jim was her husband but his soul went into anothher mans body names Sam Lucas, and when his spirit goes into the body he forgets that he is jim and it takes a while for him to rememeber who he is. so melinda who saw jim go into sams body is the only person that sees him as jim everyone else thinks he is sam
