That's why they had her turn back into Dark Phoenix and commit suicide. Later on, Claremont wanted to bring her back for X-Factor, but the editor-in-chief would only agree if Jean was cleared of genocide. *That's* why they made the Phoenix into the Phoenix Force.

You have a point there. It would be hard to show her dying of radiation and thus needing to be replaced by the Phoenix (although perhaps not impossible), so they had the Phoenix attack Jean, knock her out and possess her body. And it would be bad to show Jean/Phoenix destroying an inhabited solar system, so the cartoon people depopulated it. This allowed them to bring back parts of the original ending which allowed Jean to survive after all.
I'm not sure. I know professor X saw the future through apocalyps' mind and saw the phoenix, but I think the series may have ended after that.
I'm a big fan of Wolverine and the X-men right now. I hated how quickly they did away with the phoenix though. I would've like to have seen more power, more flair, something that truly implied to you its immense power. Instead they got rid of it immediately after it was released.
I think that if they continued the series, they would have had the Phoenix saga in there as well. Unfortunately, they didn't. I don't know how they would've had Jean turn into the Phoenix but most likely it would've been like the other cartoons -- the Phoenix possesses Jean's body either in space (X-Men: the Animated Series) or at birth (Wolverine and the X-Men) -- or through some other way. We'll never know, however.
If anyone here knows who Tetsuo Shima is or the anime AKIRA which is one of the best animated films of all time from 1988 frame by frame animation. Tetsuo Shima could battle The Phoenix. Specially his manga/novel counter part. I would love to see them battle, as Tetsuo Psychic Powers are beyond control, and basically is a God. That would be a epic battle!

the phoenix saga was the best! so glad its on dvd now. but i hated! the movies! FOX didnt show Phoenix nearly to her full power and then killed her off again. apparently she is alive though, so it better get good or i will be massive pissed.
the movies will never out do the tv show or the comics.
