I don't know...I listen to Rachmaninoff play & it's just beyond beautiful... & I truly think that if one took 100 of the world's greatest pianist's & they all played the same piece as Rachmaninoff with the same notes, timing & piano...that he would still stand out amongst them all. There is something so spiritual & unique about this man as a composer & performer that just makes him the best ever, & my very favorite.
In 1888 - at the age of 15 - Rachmaninov is higly appreciated by Tchaikovsky at the Moscow conservatory who forecast for him a great succes as a composer and pianist. His legedary career starts in a very great artistic milieu !
Still my favourite version. He manages it to play it on the one hand so simple, almost humble and at the same time, it is so refined; his rubato is breathtaking, his touch and the creation of perspective are perfect. It is highly expressive and has the certain inwardness I adore. A heavenly vision with echoing sadness.
Thankyou Allegroconmoto, In my humble opinion this is the pinnacle of piano playing ! It reflects the mastery of a great man who was a pianist , composer and conductor and a good human being ...How often does that happen?
Painfully, bitterly sad and agonizingly beautiful performance. Thank you for sharing :-)
