Anyone else read Stephen's autobiography, when he talks about how terrified he was of doing this? And how he went to see a hypnotist to calm his nerves?
funny how poeple often remember things quite differently - in the book he says that it's hugh laurie delivering the cue sentence "hit it bitch", but actually he says it himself and it's "play it bitch". he even remembers telling him not to alter the line so the hypnosis would work. clearly, he has been trying to block out his memory of that night ;)
I can see Mr. Fry's fear when he's doing it. A very embarrassed childish facial expression... as if he was only 9. But it turned out so good that I occasionally lift my mood with it.
In his second autobiography, he said he was hypnotised so that when he said the line 'Play it, bitch,' he would be able to sing and dance, because he wouldn't have done it otherwise
Watching this you would never guess Stephen has an aversion to singing and dancing, absolutely ended myself laughing, especially loved it when Hugh put his hands between Stephens legs lol
@MrBen51309 There's a 'c/see' joke in their somewhere, isn't there. As in 'What key is it in?' 'A'. 'I said, what key is it in?' 'A!' 'I said, what-' 'I mean, it's in the key of A, see?' 'No, not C. Not C at all!' 'You don't see?' 'A. See?' etc etc. Missed a trick there, boys!
@eimead Honestly? I think the slow but constant Americanisation of UK TV has seen the standards of the British viewer drop. They don't want to think about a joke anymore it needs to be as loud & as obvious as possible...British comedy is the finest in the world and this is coming from an Irishman.
In his book doesn't he say that his cue to sing is Hugh saying 'Hit it Bitch' ?...... If I remember rightly he even says he has a conversation with Hugh emphasising the need to use those exact words incase the hypnosis doesn't kick in..... Confusing!
Indeed it did, indeed it did. And indeed he does say - 'play it bitch' - it is Stephen that gives Hugh the cue rather than High cueing Stephen as it appears in the book. Well, it was over 20 years ago, so either there's a misremembering OR there was another time he had to sing on SNL. I think the former, dear Mostyn!
I think this might have been the sketch that required Stephen Fry attend a hypnotist beforehand, such was his fear of singing on stage, as detailed in his latest autobiography, The Fry Chronicles...
Stephen had to get a hypnotherapist to get through this, such is his fear of performing musically. He talks about it in his first autobiography. The hypnotherapist made it so that when he heard the word 'Bitch' he would be filled with confidence so that he'd be able to perfrom.
Apparently Stephen had to see a hypnotist to help him overcome his fear of singing in public for this sketch, otherwise they would have had to cut it.
I'm so glad he decided to have the therapy. This is pure comedy gold!
Omg, my piano teacher was exactly like that!!! It's why I no longer play piano in an institute. I play better on my own without someone harassing me all the time while I play.
Stephen Fry is terrified of singing in public, and had to go through hypnosis to do this sketch. The only public singing performance he has ever given, apparently. It appears in his autobiography, Moab is my Washpot.
@BartBassist Yes, I remember this. Pretty incredible that it worked so well. Great autobio, btw, for people who are interested in knowing more about this magnificent man....
@BartBassist I've bought this book recently and have just passed that part yesterday, hence why I'm here watching it yet again now. I have a whole new level of respect for Stephen Fry, piled upon the already monstrous amount of fondness and respect that I had in the first place.
Fry and Laurie at their pure best. I don't think Stephen's voice is monotonous, just unpracticed. National fucking treasure. Laurie is awesome too, I just hope he gets out of House before it gets too ridiculous. It was good when they were going for the Sherlock Holmes thing, now it's all about psychotherapy. Gotta get paid, I s'pose.
It kind of reminds me of a gag Stephen did in his Dracula monologue. "'What blood type are you?', He said. 'A.' 'I said what blood type are you?' 'O,' I said, 'B.'
This is the only time that Stephen Fry sang isn't it? He talks about it in his autobiography, apparently he used hypnosis to get over his inability to sing but it only worked for that song (with the "Play it, bitch!")
