The problem is very real, but this video appears fake. Unless the gas tank was ruptured and cleanly spread gas along the runway, the line of fire that appears behind the car would be fake and caused by some substance placed there beforehand. At the speeds that the CVPI was hit at, the gasoline from the ruptured tank would have been spread out and would have gotten everywhere, including on the Taurus, causing the Taurus to explode as well.
In a crash at 80+ mph, the entire vehicle would be the crush zone, no matter where the gas tank is located, but in minor to moderate collisions, the location of the fuel tank does make a difference.
Even a Smart Car would be a safer car to be in than at Town Car, Crown Victoria, or Grand Marquis after being rear ended like that. For is CRAZY to put the gas tanks in the rear crumple zone behind the rear axle. I guess they never learned from the Pintos.
I've seen the entire video, which is a promo for a company that makes a product to protect against this. The focus seems to be on police cars and the fact they're hit morethan you or me. While they didn't say much about non crowns, they seemed to make the point that the location of the tank is one of the reasons that so many officers have been killed. I think they said 18, but I thought I saw somewhere else that it was more like 25. It might be an old video.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Ford Crown Victoria is a very old design, with the fuel tank mounted behind the rear axle, inside the crush zones. Ironically, law enforcement, with their high risk of rear end collisions, chose the most vulnerable car. Beyond the fire risk, the Crown Vic doesn't do that well in other iihs tests. It's junk.
idk... but that tarus was going really fast... it was on a track... it sounded like a jet... i think at that speed most cars rear ended will catch on fire
the new fire supression system in the 2005 models+up saves alot of lives. it realy works to. did for me a few months ago! rear end colision into me, i saw fire in mirror, i hit button mounted on roof infront of mirror, put fire out! its amazin!
exactly im guessing most people havent seen the smart car take a head on collision test at 75 mph... the little egg looked like all u needed was a new front end and it would be on the road again... that car is on the road for a reason and its not because its not safe
Better chance of survival taking that impact in that crown vic than you'd have in say, a "smart"...... crown vic is probably one of the safest cars on the road.
How many people have been killed as a result of this fuel tank design?
* This questions has been answered in many different ways. To date, over 1600 people have been killed in C/K truck accidents involving fires. To determine the cause of death, each accident must be carefully analyzed by experts.
Pretty sure the Panther design (Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, Town Car) has only killed like 12 or so in post rear crash fires like this one. No design is going to be 100% safe, especially when you deal with such high speeds as many of these vehicles are exposed to when out on interstate traffic stops and you have traffic, including heavy-duty trucks, driving upwards of 80 mph sometimes.
Look you pompous little 21 year old prick! ANY vehicle that takes an rear end impact at 80 miles an hour or more will rupture a fuel tank. When you have a fuel tank rupture their is always a potential fire hazard, not the EXPLOSION that your to fucking brain dead to comprehend. Try it on any car hitting it that fast...the gas tank will probably explode. It's a conspiracy against Ford... The Caprice cop cars used up until '96 had a flat mounted gas tank under the trunk, so you mean to tell me, if hit with that much force, they didn't leak? Blah.
The types of accidents that account for these "defects" are of the nature that ANY car would suffer the same fate. Yes, even a Honda. Stop blaming Ford and get on with your life.
I'd like to add that these accidents are very "circumstantial". How many people, sitting still in a CV, get hit that hard-- besides cops-- at over 70 MPH from behind? Don't blame the car, blame the situation. Don't want to be killed? Don't be a cop. It's part of accepting the job.

They all have the problem, even the 84 Crown Vic and the 89 Town Car.
Town Car, Mark VI, Grand Marquis, and Crown Victoria have been built on the Panther platform (EST'D 1978).
The fuel tank design and placement are largely unchanged with all model years on the Panther.
The design problem is that the fuel tank is located within the crumble zone area just behind the rear axle, rendering it vulnerable to puncture in a rear end collision.
Watcher3223 4 years ago
Design changes to mitigate the hazard is the installation of a fuel tank with an internal bladder cell and the installation of a protective shield.
Watcher3223 4 years ago
Same problem; the 1984 Crown Victoria is built on the same Panther platform that the current Crown Vics/Grand Marquis are built on.
The design of the fuel tank and its placement are essentially the same.
