Terry Whin-Yates (3rd Generation Locksmith) from Mr. Locksmith was not allowed by Weiser Lock to enter the “Professional Lock Picking Contest” on Tuesday night July 26, 2011 at the PNE Prize Home in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. Also, several other Mr. Locksmith representatives were not allowed to enter the picking contest to pick the Weiser Smart Key deadbolts. Future events to be named "Amateur only Lock Picking Contest" or if you watch this video you can't enter either.
I am a locksmith. What you seen here is true. Do not buy Smartkey locks, and yes , thieves have tools or make modified versions of these tools. You can thank videos like this one for that.
I think that deadbolt was modified. When this guy throws the bolt, he removed the key without turning it back to its home position--you can't remove the key that way!
Not modified at all.. go back and watch the video in full screen. The tool is clearly removed when it's at the 12 o'clock position, the normal position to remove a working key. I own the tool and it works as shown. Even though, you have to remember that this isn't a pin tumbler lock, so yes you can remove the key in the turned position. In fact, when you re key the lock you'll be doing just that; removing and inserting a new key at the 3 o'clock position.
@AdvancedLockService After going back to watch the video, I noticed there are two video edits (right before you insert the tool and right after you remove it).
Yeah, you're completely right. I think they could have shot that a little smoother. There's nothing worse than video edits and cut away shots to cast doubt on the credibility of a product, huh? Makes me think of a Chris Angel video, some of them are just plain hokey.
@happy543210 Actually I have seen this tool in action. This video is very real. The only thing he isn't properly demonstrating is the amount of force necessary in this operation. If you have these locks on your home or business you are a fool. And now that almost all Kwikset brand locks sold are Smart Key well....um....buy Schlage. That is all.
What I've seen done is cutting a kwikset key to 33333 and simply using vise grips to turn the blank. Although the blank does occasionally break. This seems like a good tool. I knew someone would come out with it. These locks are crap! By the way, do they make one for the Schlage version?
I own this tool and I have used it on both kwi dead bolt and knob probably a dozen times and only had to replace one lock when the customer stated lock was hard to operate, the tool is spendy but well worth it,however it will not work on the new design smart locks by Kwikset, hope they come out with another good by pass tool for it- hope this review helps!
Unfortunately, yes. Although the sale of this tool is restricted to locksmiths and law Enforcement, I've found websites offering to sell the tool to anyone who simply claims that they're a locksmith. It's also a fairly simple tool to make. One of my locksmith employees didn't want to spend $70 to purchase the tool from our supplier so he made one from some things he had laying around in his garage. It took him about 45 minutes to finish it.
@rwdemamiel A thief can do it with a filed down key blank and a screwdriver. I am a professional security consultant with a texas wide firm, and thats what we see. This is a great tool but its so expensive locksmiths and thieves alike just do it with a keyblank and a screwdriver.
