I load my bike facing backwards. Then when it's time to unload I just pull in the clutch, gas the shit out of it, and wheelie it out of the truck... my comment is total bullshit by the way. Please idiots do not try this lol.
@skiraf Absolutely! I don't own a double wide ramp, and I don't have the space to keep one either. (I am loading in a parking garage here underneath my apartment building at the time).
to unload a biek bymyself i will put the bike in first gear (without the bike running) this will make the rear wheel a brake when you let the clutch out. so now you have control of braking both wheels on the way down. and tie your strap to your truck like this guy.
your less likely to drop it just riding it on, scary but not hard, all you have to do is drive straight for 7feet, if you're not confident you can do that you probably shouldn't have a bike. This message isn't aimed at the dude in the video, great job to him, but im short and would have a hard time doing this.
Oh Hell naw, always 2 ramps one for the bike and one for you to walk up along side, I went to a local recycle shop and got 2 aluminum scaffold sections for under $50
Nicely done. I have an ST1100 and at 640lbs would not have the balls to load it like that. You see so many fails that's a treat to see someone who has thought it through.
Hey buddy I'm looking to get a dirtbike sometime before the end of next season would the same tactic work if I was loading it on a 2wd Ranger or am I gonna have to do something different to load it and secure it?
Thanks for the video, inspired me to try it myself. Luckily after I stalled it about the 12th time (for really good luck) my neighbor came out to help me.... lol
haha when i rode dirtbikes we would just ride up the ramp, easy on the brakes thought...rubber+smooth metal truckbed=slide....ohly fell out of the truck box twice :) ...would not trust myself enough to do this with a street bike though lol
I use a 2X12 pretreated deck board to load my yamaha 650 and it works great,I drilled 2 holes in the end threaded 1/4 in rope through them and tie them to the hooks in the pickup bed so it won't come out while loading,it's an 8ft board.
I know that ** moment. Good on you for thinking to add the steps. I found the best ramp is an old steel door. Big and wide enough you can walk it up. Pickup trucks are pretty high tho. minivans are the best, nice and low.
@scotch123bright .....................right because its worth the risk of damaging the bike for nothing ....if the bike is off centre just a little you are holding up the bikes weight with your body unbalenced on top of that the older model sport bike are WAY heavyer than the average person can lift
@beamjack Glad to see that you were able to load your bike like this as it is rather hard for many people especially for anyone with a short stature. Anyway, for a few extra bucks it's recommended to use a hitch step system if you plan to load with one ramp. Otherwise, for single person loading it's well worth the investment in a larger ramp system which would have multiple sections allowing for easy walk up and clearance. -DiscountRamps
that looks very nice. i got one myself of Rollinbike. Thats some sort of system which is very often used in Europe. only your way of loading the motorcycle into the truck seems quite unstable in comparison with mine.
Hey beamjack. I loaded my motorcycle onto my porch with a similar ramp cause it's been raining practically every day. I was wondering, when I unload it off the porch is it easier/safer to walk it back or walk it forward. I have the option of going forward cause the porch is pretty big. Let me know what you think.
@Equatis I'm not expert, but I would think it would be easier to walk it off forward. That way you don't have to worry about not seeing where your feet are going, and it just seems more natural to me to push the bike forward rather than pull it backwards.Post up when you do it and let us know how it goes!
@beamjack You're right. I tried it backwards alone and almost dropped it. If the back tire is just a little off it's a pain to correct it when steering it from the front. I put it in gear and ran it down forward mixing front brake with clutch and it was a piece of cake. Thanks for the video.
I'd rather rent a easy load trailer from u haul..easy load and unload..after watching that all I can say is yikes! but obviously you have the skill to pull it off.
My friends ride Hardlys and have trailers and such, I have a Victory Kingpin that has never been in a truck or on a trailor sence I picked it up fromt he dealership. Ive been from Galviston Tx all the way up to Montana near the Canadian Border and will probably hit Florida to California by the end of the year. No need for repairs or loading my bike. the only loading I do is putting bags and camping equipment on the bike.
I'm shorter so I just crank up the idle speed so I don't have to reach over the bike to reach the throttle. So I have one hand on the clutch and the other hand by the seat or rear of the bike to brace it. Then when I need to step up on the tailgate, I turn off the bike, let the clutch out with it in gear so it won't roll back, step up on the tail gate, restart it and drive the rest of the way up. That is the short man way.
That's brilliant! I believe there is a ramp out there with a kink in it part way up so that you can rest the bike there without fear of it rolling backwards. Then you can step up into the truck and go the rest of the way. You sound like you have a pretty good method!
I load my bike pretty much the same way, did a vid from the opposite angle (the rear), cept my ramp is home made and i use a folding step stool. Cruiser, sport bike or dirt bike it's all about clutch control. Unloading I put the bike in gear and grab the clutch so i have both the front brake and rear wheel to brake with.
In my younger days, with one ramp, I'd just ride my enduro right up in there. Now I'm a little older, I use a second ramp and just walk right up beside as I go... much easier.
I hear ya. I have a dirt bike now too and that one I just walk right up into the truck since it weighs so much less. Not sure I'm willing to try riding it in though at this point.
The ramp I was using in this video is a ReadyRamp. The nice thing about it is that it doubles as a bed extender as the bed on my Crew Cab Frontier is only 5' long with the gate up, and so I need to have the gate down. The bad thing about the ReadyRamp is that it has rungs like a ladder, and so you need a little more momentum to keep the motorcycle traveling up the ramp.
Yeah, this truck has rails down each side of the bed. I have brackets that attach to the rails and I hook one end of a tie down on each side. I use four tie-downs total, which may or may not be overkill, but it works for me.
my problem is on my 2000 f150 is where your suppose to install the eye rings it is completely rusted away and useless. I figured my best bet is to drill holes in the bed and install some kind of ring for me to secure my bike. I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything like what I'm talking about but I know it exist cus I see people with the bikes secured to the bed and not the rails. I have a 600lb Goldwing so securing it to the rails isn't an option either way
Excellent vid! I was loading mine by just pushing it up with 2 ppl. I will still use 2 ppl but ill try keeping it running so its not so hard to push! Any advice for unloading?
When unloading I don't have the bike running and I actually find it easier. Just use the front brake lever to control how quickly the bike comes down the ramp and be careful on the step down out of the truck.
If you look closely, it is strapped to the gate. But yes, I can only imagine what it feels like to fire the ramp backwards with the back tire spinning! ;)
