  • Another tip wrong type of shoes( flat sole shoes) to be doing squats, too much cushion in heels, so when your beginning to do deep squats especially with those types of shoes your knees go past your toes and you start to come up on your toes on the upward phase of the movement.

  • why would you keep your head down? when you look up it helps keep the lower back from rounding

  • It also helps to point your feet outwards slightly to help stabilize your knees

  • take those shoes off.. you need a flat surface

  • head DOWN not up.

  • Hey Scott

I just wanted to ask something about this, how should my feets be, point forward or to the sides and how far forward can my knees get?..

    and nice vids you got!

  • Comment removed

  • Without actually listening to what you have to say, I would have to say you're wrong just based on watching the video on mute.

  • I try to watch my knees going past my toes but if I do that I have to sit out more with my hips. I'm having a hard time supporting myself after a work out because me back feels so weak. It looks like I'm keeping in straight during the exercise but I don't understand why I feel like this then.

  • thanks for the no nonsense clear explaination/demonstration. today is squat day.

  • i cant find a good spot to place the bar on my shoulders any tips?!?

  • squatting CORRECTLY is great for building knee strength.olympic squats-5x5.olympic front squats-5x3.i know this sounds overly simple but-it works.ive been doing them for over 27 years.my faher for over 50 years.no knee or joint problems.he also runs twice weekly.

  • your arms are bigger than your legs

  • great, but the way he has his wrist bent specially when he is going down,, is not good with heavier weights.

  • IS SQUATTING GOOD FOR YOUR KNEES!?!?!

  • great form scott!

  • enjoy your wrecked ellbows, brah

  • is there anything wrong with me as ,ı do squat that I get back pain , is back involved this excercise? thanks

  • Hey Scott, how much do you squat? I'd like to know how much a person who works out a lot can squat (who is also not a steroid abusing freak).

  • u suck at squats

  • Stop moaning just "SQUAT" exactly like taking a dump in the wild (best advice ever) i assure you will be fine!!!

  • hey scott :P ...how do you put the bar on your shoulders the right way ?

  • @satinderjit4 it doesn't sit on your shoulders, flex your traps and let the bar sit on there

  • @satinderjit4 start with it on a stand

  • I know this might be a "blond" question to ask for a beginner, but: did you have any balance issues at your very first squats, Scott? Like loosing balance and going backwards? If you did, what did you do to counter it?

  • scott. you suck at lifting.

  • hyperflexion on neck... not good scott

  • At least your form is slightly better in this one...

  • and yes scott has horrible form.

  • Oh man i really hope ppl dont take advice from this wanabe bodybuilding idiot.

  • If you are eager to be posting videos learning people how to do this. Atleast do it properly and explain more, you're just doing the movement and frankly breatinhg in on the way up ? Are you stupid ?., you can pass out! Thumb down!

  • you can not teach the squat in a minute 35 seconds. Go into any REAL squatter or weight lifter video like Matt Wenning's "so you think you can squat" or even Mark Rippetoe's INTRO is about 4. When you rush through the video like this you miss alot of key tips.

  • Your hip falls back at the bottom of your movement, making you loose your form (which means your lower back still appear to be straight, but it isnt). Knees buckle in at the bottom of the movement. Also if you raise your chest from the low position you loose the tension in your hamstrings.

  • I used to be able to squat, but then i took an arrow in the knee

  • @EagleWing15 I used to think fitness trainers on YouTube knew what they were talking about, but then I saw a Scott Herman video.

  • @PalerLaze You obviously don't know about the internet meme/lingo about "Took an arrow in the knee". Newfag.

  • @Shadowfury I actually do know about the meme, it's from Skyrim "I used to be an adventurer, then I took an arrow in the knee."

  • @Shadowfury You're calling someone a newfag, for trying to break the norm on the shittiest, most overused meme on YOUTUBE? Wow, haha. How much do you even bench/squat/deadlift? I bet it's like 90 pounds LOL

  • @Chrisman50 Yes. And it's not the most overused meme on youtube for calling someone a newfag. The meme did not start from youtube, retard. Go do some research before you learn how to lift weights properly. As far as I'm concerned, I'm pretty sure I bench press, squat, deadlift, and do more curls, pull-ups, and dips more than you could. LOLOLOL. GTFO NOW BEFORE I YELL AT YOU WITH MY TEXT.

  • @Shadowfury The first sentence made no sense, so I won't reply to that unless you rephrase lol. I never said it started on YouTube, but it still is overused on Youtube. I doubt you can squat more than me. I bet you're benching like 135 and deadlifting 175 thinking you're hot shit, hahaha!

  • @Chrisman50 What first sentence made no sense, 'cause I said yes? Is English your first language, or are you being a fucking retarded faggot? ROFL. I replied yes to your first sentence for using the "most overused meme on YOUTUBE". Dumbass. Hahahaha, you think you're tough shit. Get the fuck out, I'd like to see you do that... fucking amateur. You certainly are tough, fucking faggot who can't benchpress or deadlift shit. Please... no. LOL. No 14 year old kid like you won't do shit.

  • @Shadowfury hahaha. Come on, what are your 3 big lift numbers?

  • @EagleWing15

thumbed down your ass. That shit's getting annoying.

  • @THuGZZTA thumbed down your ass cause that shits hilarious! always will be!

  • @TheRawpowerlifter

How is it funny when you see it on every single video every other page. It's fucking unoriginal now and annoying.

  • @THuGZZTA its funny because i have a sense of humour lol dang learn to laugh a little

  • @TheRawpowerlifter

I do have a sense of humor. that reference from skyrim was funny the first few times I saw it. Just a mild chuckle at that. Seeing it on every single video takes that away and makes it seem like your trying too hard. And before you come at me saying I'm raging I really don't give a rats ass this is the internet I'm 6'2 240lbs 5% bodyfat just like everyone else on the internet.

  • @EagleWing15 No you just cant squat because your a pussy who doesnt train legs

  • hey scott wanted to know mate does this exercise actually help build your upper body mass bcos i really am not too fussed about getting leg muscles!

  • is it ok if the legs are positioned wider then shoulder?

  • Next time mention abdominal pressure, the Valsalva Maneuver, knees staying in track with your toes, and going ATG, not just "slightly past 90 degrees." Much better than your other squat video, but still bad.

  • do you ever train legs ?

  • 1.33 = The Shirt I Never Wear. Look how clean it is! Great video!

  • hey scott, i have a perplexing question

why do you squat like this in this video, and squat differently in the video,

"Calling all RW/RR Challengers- Scott Herman squats 225 more times than you can." ????

  • Once again, another shitty video with bad advice. People do yourself a favor and do a search for Mark Rippetoe, Louis Simmons, Dave Tate, or Jim Wendler for real instruction on the dead lift, squat, and bench press. You should do the same Scott, cause you don't know what your talking about... and put a fucking shirt on...!

  • Elbows should be back. Performed in the manner demonstrated here, the arms carry some of the weight which is transmitted to the elbows. That can quickly lead to golfer's elbow/tendonitis. Also, squats should be done to just past the point where the femur hits parallel with the knee, otherwise there is very little posterior chain recruitment, so the knees carry the burden of moving the weight back up.

  • wow I thought my form was off but I don't like watching people in the gym, this is a great help.

  • Shitty quad-dominant squat sure to tear your knees up.

  • theres really nothing wrong with his form, so everyone shut the fuck up

  • This bloke still can't squat for toffee.

  • @ScottHermanFitness Thanks for taking the high road on all this criticism. I am subscribed to your channel, so I tend to see all of the childish comments left. Keep up the good work, and thanks for the videos.

  • Whats going on scott?

great vids, nice tecnique, thanks man.

  • do you have a video on a power clean? where you are thrusting the barbell over your head like how MMA fighters train?

  • Bad form Scott.

1: Your wrists are badly bent

2: Too much anterior pelvic tilt

    3: Horrible shoes for squatting

I'm not an expert by any means, but these things are obvious.

  • you cant squat for shit scott

  • haha OMG! people who have hissy fit in squat videos need to STFU. A lot of people do it the same but with miniscule differences anyway. Scott's vid on squat looks fine. (posture while going down, controlled movement etc) thx for the vid !

  • Scott what's your opinion on so-called 'high bar' and 'low bar' squats? Where do you keep your bar? :)

  • hey scott how did you actually get the bar up their ... ?

  • HEY SCOTT!

    thx 4 all the advise!

    I learn everything from you.

Keep on going the good work!

  • What am I doing wrong if I bend too far forward? Thanks Scott!

  • hey Scott, I perform my squats pretty damn close to this but I can't quite get to 90 degree's due to my knee's being not the best, what muscle will this take away from and what exercise will make up for it?

  • @jakegiles2 depends on how far down you go and if all the weight is on your heals. try making your feet a bit farther apart an see if that helps you go lower :)

  • @ScottHermanFitness Why would you suggest a wider stance for going lower, especially for a guy with knee problems? If anything should explode someone's knees, it's going too deep on wide stance squats.

  • @jakegiles2 how your knees can be the best if you dont full squat ??????? retarded excuses like "i have a BAD BACK , i have BAD knees" not only sounds extremely retarded " a bad back " but you ever question youself why is it "bad" ??? its not bad its just WEAK , cuz no training , the main reason peoples back hurt is because weakness and its not spinal pain but more of soreness and muscle aching due to weakness , please use your fucking brain man

  • @sdfefde stfu you little bitch, i asked a reasonable and fair question and you throw this bull shit at me, i have osgoodshlatters in both my fucken knee's, i said nothing about my back being bad, i gurantee i would still fuck your ass up in life so what excuse would you throw out for that? I can't throw a punch and im a little bitch? that's what I thought pussy go troll some more

  • @jakegiles2 Don't feed the trolls.

  • terrible advice. everyone do yourselves a favor and search "mark rippetoe squat" for the real way to squat properly.

  • @canitasteyou321 Dude... seriously.. get a life.. everyone is a critic when it comes to "The Perfect Squat" there is nothing wrong with the form in this video

  • @ScottHermanFitness

get a life? i already have a great life that consists of proper strength training. and from a point of view concerning squat mechanics, almost everything is wrong with the form in the video.

  • @canitasteyou321 Put up a squat video so I can laugh when you can't do 135.

  • @drblake

how about you first? maybe you like dweling about other people's videos you creep

  • @canitasteyou321 I already have video's up if you want my facebook let me know phaggot.

  • @drblake

    wanna phuck sometime?

  • @ScottHermanFitness the form you're displaying in this video is actually fucking horrendous.

your first mistake is wearing running shoes to squat.

there is no need to sit back in a high-bar squat.

your feet are pointed straight forward. this is incorrect for most people (including yourself, your knees are coming in) since they can't produce the external rotation necessary during a squat.

  • @ScottHermanFitness also, the "don't let your knees go past your toes" thing is bullshit. tell someone with long femurs to try and keep their knees behind their toes and I guarantee they will almost always fall backwards. as long as the weight is over the mid-foot, knees going past toes is FINE.

breathing on the way up is also a great way to get injured due to a lack of intra abdominal pressure. breath should be held until you pass your sticking point.

  • @Gigantophis Whilst I do agree with the breathing point, I must disagree with the knees going past the toes. This is usually a beginners problem which will fade as you build stronger quadriceps which will ultimately allow you to perform proper squats. Your knees shouldn't go past your toes because for beginners this usually leads to misdistribution of mass through your feet which could lead to injuries.

  • @Gigantophis Your knees should never go past your toes. Even Brian Shaw, 6'8" 400+lbs can squat with his knees behind his toes. This is literally the dumbest comment I have ever seen and the fact that so many people gave it a thumbs up is astonishing.

  • @Gigantophis YOU FRENCH FRY WHEN YOU PIZZA, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A BAD TIME!

  • @Gigantophis somebody actually read starting strength by Mark Ripptoe I guess? ;)

Anyways even if you didn't you are right

  • @be9easy3 I read the book cover to cover like a million times, haha.

  • @Gigantophis shut the fuck up

  • @Gigantophis Just to add to your comment: Never squat, deadlift or lunge with running shoes.

  • @ScottHermanFitness The technique in the video is good in the short-term but over the long haul you will be limited in how much weight you can add before hurting yourself. Squat technique is very important at the higher poundages where biomechanical leverage becomes even more important for injury prevention.

There are lots of videos showing good squat technique that takes the movement through its full range of motion. Look up Olympic Squat or Rippetoe's Back Squat.

  • @ScottHermanFitness I' d normally agree with you expect that this time, most oly lifters and powerlifters ( and serious bodybuilders that go deep) do have much stronger and more defined legs than planetfitness uper body warriors

  • @ScottHermanFitness Are you serious? That form is terrible and you know it. You have great vids and advice for beginners and so on, but you have to be able to acknowledge when you're doing it wrong.

  • @ScottHermanFitness

loolll. So if you can't make the last rep then just bent over and die. Good job bro. XD

  • @ScottHermanFitness I agree there is absolutely nothing wrong here.

  • @ScottHermanFitness Hey scott, can you please tell me some home workouts for the core? Im starting bootcamp for football offseason in 2 weeks and i wanna get a head start and keep training during thanksgiving break and i wont have access to a gym.

  • @ScottHermanFitness Nothing wrong, no. But you really can't compare yourself with Mark Rippetoe, he's the best.

  • @ScottHermanFitness Bullshit. You are supposed to squat all the way down.

  • @canitasteyou321

he's definitely doing SOMETHING right considering the size/definition of his quads lol

  • @itsJonnyJyo

any dingus can grow a fair amount of quad muscle by doing leg extensions. proper squats should develop the posterior chain more than the quads(except front and high bar squats)

  • @canitasteyou321

Mark Rippetoe is a wayyy out-dated

  • @incisive92

Proper strength knowledge doesn't have an expiry date. Compare serious trainers who squat over 200 kg using tried and tested regimes and health spa managers such as this guy who can't even budge two plates.

  • @incisive92 yea, but better than this queef

  • It take like 1 hour to load The video on my stupid att connection

  • I heard something interesting the other day, women should squat with their knees slightly bent outwards, but men do not need to do this because their knees are naturally hinged this way. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

  • @mmagirl756 I really do not know the whole story about this but when I had knee problems a couple of month ago, I went to a doctor and physiotherapist. The problem was that my knees turned inward just a little bit while jumping and working out. It was not much at all. I had to bend them a little more outwards than I was used to do it, to keep everything totally straight. That solved the problem. I guess the key really is to have your legs in a straight line from hip to foot. I'm male btw ;)

  • @mmagirl756 no truth to that, however you can squat with your knees bent outward or forward, whatever is more comfortable, HONESTLY

  • not so easy with 400 lbs on the bar tho! lol

  • amigo deverias Utilizar Subtitulos en español en tus videos ya que son muy buenos ;)

  • Can I ask what you max squat is? (1 max rep)

  • looks hard but good tips.

  • Is it bad if i use a smith machine for squats and deadlifts ?

  • @DailyGrower Yes. It doesn't allow proper natural movement. Do them with a barbell.

  • Awesome! Thanks Scott!

  • Hey Scott...quick question for ya. I've been doing squats with the Smith machine for a while, since I transitioned to an actual gym a couple months ago, and I want to start using barbells. But when ever I do a squat, I sometimes have a pinch or a spasm usually near my shoulder blades. Any possible advice?

  • ha ha ha, every time i come on youtube there are people having an argue lol...no matter what video i watch xD

  • a deadlifting vid would be nice im allway woried i have poor form

  • That has got to be the best form I've seen. This is the exact form that is discussed in the National Academy of Sports Medicine's curriculum. You're really good about keeping your knees in line with your 2nd and 3rd toes, keeping your shoulders back, chest up, aligning the weight with your center of gravity, all while dropping your hips and not overarching your lower back.

I do have a question, though: is it possibly harmful to go past 90°?

  • @syrinj

It is not harmful to go past 90 as it is an entirely natural movement for the joint. If anything it is better to go past 90 and try to push up with lighter weight. You will engage more of your glutes and hamstrings, these are also called supersquats and the only best way to add overall muscle mass to the body. All the great bodybuilders understand the important of supersquats and deadlifts. Two of the biggest mass building exercises out there. Stop before 90 to wreck ur knees though.

  • great work Scott, for once there's someone who actually puts constructive material (that works) on the net

  • i'll just include that for people that lack the hip/leg flexibility to get parallel with your feet shoulder with apart, it's okay to go a little wider and SLIGHTLY turn the toes outward. and i'd say this is a good video, but the only thing is that when you were finishing your lift you can see your knees go in a little bit. i used to have the same problem because i had a muscular imbalance with the quad muscles the left and to the right of my knee.

  • feet should be slightly pointed outward! nothing major and you can go lower than that it doesnt hurt

  • if anyone wants to learn how to squat properly, watch "SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SQUAT" from efts. it's a 4 part series with everything you need to know how to properly squat. No offence Herms.

  • I've tried this before and hurt my shoulder bad.. any tips on avoiding that?

  • The workout you have on you're website is it really like yours or jsut an example and do you recommend it to beginners or everyone

  • I fell last week attempting to do a squat with a pair of 45's.. Technique is legit.

  • @datpimpinboy im sorry but your wrong on everything there, 150 at your height is very skinny, cardio machines will not build muscle! who the hell told you that? if you want to gain muscle you gotta lift dem heavy weights...

  • @swaaahtome Dude, first of all I'm not skinny. Like I said, I am not skinny nor fat. My body is avergae, I have a thin layer of fat since many years ago I used to be out of shape and that prevents me from gettina "six pack". And FYI, Cardio is very important to gain muscle. If you dont burn fat, no matter how much weigh you lift, it will never show since all the fat is covering your muscle.

  • @datpimpinboy im 6 foot,210 with below 10% body fat, you want muscles you lift weights not do cardio you absolute clown. 150 is skinny as fuck cuz. The reason you cant get a 6 pack is because your skinny fat, you have no muscles to show, if you do cardio you will look like a concentration camp victim, im a personal trainer i think i know what im talking about. Eejit.

  • @swaaahtome Are u fucking retarded? Are u like mentally challenged? Apparently all those fucking muscles of yours ate out your brain, because I can tell your lack of brain cells right away. First of all, everyone on this planet is different, I am not skinny by any means, if I was skinny I wouldnt have extra "skin" or fat in my body and that's what I wanna get rid of by doing cardio. In order to get muscle you have to do BOTH weight and cardio excercises. What a shitty ass personal trainer u are

  • @datpimpinboy lulz your 150lb and your telling me how to get muscles? the human body has to store fat or you will die, the reason you think you have more fat then average is because you have no muscle! (fat at 150lbs? lolzers!). All muscle building programmes state to increase base calories by 500, and to use compound lifts, cardio is discouraged due to (1 burning extra calories (2 long distance cardio has been shown to reduce muscle mass. BOOM SUCK IT BITCH.

  • Cardio is important for heart health, the best forms interval training, ie sprints, also rowing is excellent, swimming etc. You dont know jack kid, just another arsehole with an opinion, if your so right why are you a weed? no offence to skinny brethren but this guys a wanker....

  • @swaaahtome LOL yea right "personal trainer" you sure know a lot about fitness, I mean why dont you create your own channel? name it something like "retardedassfitness" or something on that note. You know shit about fitness, it's sad that you call your self a pers. trainer and dont know something so basic that in order to be "ripped" like scott, you HAVE to do cardio along with weigh trainning. You are a fucking joke, I feel sorry for whoever follows your ridiculous advice you fucktard.

  • @datpimpinboy At the end of the day, im 210 ripped as fuck, aesthetic and overall nice guy... i tried to help you but no... If you want to gain muscle you need to do weights, they are no.1 cardio isnt necessary, i only do sprints. All this is common fact, google it! actually surprised how dumb you are! i mean your 150lbs! you weigh as much as Anne frank and your telling ME im wrong? and you can build muscle by just doing cardio? lololololol

    pls go ralph

  • @swaaahtome At the end of the day I have a brain and am not a fuckin illiterate with a 1 inch dick such as yourself. I have stated a thousand times that to get muscle you have to do BOTH (MEANING 2) not just cardio, but apparantly, given your first grade education that is way to complicated for your rat's size brain to process. I can always get ripped like anyone else with time, but your stupidity cannot be undone. You do nothing but make me laugh you pathetic dumbass :)

  • @datpimpinboy Please what have i said that is incorrect? what have you debunked that makes me an idiot? i said lifting weights build muscle, cardio does not and im an idiot? how does this work? why you talking about penises? you are a very insecure individual... you are dumb, arrogant and very cuntish. You will never be big or ripped, way too much of a cunt who doesnt listen, at the end of the day in real life you are nothing, and i would use you as dental floss you little pigeon.

  • @swaaahtome LOL okay whatever floats your boat dumbass. I wont fight with someone who is way below my intelligence level. I dont wanna downgrade myself to such thing. Have a nice day you fucktard :)

  • @datpimpinboy AHAHAHAHA but you are wrong about everything! you anorexic? forever small! actually lolling about how handicapped you are! just cover your ears and dont listen right? EVERYTHING i said is correct! cant believe people like you exist in the world, no wonder its so fucked, ignorant little prick. Just google it, thats what separates the big dudes, from little weak idiots like yourself, the ability to teach themselves. Really 150lbs lecturing me on muscle building? 150lb and still fat.

  • @swaaahtome Not only are you fat, retarded, but you cant shut up.... Jesus Christ, I feel sorry for the whore to gave birth to you. No wonder you were given to a foster home you annoying fat ass prick. Get some education, might benefit you more than lifting weights after all. :)

  • @datpimpinboy lulz i actually have a 6 pack, must suck to be you huh? Get some education? but im right? why do I need an education? you prove how dumb you are by answering back with no proof to discredit me! You are the quintessential internet warrior, small, skinny, weak, bullied in school, you get to speak out here though without getting your ass wooped like what happens in real life. Why do you even bother? you literally have nothing going for you little dude...

  • @swaaahtome Lol sure. whatever you say dumbass. steroids sure help everyone, ESPECIALLY stupid idiots like you. Too bad that comes along with getting a miniscule dick, I bet your boyfriend doesnt enjoy that very much faggot.

  • @datpimpinboy Who said anything about steroids? again why talk about penises? save that for your private life. Instead why not show why im wrong and that you are in fact correct? you got nothing, you know nothing, do you even lift?

  • @swaaahtome mhm. whatever dickhead.

  • @datpimpinboy And there ya go! absolutely nothing! thats how much you know! now do your self a favor and Google strong lifts 5x5, and try not to be such a cunt to people who know more then you in future, that way you might learn something.

  • @swaaahtome Okay thanks I appreciate your wise advice... is that what you wanted to hear? there- you have it. k bye already. get over it and stop crying.

  • @datpimpinboy god damn i would beat your ass in real life

  • @swaaahtome Lol sure, who can beat 200 pounds of fat

  • @datpimpinboy shut the fuck up skeletor you skinny little cunt, just cos somebody is heavier then you i.e not anorexic, doesnt mean they're fat. Funny how wrong you are isnt it? "cardio builds muscle" bahahahahaha absolutely clueless!

  • @swaaahtome FATASS!

  • @datpimpinboy why u mad tho? u jelly? ya u jelly

  • @swaaahtome mhm

  • @datpimpinboy actually bro cardio wont be necessary for you. if your 150 and not skinny but not fat then you have a fast metabolism. lifting heavy weights is more important than doing cardio. yeah cardio is good for your health but for your size it'll be more disastrous. i dont think you would get that much bigger cause you already burning so much calories. eating and lifting heavy is what you need to focus on more and maybe the occasional sprinting evry now and then.

  • is there any other kind of squat with a barbell?

  • @10Dante4 You can do front squats too.

  • @10Dante4 front,split,overhead,hack and Bulgarian.

  • You don't ATG Scott?

  • he's going light weights to show us that it's easy to do!! stop commenting about weights!!

  • Im 14 and i squat 280 but i could probably max at 300 and when i squat i almost touch my ankles. Is that to low or is it ok

  • Do you have any tips on how to put the bar down gently?

    Good vid

  • @RazKaz31 Don't worry. I am sure you can figure it out. But as for me.... I like the noise ;)

  • @ScottHermanFitness But I work out at home and I don't wanna ruin my floors lol

  • @ScottHermanFitness what about for those of us who work out at home and don't want to ruin our floors?

  • @ScottHermanFitness

can u plz record people in the gym who are doing funny things like putting on 800lbs and not even doin good form or ppl who are doin bad form

idk its funny cuz i saw ur video that that one dude was laughing at u when u were bicep curling and wanna see them do the incorrect

  • @RazKaz31 wow. you put it down slowly?
