It is just a term used to refer to those that come from Spanish speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere. His father could be of Caribbean heritage as well. Many people get called African American when they may be from the Caribbean islands or Africa etc. Sorry if I misinterpreted anything of which you were trying to say.
