That Old Lift Mechanic is right when he say that relay logic and processor logic are a different ball game. I,ve been exposed to both types of systems. Nowadays I deal more with Microprocessors but it is always good to go back to the old relay jobs. I just love watching young apprentices jaws dropping when they see older jobs. Its Like comparing Logarithum tables with an electronic calculator.
@jorologo kind of reminds me of simpler times - all those wires and relays, if one day someone found a disused elevator with everything intact and made it work again...
yeah, me too. If you look at other videos on youtube on these lifts, you'll probably notice that they have been updated now, so all this stuff has probably gone.
Do you know much about these relay/selector cabinets like Dave does? ...or is it only the blokes that look his age (bald on top) that know nowadays!?
Know the basics about them but when I started the Microprocesser control had taken over and over the last 14 years most of the old stuff I have previously seen has been modernised. There are very few jobs I know now that use selectors. If I were as old as Dave and been in the same job for nearly 30 years I would probably know as much as him. But He will probably struggle with the 411s like he said "different ball game"
I was resident in a job for 3 years and served part of the appenticeship there. It was the single most expensive service contract in the UK at that time with 12 external gearless elevators travelling 12+ floors. I decided with a lot of encouragement ( It was a big salary drop !) to move on to a new section as I wasn't learning anything new. It was a shock coming out and seeing all this strange equipment and controllers and using a test tool to do things!!
Luckily I was put with an experienced engineer who I sooned learned from. We used to get calls at 1 big job in the city where no lifts would respond to a ground landing call ( Complex Otis VIP Controllers similar to the Hancock Job ) they would zone to there floors and would then not respond to the call. Trouble was it was almost impossible to find the fault as if somebody on another floor got in and went to a floor the elevators would rezone and fault cleared
I will be going up the otis 94 stories in the hancock in august :D and the modernised westinghouse 103 sotries in the sears tower

@jorologo yeah, I miss the old relay and generator jobs - maybe it's just nostalgia, a bit like vinyl LPs - more hassle, but more character as well

Why did he close his account? He had good motor room vids. Did Otis make him do it or something?

Yes I know, it's a shame that he closed his second account. Not many people posting stuff on motor rooms now.

Are you still here on youtube? Your account says it's closed!!? Nooo, surely not!?
mrmattandmrchay 2 years ago
Yes, and relays are much easier to repair. If one fails, then one can be replaced easily.
CaptainElevator42189 2 years ago
Relays are far better there is no delay with the doors closing and the lift moving
