This would have been a great song if they'd left it an instrumental, especially with the guitar intro they have here. Not because of Ray's singing, but because no one gave any effort to writing a melody for the vocal part. I can't think of any song from the Gabriel or Collins eras that had such a forgettable melody.
This is not Genesis as we know it... but what a great album anyway! Instead maybe they should of made it without a mellow Phil Collins soft side and went straight for the throat.
Calling All Stations was an excellent album, and as evidenced by Ray's solo work, they could have moved forward to create one hell of a follow up. Really sad that it didn't work out.
Now listen, I'm not a Genesis fan as such so I speak as someone with no vested interest in Ray Wilson, Phil C or Peter G. However this album was very underrated. Basically Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks bottled it. If they had possessed the nerve to bring out a second album with this line-up instead of listening to the pro Phil Collins fan club, I'm sure things would have improved. Things move on, Collins wasn't interested in carrying on so they should have persevered with Wilson.
My god you couldn't be wronger!! The line up of Collins, Rutherford and Banks was obviously the best! Look at other video's and you'll see the crowd's reaction when they perform on stage!! Your comment was pointless!!
Leave Ray alone. He is not PG or PC and does not desire to be. I think it's interesting hearing his interpretations of Genesis classics. He's not trying to be better than they are, he's being himself, and doing a damn good job at it I might add. The only reason they performed so much classic Genesis material in the first place, is there just wasn't enough new material. Had they stayed together, then that might have changed.
This is by far the best the band had been since Wind and Wuthering. It doesn't matter how bad this album tanked in the states because the songs were artistically sucessfull. Just lokk at Mike Rutherford in this vdeo. He had never been that animated. You can tell there was some sense of rejuvination. Wasn't Phil doing a Disney soundtrack or something?
lol who does he think he is,,laughing my bottom off here,,ok ok he can sing ,,but his high notes are crap collins come back or peter come back,,ray,,,sorry mate but it was crappppppp lollollollolololol
This song is so powerful and definetely makes calling all stations a hell of a lot better than we cant dance, dont get me wrong phil was great, but Ray feels fresh and i wish he could've done alot more with tony and mike.
The drumming is technically good, but boring. No sense of dynamics or emotion. Just plodding throughout. Would have loved to heard what either Phil or Chester might have done with this very interesting song. Ray sounds great though.
I love phil more than my own mother, but I can tell you without a doubt, this is the damndest most fantastic drum song in its own right, all by itself. I listen to it every day at least once, and my first impression seeing it on video is he is nothing I imaged, different totally but still great. My friend whos dead now was coming over the skyway on his motorcycle, tears streaming from listening to this and watching the sun set. Yah. Thanks man.
Daryl decided to follow Phil after Phil took hiatus from the band. It was obvious that Daryl would go with Phil because he was much more involved in Phil's career than Genesis, and he was closer personally to Phil than to the others. Phil was using drummer Ricky Lawson at the time; Chester didn't return to Phil's live band until 1999.
@satinsheers don't specifically know, but chances are they didn't ask him to play. Daryl has worked for Phil quite a bit more than for Genesis as whole over the years.
Ray does so much better the CAS songs than the phil stuff..too bad the album didn´t have many songs as good as this.. such a wasted opportunety for genesis
This is one I would have loved to hear on the tour Genesis did last year. Maybe not the full version but at least that first 3 minutes or so because it sounds so epic.
Great drums I think Phil would like the way Nir plays drums

Did they do any songs from CAS in their last tour?
kamwrites 1 year ago
@kamwrites No. No CAS material was played on the 2007 tour. Bloody shame!
SPeacock 1 year ago
@SPeacock I suppose it would have been pretty awkward to do. It is a shame, because two songs on this album are among my favorite Genesis songs.
kamwrites 1 year ago
@kamwrites Which are? I'm assuming The Dividing Line is one of them - is the other Congo? There Must Be Some Other Way? The title track? :)
SPeacock 1 year ago
@SPeacock The Dividing Line and Uncertain Weather are my two favorites on this album.

The beginning is kinda like the live version of Rocket by Def Leppard.

This song is amazing, especially at the beginning seeing Ray work the crowd. Too bad we'll never see that happen at Wembley or the Hollywood Bowl.

this is the best song from this album, with the best live intro. bloody magic. I saw them at the SECC in Glasgow in March 98.

@satinsheers Daryl had to play with Phil Collins
but there's also a rumour that he wanted to be a band member which the others did not accept
