You are rating a person’s intelligence on how well they spell, that’s stereo-typing. Just because someone has trouble with spelling doesn’t mean they’re dumb, which is what you are clearly saying in this video.
I am, that's true. And in a sense, I guess it is a stereotype. A stereotype is a fixed, commonly held notion or image of a person or group, based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior. Albeit, if someone spells "there" for ownership instead of "their", it's a dumb trait. Logic dictates that they should know better. The person may not be dumb, but they're not painting a wonderful image of their intelligence.
well, better than the older one, it was wierd tho, i do feel like getting lose to play football, but i don't want to loose to the other team, i dont think they're music is too loud, but definately get some chipoltle for urself, the wonderous smells effected me to, the whether right now is sunny w/ high 50's, i don't use facebook alot.
I have heard of a spelling rule .." i before e except after c" like in "friend" "thief " etc. and except after c.. like "receive"... or there is an exception when there is a sound of "a" , like in "neighbor " , "weigh" and "their" etc... But in the word "weird" why does "e" come before " i " , even though "weird" is not an exception of the rule?
@mrjzkhan There are actually more exceptions to that rule than there are adherents, so it's been shelved. Examples where 'e' comes before 'i': veil, beige, heist, feign, eight, surfeit, vein. The are also plenty of incidents involving 'cie': society, prescient, science, ect.
I get my information straight from the horses mouth, though I'm not sure how kind it is to call Steven Fry a horse.
@Burnscotts that was my point. I spelled it that way to make a joke. Anyway the word sucks is a very modern word and does not even belong in the dictionary. Now how stupid do you feel, moron.
my favorite text of all time... "wich place did you bye it at?" or maybe even worse yet "whith out the notes i cant do the werk" and last but not least "i noe cuz i went to colledge" makes me wonder what you did the whole (not hole) time you were there???? i actually copied these from my cell's inbox...sad i know :( to the authors you know who you are, we have talked about this and i hope you have learned a lesson from my fwd. of this video.
You forgot about "Witch" and "Which". I have many people say this to me when they text me on Facebook, or other talking sites. (See how I didn't type sights? As in the sights you see?))
God, I found those to be so annoying. I have a friend, and their first language is French. The sad part is, when they speak English, they spell properly, and know the proper usage of "Their" "They're" "There" "Which" "Witch" "One" "Won" "Two" "Too" "To" (etc) better than most people I know who speak the language.
One that you forgot to mention was the difference between "board" and "bored". I see people spell bored as board all the time, and it really, really irritates me.
I don't know about anyone else, but most of this stuff was ingrained in my brain in school. I usually strive for excellence, so I guess I just always refused to use the incorrect word, and therefore it became second nature.
I threw their ball over there; they're not too happy with me. It's not fun climbing that fence, considering it's fifteen years old. If its posts would be replaced, it would be fine, but for now I think I'll just buy a new ball.
I want to start out by saying that I Might misspell some words in this comment (I'm 15 and English is not my main language. Have some... how do you spell it...? sympathy?
I recommend a tool to everybody who gets little red underline allover there posts
That tool is Google Translate. It has somewhere around 50 languages and u can use it quickly to find words in English even if...
And get this...
Even if you can't properly spell them in your own language xD
I'm pretty forgiving of things that could easily be typos: your/you're, there/their/they're. The ones that drive me mad are, "rediculous", "retarted", "sence", etc. The ones which are clearly NOT a case of typo, or momentary confusion with homonyms. I'm talking about simple, basic words that any literate person over the age of 12, who has been raised with the English language should have nailed down.
how did you say , I wanna learn you some thing , I think It's I wanna teach you some thing. learn to get the information teach to give the information. right ?
"im stong. and i.will.kill.you.cunt. ahaha fuck you i cant belive you still arguing about this you have to been right so you can achieve in such small things like this. i really dont give a shit no shoo" <-- this was replied to me in an argument? W'THA FUCK!!!! I'ma go Grammar Nazi on his ASS! (Comment was posted by illrapeyoucunt)
This is one example that's a mix-up of all things that people "spelt" wrong. I have never seen this nor do i want too. Haha. "I r goin to teh stor will u come wit me?" "wat r we buyin" "we need moar buter."
I actually have a book titled, "The New York Times Dictionary or Misunderstood, Misused & Mispronounced Words." (Not quite sure how to underline that title by the way.) It is a great book, my mom was a reading teacher and used it quite often. "Quite," "Quit," and "Quiet," are some other words that some people will misspell often.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. While I occasionally slip up in grammar and spelling, I am a big fan of using it properly. I have a hard time restraining my instantaneous urge to correct improper usage/spelling. It's nice to know that there are other people out there just like me. :)
I made a comment on a Twilight Zone YouTube video. One of the reviewers responded by using improper grammar. Rather than start a flame war over the insult to me, I tried correcting his/her grammar. What ensued was a week-long tutorial in which I corrected the errors only to be rebuffed with the idea that correct grammar doesn't matter as long as the message gets across. Check out this zany exchange at The Twilight Zone: Dream Lover part 3 by thetwilightzone745.
I am a terrible (-- example (right?)) speller I don't mean to be ignorant (omg I spelled that word right!) I learned grammar and how to spell different words in this video
Lol! First of all, LOVE the videos. Second of all, I just want to say that this sort of thing is why I'm a huge supporter of making everyone take a foreign language. You pick up on a lot of things in your own language when you start learning a new one (i.e., subjunctive tense of verbs) about which you'd otherwise have no idea. Just saying, learning languages, particularly romance languages, helps cut down on grammar and spelling issues. :D
Forget all these people who are offended by the video, they are most likely piss poor spellers. Illiteracy should be intolerable and perceived as ignorance.
Heimdallr and Thor forbid you ever misspell a word... Un fur tha reckawd, won uvva funn bitts uv Inglish iz thet u can mispel fings. AND ALLOT IS A WORD.
Beautifully done. You summarized many of my grammar pet peeves. "To" and "Too" (and even Two???) could be in your next video. Another one that drives me insane is "would of." It's "would've" as in "would have." I've seen "could of," might of," and plenty more. You get the idea.
If others want to hassle me because I like proper spelling and grammar, that's fine. Just know that I've decided against hiring people because of grammar and spelling mistakes on an otherwise perfect resume.
I have to say, a lot of the words you say people need to learn to "spell" are more a case of homophones, and even the best spellers make mistakes with homophones when they don't reread their posts. (I almost did right there...>.>) It's less a case of needing to learn to spell the words than to know where to use them, so even if their web browsers do have a spell checker, it wouldn't catch the mistakes.
Aside from that, I liked the video. Yay for spreading good grammar and English skills!
see, I understand complaining about misspelled angry and insulting comments, and just comments in general, but don't you think it's just a little rude to complain when someone gives you a compliment? just sayin'. : /
I did like this video though. ^_^"
(but yes, it is nice when words that I could spell in 5th grade aren't spelled wrong on public web pages.)
Also, some people seem to have difficulty with "no", "know" and "now", and it really irks me. However, the ignorance and general laziness of the youth today (of which I am unfortunately a part of) means that they neither have the brains nor the motivation to use correct spelling/grammar. Do you happen to have Facebook? I hate to advertise things and seem like I'm nagging, but could you possibly join "Full Stop. [For Grammatically Correct People]"? If not, hopefu
Great video and thank you. i am one of those, otherwise inteligent fadults who has had spelling issues my entire life. You are helping me more than you know. Thanks. P.S dont hate to much on us non spellers. some of us are pretty fucking mean!!!!!! :) just kiding hahah
Love the video :) Other ways to remember how to spell "weird" and "definitely":
Weird has a weird spelling because it doesn't follow the "i before e except after c" rule.
Definitely has the word "finite" in the middle of it.
Also, those who make these mistakes actually are "ignorant" as the word means means "lacking knowledge or awareness." Now this doesn't have to be an insult, but it is a fact. If they don't want to be called ignorant, then they should gain the knowledge and awareness.
I feel the same misery when I'm trying to read fanfiction and the simplest words are misspelled or misused. "Your" for "you're" and "there" for "their" (or "thier", as it may be--grrrrr, arggghh). Is English NOT their first language?! If it isn't, let them get a beta, for goodness sakes, and spare my eyes. >:E
Oh, thank you! It annoys me so much when people mess up grammer! I'm considered the 'Part Time Grammer Police' in my circle of friends, so I always try my hardest to use good grammer. (Spelling's not so much my thing, sadly. Also, I'm not claiming to be perfect, just saying that I do try!) People actually get annoyed with me sometimes because I don't use 'text speak' when I'm texting and/or while I'm chatting to people while playing a game.
I passed your test with an A++! My grammar is very good because I care about how I spell words and when I have doubts about something, I turn to a diccionary! Anyways I think you´re super cool and graceful :o)
" I'am definatly affended by youre wierd 'rules'. its not theyre fualt that they cant right completaly perfect. their probaly effected by jurks liek you."
You're a man after my own pedantic heart! Fantastic. Re-posted to FB. Can your next one be on "I seen" and "I done" it's like fingernails down a chalk board to me. :) PS: Gee, I've been told I'm intolerant too. Go figure! ;) PPS: I'm with you, if you can't spell, put on spell check!
"Biches"
<3 BTW JacksFilms covers all this. There are more ridiculous usage of grammar than what you covered in the video. :)

You are now officially my hero.

People don't seem to understand that this is a contraction of "would have" and tend to spell it, and even SAY it, "would of".
