I play the alto sax in the marching band at my school and the bari in the jazz band. the first time i played it the director told me to go and get it for practice one day. the first thing we played was a blues warm up song and the director and the bari player from the past two years told me i had a better sound the first time i played than both of them by the end of the year.
@amysowell AWESOME, amy! Where are you? If you are in LA, I'll be glad to give you a lesson. I have a small teaching and recording studio in LA. Give me your email and I'll email you more info.
Cool. Keep playing. Just use a good harness, cause the bari is heavy. If you live in LA, stop by for a lesson. Keep up the good work, and don't forget to check out Gerry Mulligan, Serge Chaloff, Leo Parker, Nick Brignola, etc.
Nah, just kidding with you. Trick to bari is to relax and make sure the airflow is getting in the horn. It's not like the other saxes - the 'hold' is looser in the embouchure, if that makes sense. Having a kick-ass bari and mp helps too, and so does looooots of practice. ; )
You mean the mouthpiece? Custom made by Will Grizzle. No more around, I'm afraid. Checked out your page. I think it's great you're so into music, but don't neglect reading - all the greats read and brodaned their horizons this way - Charlie Parker, Dexter, Coltrane... Don't neglect the books, young grasshopper!
Mouthpiece is great. Don't remember what type of reed I was using here, but my mp's seem to like either Vandoren V16s or Rico Royal Jazz Selects in various shades of 3's, depending on the horn, (sop, alto, tenor, bari).
Guess what? I'm wearing one. One I made for myself that I want to mass-manufacture, so if you know any investors out there... Can't tell I'm wearing one, eh?
it doesn't have low A!!! i haven't played a bari without low a in soooo long. you don't know exactly how fun bari sax is until you play low a, lol. you sounded amazing. i've been playing bari for 6 years and i've played in my school's jazz band for 2 years now.
I have heard the low A's are stuffy, due to the extra metal - doesn't ring as freely. This is true of Low B vs. Low C flutes. I haven't played a low A bari yet, but it sounds like fun!
you know, if you play a low A and look at a computer or tv screen, it looks so trippy; everything starts to vibrate, and it'll eventually make you dizzy.
I dig the tone you get out of that, I play on an old Martin (vintage) and I get that same deep "saxy" growl =P
As soon as I figure out my stupid camera I'll have a video up on my page of me playing Moanin' at my senior concert in high school, complete with cadenza =)
Is it just me, or does he look like Malcom Tucker from "In The Loop"?

I love your vibrato. and your sound, you don't see many bari players with that type of talent anymore-coming from a sax player

How do I get a fat sound like you?

You get as SLIM as you possibly can be.

This is a great example of building an amazing solo, even when you have a short amount of time. Gorgeous sound!

Saxophonist,
What is the song on Blues Brothers with the wicked saxophone & heavy bass guitar? Not a song that they played. One that was on the radio.
treebreezelycos 3 years ago
Have no idea, but I used to play that Blues Brother's album on heavy rotation when I was a kid! Jake Elwood - yeah!

Nice job.
a small suggestion, get a harness. that thing will tear at your neck if you don't.

Neither. It's a one of a kind handmade piece from my luthier Will Grizzle, and he's not making anymore, I'm sorry to say.

Very nice, Dave! Wonderful what you can do with a tongue depressor and a few melted-down church bells!

What's the difference between a bari sax and a chain saw?
A chain saw doesn't have vibrato!
