Ahem, allow me to sum up. *Ah-hem* This was a TV production from the Cannon Fairy Tale collection, and was released in 1987. Yes, this movie is campy, but delightfully campy as are most of the Cannon films.

Belle is the French word for Beauty, and seeing as most productions are either from the de Beaumont story or the de Villeneuve tale (which this production is based on), her name is given the literal translation. In most versions of the tale, she is known as Beauty.

The prince in this movie seemed gay to me (had no real chemistry with the actress who played Beauty), & that kiss at the end of the movie was frigid (as if it was the last thing he wanted to do). I also didn't like the makeup done on the Beast, made him look more like a wolf, and he was always growling, even when he was calm, which I found dumb and annoying. But if you can ignore all that you might enjoy this movie. Kids that don't scare easily might like it too.

I recently purchased & watched this low budget B-movie. It's not great, the acting it's pretty amateurish, but it's entertaining & I've always loved the story, though my all time favorite is the 1980's wonderful Beauty and the Beast TV series, where the Beast is a lion-man (a man with leonine features) who's truly beautiful inside & out who does not turn into an ordinary human once he wins the love of a woman, his soul-mate & truelove, Catherine.
