five chapter book- while Star Trek is just a compilation of shootouts.
That's because this show had an incredibly fast pace, if you missed one Episode, four major races went extinct, twenty stars collapsed, and five-hundred wars started.
Watched this show religiously ( and I was a Trekkie) Because it was something special ~ simple as that! If Only they had given J.M. Straczynski a Star Trek budget ~who Knows?
@lokoxxxxx Hell yeah, totally agree, I gave up on Star Trek after watching Scott Bakula's "Enterprise" (good actor-bad stories). Brannon&Braga killed Trek for me-though the recent JJ Abrams Star Trek feature film was pretty decent!
@ScreamingTc "So Say We All...!" lol...Sorry I couldn't resist it ( I've been itching to use that line for ages). Seriously though, you are bang on the money there, and it would be very hard to top! However, I just keep hoping for a revival or even a 're-imagining' of Babylon 5 or Crusade similiar to BSG. But then a man has to dream...^^
@PaulusAlone I actually think the lower budget was good, with too much $ shows tend to focus on the graphics and oo ah pretty aspect, going for mainstream audience to cover the costs like Star Trek does. Smaller budget forces people to be creative and allows them to try new stuff without so much pressure on bringing in as much to cover the budget.
ive watched it time and time again, my old man has this all on dvd and i keep borrowing them along with crusade which had promise but they killed it too early, and im a trekkie as well, it was a very well thought out show - although i feel it ended a little soon everything seems to do that these days
@TyriaelSoban Aah yes, I hear you. Especially on the subject of Crusade.
I wouldn't care, but if you look at the First season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it was a little ropey (to say the least) but it became a juggernaut...
But, that's TV executives for you - I heard that Family Guy was only brought back by massive DVD sales after it was cancelled.
Honestly, it seems the only way we will get any new sc-fi saga on TV these days, is if they decide to do a 'C.S.I. In Space' show...sob.
uber cool , Loved B% stayed up to 2am when local stations played it , then syfy got it, but was always a great show, made me think about ppl and stuff . anyhow thanks for posting this vid , was great
It is extremely unlikely. The original effects shots were lost, so they had to use the video masters to make the DVDs. Without the original effects shots, they can't remaster the effects for high def. They would have to recreate the shots (like they did for the Star Trek: The Original Series Blu-Rays). I don't think Warner Bros. has the faith in the fanbase to make it worth their while.
Why ppl compare ST with B5 is beyond me - they are both entertaining although B5 transcends the mindless watchability of ST and delivers something more for the thinking person. Lets face it - the Shadows are more fascinating than the Borg or the (yawn) Klingons........ Much more depth and continuity in B5 to say the least.
In that case I'll give you the new address for that free movie site. They have films dating back to the 1920's (I just finished watching "Metropolis") all the way up to new releases that have just opened in the theaters (the new Friday the 13th movie, etc.). watch-movies-links(.)net
Hey but i have to say that from this season 4 its beginning to be better finally. I do love it finally. But still i think they look to much like the american army(or any earh army for that matter which is odd since they would have to be more advanced at least 1000 years more). Should have been laserguns as well:(
I agre in a sense it looked more like the american military, but disagree with the energy weapons. It's because B5 didn't have such sophisticated technology (like Star Trek or Star Wars) that made it unique, believable, a timeless classic.
That is becouse B5 was writen for 4 sezons while , ST was writen from ep to ep ,and no begining and no end.I like a good story that has a begining , a midle ( big battle ) and an end , that`s why B5 and Lord Of the Rings will be the greates ever!
It was planned and outlined for 5 seasons but they thought it was going to be cut to 4 but at the last minute they got the funding for the final season. The final episode, "Sleeping in Darkness" was filmed at the end of season 4 but not shown until the end of the fifth.
Music is from Christoper Franke and is as good as star wars.
But hey i do like trek too but this is wayyyy better story. Trek is like big mac haha and B5 is like a 5 star restaurant. Y never know what you get but its gooooood:p
Especially ST Next Gen seems like some kind of space soap opera. They live from ep to ep without evolving. A lot of filler episodes. :( Don't get me wrong, I like ST. It has some really good eps, too. (I like all Q-Eps ;-) )
But in the end, you said it. B5 has the wayyyyy better story.
This was the best best Sci-Fi Space Series. It had real issues, real technologies [no transporters/shields/warp drive/Force] The most farfetched thing on there was the Day of the Dead. Characters suffered real losses.
dude, I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuge B5 fan, but come-on, the dialogue is pretty unbelievably naff from time to time! Granted though, B5 & BSG (re-make) are the best things that have ever been on TV

The new BSG is a catastrophic joke that takes the spirit of the original which was great, and twists it into a gnarled mutant shadow of its former self.
I just wish that when a writer got the urge to act creative, he had the balls to do so on his own rather than butchering a perfectly good IP like BSG USED to be.
I knew it was shit when to be "edgy" Starbuck lost his balls.

Wooah! Broyles-are you totally insane? Or just 15 years old? I enjoyed the original BSG as a kid, but come-on, it's a comic book! No depth, no characterisation, cheesy dialouge and naff plot-lines! The new BSG is a heavily allegorical, socio-polital drama about the modern world we live in whether you see it not! It's a million times more interesting and impressive. Butchered! The original is just lucky that this show is of the same name, otherwise, trust me, it would be forgotten forever. peace
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My friend, the new BSG is about as allegorical as Spongebob Squarepants, the original will remain a classic for decades to come while this pretender which people try to delude themselves into liking, that is so presumptuous of itself will fade into oblivion.
In regards to being 15, don't try to make some trite argument because I hurt your feelings regarding that ball of cheese series you like.. you probably like Heroes or Lost don't you?
and then she comes back from the dead?:( i hoped we saw the last of here but nooooo...they had to kill Cain and the pegasus wich made the story far more intresting.
Still, I'd like to see a good sci-fi adventure show, like B5, but with more creative aliens and more variations in technology levels, ship designs, and weapons. Wouldn't it be cool to see REAL alien invaders? four-footed aliens, aliens with multiple eyes, and all sizes of aliens, most of all. Get away from the six-foot-standard. In short, aliens that are beleivable, with beleivable technologies, and beleivable backgrounds. Be creative, but not absurd. Get my point?
What I hate about there shows are the stereotypicity of them. Often times the ships are poorly detailed digitally, the planetside or shipside fights sport poor visual effects, when people get shot, they get shot in the same general areas every time, and all the aliens are humanoid. I hate that about these shows.
You have to keep in mind, that this show started in 1993. B5 was a pioneer in using completly digital CGI while Star Trek was still working with models and digital editing afterwards.
About humanoids you are partly right but several alien races were not humanoid: The Vorlons, the Shadows, Lorien, the Aliens from Thirdspace just to mention the ones I can come up with now ... and the series creator JMS noted several times that some alien races were planed more alien but the technology just wasn't available at this time.
Possibly the best promo for the best Sci-Fi season around. Also yeah, music is by Christopher Franke, he's a fantastic musician, got a really broad range of musical skills.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i dont like Minbare, Vorlons and Shadows...their ships and technology looks so "futuristic"...sure...i rather like the other races, their ships, weapons etc. look like real machinery...Minabarys are gay also !
Quote: "Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future and it changed us." I can't put it better than that!
well i dont know if any of you all noticed this but B5 acctually uses the forces of physics unlike starwars or some of the other series. when a starfury turns it acctually keeps flying in the same direction untill it uses its thrusters to counter the force. the attention to real space details is one of the things that made this series great!
I think B5 was a more realistic take on our future unlike Star Trek. B5 was darker and more in tune with the paranoia and intrigue of a Earth inspired human government. I luv BSG for other reasons. I think B5 and BSG both have great acting. BSG's stories have suffered but I will remain loyal. And I will remain loyal to B5. The journey that B5 took us on is to never be forgotten. RIP, Andreas Katsula and Richard Biggs.
BSG lacks the mythic quality, acting, music, lofty messages, and sheer action and entertainment of B5. there are many episodes on bsg that just Drags with a capital D.
I think BSG and B5 are equally good. You can't say that EJO can't act. He and McConnell are superb, award winning actors and they are no slouches on BSG.
The acting is good, yes, better than some in B5. I just thought it drags on many episodes. B5 dragged on S1 and S5 but it just seemed like a lot more was going on and more.....colorful. And B5 has a more humanistic tone (not bubbly like ST but not down right nihilist, not saying BSG is but....in relativity). I dunno, some things in B5 were so good they were soul-stirring, BSG has yet to impact me that way.
I shuddered watching this and remembering this season and this show.

Pay for it. Support more Babylon 5! JMS can't make more B5 without people paying for the DVDs!

You mean pay Warner Bros? JMS is no longer working with them.

Star trek voyger also copied the organic ships theory of the shadows for their story of the Borg Vs species 8472.

Fuck you organic ships have been in sci-fi for ages as has the space station concept

Ya know I've always loved B5. I know people hate on it, but it was just so cool.
drifter171 3 years ago 4
such a beautiful score, and an equally beautiful show.
Lordi1408 3 years ago 7
i miss it too:p but its wouldnt be as nice as it dragged on for 10 seasons like stargate.
And i dont think in B5 they look like the american army. BSG they do. But they should have looked more alien and a little different weapons.
wolverineeeeeeeee 3 years ago 2
Hey but i have to say that from this season 4 its beginning to be better finally. I do love it finally. But still i think they look to much like the american army(or any earh army for that matter which is odd since they would have to be more advanced at least 1000 years more). Should have been laserguns as well:(
wolverineeeeeeeee 3 years ago
I agre in a sense it looked more like the american military, but disagree with the energy weapons. It's because B5 didn't have such sophisticated technology (like Star Trek or Star Wars) that made it unique, believable, a timeless classic.
gribae 3 years ago
I solely agree with everyone, and to make things worse, star trek Deep Space Nine was a total rip from B5. In other words they copied

and bullshit 5 ripped it from somewhere else the point being these concepts have been around since sci-fi started fucktard
Rajalord27 3 years ago
That is becouse B5 was writen for 4 sezons while , ST was writen from ep to ep ,and no begining and no end.I like a good story that has a begining , a midle ( big battle ) and an end , that`s why B5 and Lord Of the Rings will be the greates ever!
executor31 3 years ago 4
yep And now from season 4 Battlestar finally gets the story in the right direction:)
wolverineeeeeeeee 3 years ago
It was planned and outlined for 5 seasons but they thought it was going to be cut to 4 but at the last minute they got the funding for the final season. The final episode, "Sleeping in Darkness" was filmed at the end of season 4 but not shown until the end of the fifth.

Music is from Christoper Franke and is as good as star wars.
But hey i do like trek too but this is wayyyy better story. Trek is like big mac haha and B5 is like a 5 star restaurant. Y never know what you get but its gooooood:p
wolverineeeeeeeee 3 years ago
Especially ST Next Gen seems like some kind of space soap opera. They live from ep to ep without evolving. A lot of filler episodes. :( Don't get me wrong, I like ST. It has some really good eps, too. (I like all Q-Eps ;-) )
But in the end, you said it. B5 has the wayyyyy better story.
thedragon133 3 years ago
the best thing about Babylon 5? No charcters like ensign crusher as well as consistently better epic story lines.

This was the best best Sci-Fi Space Series. It had real issues, real technologies [no transporters/shields/warp drive/Force] The most farfetched thing on there was the Day of the Dead. Characters suffered real losses.
It was the Best Sci-Fi Space Show ever.

hajime2k 4 years ago 5
dude, I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuge B5 fan, but come-on, the dialogue is pretty unbelievably naff from time to time!

Butchered! The original is just lucky that this show is of the same name, otherwise, trust me, it would be forgotten forever. peace

Anything thats popular at the moment.. I suppose.

BSG looks way too much like the american army and Starbuck is man!! not a stupid woman. At least they could have called her another name!
Not much egyptian style in the series and thats what i liked in the original one.

AlabamaSoldier 4 years ago
Yes
eugenefetherman 4 years ago
I thought the Vorlons and Shadows and the other First Ones were very creative aliens.
F0reseer 4 years ago
What I hate about there shows are the stereotypicity of them. Often times the ships are poorly detailed digitally, the planetside or shipside fights sport poor visual effects, when people get shot, they get shot in the same general areas every time, and all the aliens are humanoid. I hate that about these shows.
AlabamaSoldier 4 years ago
You have to keep in mind, that this show started in 1993. B5 was a pioneer in using completly digital CGI while Star Trek was still working with models and digital editing afterwards.
Analayanar 4 years ago 3
About humanoids you are partly right but several alien races were not humanoid: The Vorlons, the Shadows, Lorien, the Aliens from Thirdspace just to mention the ones I can come up with now ... and the series creator JMS noted several times that some alien races were planed more alien but the technology just wasn't available at this time.
Analayanar 4 years ago
Thank you-beautiful-reminds me again why I so enjoyed this series! =)

i dont like Minbare, Vorlons and Shadows...their ships and technology looks so "futuristic"...sure...i rather like the other races, their ships, weapons etc. look like real machinery...Minabarys are gay also !
lafayette0815 4 years ago
lol, this IS sci-fi, you know?...
it is the point that they have technology what looks "futuristic" like you say...
vorlons and shadows have bio-ships, so no wonder that they arent machinery...
and minbari, classic alien race for sci-fi, dont understand you why you say that, its sci-fi. sci-fi is mostly about future, space and stuff... lol

Along with BSG and DS9, B5 was some of the greatest sci-fi ever made.
Does anyone know what the name of the music used in this video is? I know it's from B5, but from where?

The music is by Christopher Franke and I think is was especially written for the DVD boxed set.

What makes this one of the greatest sci-fi epics ever is the entire 5 season show's plot was written before they ever started shooting.
Truly a pioneer across all genres that shows today like LOST try to emulate.
JoinedJustToSayThis 4 years ago 3
well i dont know if any of you all noticed this but B5 acctually uses the forces of physics unlike starwars or some of the other series. when a starfury turns it acctually keeps flying in the same direction untill it uses its thrusters to counter the force. the attention to real space details is one of the things that made this series great!
Maverick4230 4 years ago 3
indeed
and the weapons, the ships (at least earth ships) looked like real machinery....
the other thing i loved about this series where the centauri plots...and the music...damn i miss this show :(
i dont think there will be another sequel after the crusader failure :'(
MISANTHROPE00 4 years ago 3
I think B5 was a more realistic take on our future unlike Star Trek. B5 was darker and more in tune with the paranoia and intrigue of a Earth inspired human government. I luv BSG for other reasons. I think B5 and BSG both have great acting. BSG's stories have suffered but I will remain loyal. And I will remain loyal to B5. The journey that B5 took us on is to never be forgotten. RIP, Andreas Katsula and Richard Biggs.
satxboi30 4 years ago 7
BSG lacks the mythic quality, acting, music, lofty messages, and sheer action and entertainment of B5. there are many episodes on bsg that just Drags with a capital D.
Notcoldsoup 4 years ago
I think BSG and B5 are equally good. You can't say that EJO can't act. He and McConnell are superb, award winning actors and they are no slouches on BSG.
satxboi30 4 years ago 2
The acting is good, yes, better than some in B5. I just thought it drags on many episodes. B5 dragged on S1 and S5 but it just seemed like a lot more was going on and more.....colorful. And B5 has a more humanistic tone (not bubbly like ST but not down right nihilist, not saying BSG is but....in relativity). I dunno, some things in B5 were so good they were soul-stirring, BSG has yet to impact me that way.
Notcoldsoup 4 years ago 2
BSG can never expect to be as good as this series it just rocks!
