  • People need to know that the Public sector job does nto create any goods or services, thye get their capital from tax payers. Private sectors do create goods and services, thus earning their capital from consumers. So Private sector may get paid more than Public sector because they make their money, while public sector jobs take money from tax payers. So cut hte crap about ppl in hte public SEctor wanting a good paid job, go find a private sector job then.

  • I would like to see these guys run into a fire or try to fight a fire with an understaffed piece of apparatus. Look at how many people in past years have lost their lives in areas where the closest fire station's were shut down, yet they still insist on closing more.

  • @goodwill2ndin Sleeping in bunk beds with men and sliding down greasy poles is nothing compared to what a crab fisherman does over the Bering Sea who can't even step out on deck with out risking his life, or how about the bomb squad for the military; who risk having their legs and appendages blown off to keep some asshole like your safe who could care less why you do your job.

You don't have a damn clue what danger is, so shut the hell up.

  • I'm not a fan of unions but I see some people calling for the privatization of education and police and other stuff. My questions is how do you do that, how is that possible??? And please keep the answer as simple as possible...I'm only 20 years old lol!!!

  • @Marakulous43 Privatization comes down to entrepreneurs and private sector contractors. Rather than forcing every (taxpaying) citizen to pay for public education (regardless of cost), the parents would receive a voucher for their share of the education funding. The parent would decide where/how that money is spent, which leads to better schools because private sector educators need to optimize their competitive advantage (ie, quality and cost) to stay in business. (continued)

  • @Marakulous43 Privatization of police is also through private businesses (contractors) competing to be hired to enforce the law. Today, a store owner hires a security guard (provided a security company, not police dept.) with the incentive to find the best guard for the price. LEOs would be working for private contractors competing with one another to provide the best service. Think of it as states and cities seeking to hire the best (quality for the price) security guards.

  • Interesting to note that many Fire depts. are first responder in medical emergency in addition to the burning building. And I am under the impression that most public employees contribute a % to salary thier PERS Accts. It sure would be nice to have more facts FOX.

  • Farming and Fishing are more dangerous jobs then being a Fireman or Police Officer. That is just a fact.

  • Firefighters don't have much to do? Ok, when you need to get pulled from a burning building, why don't you just do that yourself. The next time something like 9-11 happens, go ahead and save yourself there too. Its all a giant waste of money until you need it!

  • @Nelson5011 These people would do our job but they lack the balls. They are haters and have never walked in our boots, and never will.

  • Seriously, do people even know the difference between Public & Private Sector Unions?

  • PWNED by Stossel!!!

  • As a fireman I think those 3 guys need to do a couple 24 hr shifts with FDNY or another city department. or better yet live off what those guys get paid for a year. and take the time loss with their families as well.

  • @CPDCFD . I'm not a full timer but I agree with you. What would this country do if we all took 2 weeks off. half the damn country would burn to the ground.

  • @CPDCFD Dude, I live in Chicago too. I'd hate to say it but if you're in the Fire department for the money please go away, Chicago and Illinois have been broke for a long time, that's why we got that pretty 5% tax hike (among other hikes) and cuts in many other services while you assholes aren't hurting at all. I'm sorry, I have a real job and have to actually make a real salary and I can't make my living off of robbing taxpayers. Go ahead and strike, we'll just replace you.

  • @s0beit First off FUCK YOU PUSSY. Second, I never attacked you like you attacked me. Next time your apt or whatever car you live in is on fire put it out yourself. Show us asshole fireman that you dont need our service that way the citizens can justify firing all of us useless fireman. PS. I own property so I AM A TAXPAYER and pay my own wages too. Now go back to your water cooler in your lame office job and let the real men "myself" be responsible for saving someone life at 4am.

  • @CPDCFD You're just a fucking asshole holding our city hostage, you would enjoy to see people burn alive just so you can get a higher pension. I don't want that, but, I'd rather people be unsafe for a while, while we replace selfish, ignorant, morons like you and get you dangerous criminals far, far away from anything related to a government position.

Firemen die. It happens, HELLO, real world, that doesn't make you center of the universe. Get a different job if you don't like serving the city.

  • @s0beit 3 fireman died in 2010 here in Chicago doing there job while COWARDS like you sat back in you nice warm office pushing paper thinking that one day you may actually grow some balls. Nice dream but never will it be your reality. At fires all I see is PUSSIES like you crying for the big asshole fireman to pull them out the burning building, DUDE. Funny how all you cowards RAN out those towers on 911 while the asshole fireman died trying to help you office pussies.

  • @CPDCFD "Civil servants" my ass, you're just a bunch of thugs with your finger on the button. Enjoy your time at the top while people are burning alive on your little strike, i hope that pension is big enough to pay for a better conscience.

  • @CPDCFD HEY chump how come no one is attacking the WELFARE SYSTEM and FREE HOSPITAL & schools for all illegals? You want to talk abuse, you are fucking clueless. This shit isnt reported much because it will start a race riot. You are an uninformed know it all. Yes fireman are the enemy your must be right.

  • @CPDCFD The government is the enemy, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and so on and so forth said so. The fire department and the police department are just agents of the government. It isn't the people that are wrong, it's the system that's made them feel so damned entitled. To be honest privatized FF units is a much easier argument than privatized police forces, but both would be cheaper and most likely better done.

  • @daPlumber702 If you knew Chicago Politics you would be more informed. Back before the unions "1980" if you bosses didnt like you they would change your fire house. If your connected you get everything, overtime was never payed etc, etc. The fire dept wanted a union because the City of Chicago SHITTED on its employees. Get the point?? Also, there are financial / control reasons why govts. want to keep fire and police. Privatization isnt always the answer. We are here to protect you, get it?

  • @daPlumber702 TOO MUCH government is bad, the govt. isnt the enemy. I just go to work and do my job, I dont feel entitled. Look at the WELFARE SYSTEM for entitled people who never want to work, party all day and fuck / reproduce like rabbits. Are you OK with that? Or illegals get they entitlement, how does that make you feel?

  • @CPDCFD Any amount of government will eventually lead to too much. Hence it's all the enemy, and needs to be kept in line at all times.

Never said those that live off of the welfare system or illegals don't feel entitled many do... although from personal experience I can say that it isn't true for all of them. I wasn't even attacking you personally, you have very little real control over your union (I'm of course assuming as a FF you would be in a union.) and the leaders of those unions tbc

  • @daPlumber702 Some of your points I respect but I never said other jobs are not dangerous and I dont carry an entitled chip on my shoulder. Our unions are not as good as they should be either. Our pensions are being invested / abused by our last Mayors nephew who is pissing away millions in real estate ponsi scams. The cities pension board has 7 members, 1 is from the fire dept and 6 are from the city. My pension is abused and now they want citizens to pay more to fund them. See the lite?

  • @CPDCFD feel that you as a Firefighter are entitled, even though crab fishing is on average about twice as dangerous. You're getting upset when you don't need to. I'm saying that if the Police and Fire departments you work for were private, you'd make better money, probably have better hours, be better protected, and I wouldn't have to pay your check at the end of the week unless you personally saved my house from burning down. Win/Win.

  • @daPlumber702 If we were private then we would have to generate income. Many paramedic companies are private and your insurance gets charged and they generate income which supports the private company. Private companies have stripped most benefits for the employee. Before the failed 401k scheme, your parents and grandparents had a pension " IBM etc". They didnt protest and lost it, now these co. saved billions and the big stock holders and executive got rich on our backs. We are all screwed.

  • I get your point but; I pay property tax and 80% goes to the Failed public school system, guess what some of those dollars go to pay for teachers pensions. We get NO social security and 9% of my income goes to my pension contribution, SS is 6.5%. My accountant friend made more money in 1996 working an office then what I make in 2011. If you think I make great money, try living in a big city on my income. If I got payed my salary in a small town I would be doing Great.

  • I never said they were worng. I said it would be nearly impossible to fund a private fire depatment unless your Bill Gates. In Ohio the IAFF is willing to give up the collective bargaining as long as they don't cut the staffing in the departments but the politicians said no. I love how they compare everything to Cali. Why? They fail to mention that Cali also holds 30% of this nations welfare. Most of it goes to illegals who are allowed to have it. Now thats a govt flaw.

  • Everyone compares what firefighters make in California. They need to start looking in other regions. In the Tampa Bay area, the average starting pay for a firefighter is around 35k. Some pay into their own pension. Firefighters pay are going to be affected by the type and cost of living in those areas. Also a majority of firefighters are EMTs/Paramedics. Especially in Florida.

  • I'm a LT in a Citrus Co in Florida. We run a combination system Career and Vol Firefighters. Our base pay for Fighfighter is 32,000 a year. I'm an Officer and I only make 40,000 a year. I haven't seen a yearly merit raise in 4 years. My wife works for the county as well she hasne't seen a yearly raise in 4 years either. and now the only thing we've got left are our benefits. health and pensions. There are places where firefighter are paid a lot more a year. but there in heavily populated areas

  • do they realize that everyday a fireman might not come home to see his kids they deserve every little penny

  • @Firefighter72BG

A fireman with no college degree does not deserve a $90,000 a year pension, plus free health benefits for life starting at age 50.

  • @TimeWarp66 a 2 year degree is required to become a firefighter

  • @TimeWarp66 but people like charlie sheen and lindsay lohan deserve every penny they get but the only time they EVER put their life on the line is when the do drink do drugs and get in their car and drive under the influence or over paid athletes like A-rod and derek jeter who get paid so much money to do what???? not put their life on the line i know that much

  • @TimeWarp66 No college degree could prepare an individual for this job. Many firefighters do have degrees in Fire Science. Until you have done the job or at least the training please do not comment because you have no clue.

  • @ntfd125

You do not deserve a $90,000 a year salary at age 50, at tax payer expense, just because you spray water on fires for a living.

  • @TimeWarp66 My salary is 70,000 with OT and benefits. Spray water? You really think that is all we do. Our duties consist of medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, structure fires, hazmat, good intent calls, building inspections, public education, water rescue and many more just look it up. Maybe you should walk in our shoes for a week or even just a day. If you don't like to pay then move to a rural area with volunteer services.

  • @ntfd125

1)Look at it this way, the only way a public employee makes money is by robing his fellow man in the private sector through the form of taxation. The private sector is self sustaining, while the public sector is a leach on productive activity, making everything less productive.

    2) Building inspections make the cost of living go through the roof and don't make buildings any safer. All education should be privatized. Along with any form of emergency medical treatment.

  • @TimeWarp66 A private fire department would never work in a city. Search Grants rural pass fire department its a perfect example. What you don't inderstand is either way you will have to pay. A private department works off of donations if you don't donate then there will be no fire department. The cost to run high call volume department is insane. Do you know the cost of an engine today? Average is 500,000 and a truck (ladder) is around 750,000 without equipment. So 1.5 million to buy and equip.

  • @TimeWarp66 Building inspections do not make the cost of living higher. In my city if they comply for an entire year they get a tax break. Not safer? What happens when an apartment's smoke alarms don't work and lives are lost. We prevent that from happening. Or if we have a high rise fire and the stand pipe system dosen't work and firefighters die. We prevent that. Or a night club catches and the fire exits are blocked or chained up. we prevent that. Would you be able to afford private school?

  • @ntfd125

It's in the self interest of a landlord to keep his building safe!

What, you think he wants all his tenants to die in a fire!?!?! Then how would he make any money?

You think people are just to stupid to run their lives so the government has to do it for them.

In a free market, everyone would be able to afford private school.

  • @TimeWarp66 Contractors take shortcuts to save money and landords do anything to make more money. In NY and DC they have problems all the time. Landords take a building zoned for 2 families and turn it into 4-6 families. People do not always follow the rules that is why we have law enforcement. You make it sound like every landord is a caring person. They want money, that is why they are in that field.

  • @ntfd125

The only way to make "more money" is by serving your customers well. Have you even spoken to any business owners or landlords? Anyone who is mildly successful in the marketplace will tell the way to make money is not by taking shortcuts, but by giving your customers the highest quality products.

You don't have to "care" about someone to serve them. Did the company that sold you this computer care about you? No. But they gave you a quality product without any government regulations.

  • @TimeWarp66 You must live in a perfect town. Have you ever heard of the slums? Just because they are successful doesn't mean they do it by the book. You have to pay for quality so the single parents who make minimum wage look for the lowest cost and those are usually the worst buildings. There are many stories of firefighters and tenants dieing in illegally zoned buildings or contractors not going by the book. A popular one is the Deutsche bank in NYC.

  • @TimeWarp66 As for govt. regulations. Say you build a house and there are no regulations whos to say the house is safe. Contractors look for the cheapest way. Thats why construction went from rafters to trusses because trusses are cheaper but not as strong. Thats also why they opposed the sprinkler bill and they have publicly stated that it will add more cost.

  • Why would any producer not want to provide a safe product? They will go out of business. It is in every producers interest to provide the best(safest) product at the lowest price. Government just gets in the way.

A lot of these bills that claim to add safety, really just add cost and not any safety to keep out competition. The big construction companies can afford to meet the new requirements, while smaller competitors starting up cannot. This raises prices and hurts consumers

  • @TimeWarp66 People do not have the money to pay for the best product therefore they will settle with the lowest product. To get the best product you have to pay for it. Ex. Go to walmart and look at the cheap version of a hand mixer. Then compare it to GE's hand mixer. In your thinking GE's $30 product should be the same as the Cheap $7 product. You have to pay for quality. You can't charge less than what it takes to make the product because then you won't make money.

  • @TimeWarp66 Do some research on the home sprinkler bill and tell me what you think. By the way its not just the smaller contractors its the entire builders association which includes the big successful companies. Theres are two reason why they oppose. 1. The sprinkers will add another 4-6 thousand more. 2. There is less damage to the structure which means a smaller paycheck for the contractor. The insurance companies are giving lower rates to homeowners with residential sprinklers.

  • @ntfd125

Poor people may not be able to afford that $6,000 increase. You are in affect locking people into poverty.

Watch a few Milton Friedman videos here on youtube about government regulation.

  • @TimeWarp66 What increase? Its only for new homes not pre-existing. Usually poor people do not build new homes. I don't need to watch because most of the people who criticize the govt are biased. Including the guy in this video who makes a hell of a lot more than me (he does nothing) and he also fails to mention that he is a member of union too(broadcast union).

  • @ntfd125 Theirs nothing wrong with private sector unions. Government unions are the problem. You collectively bargain to vote yourselves other people's money.

  • @Firefighter72BG many jobs are dangerous in the public sector where a productive worker (not you) might not come home to see his kids, i.e. fisherman, coal miners, factory workers in steel mills, oil platform workers in the gulf coast, high rise steel construction workers, etc., etc.

  • im a new york city firefighter and they are lookin to cut our pensions and benefits when we retire as well. none of this union or pension bashing was around when the private sector, and the stock market was getting rich. people like myself took a city job for the security. we wont get rich, but a fair wage over a career and a healthy retirement is the trade off when the rest of the world is getting rich. i'd like to see these guys get dressed with heavy bunker gear in july and fight a fire

  • hey stossel next time someone breaks into your house or your have a medical emergency call your butt buddies at fox to help. or when your house burns call those slapdicks in your audience and bring the marshmellows

  • Comment removed

  • @TheFiremancarl yup I agree with you Firemancarl. Stossel don't go calling the cops to come save you sorry ass after you get you ass beat or house broken into. Don't call on the firemen to come save you when you can't breath, or have a heart attack, or get in a car accident, or your house catches on fire. Just put the fire out yourself and fix yourself.

  • @Bombero359

You're an idiot. When did he argue to abolish the police and fire departments!?!?!

He just doesn't want ti bankrupt the country by paying you people way more than is affordable. Get educated.

  • @Bombero359 see that is the problem with you govt employees. youare a clique that think that because you do your job that youare the only ones that can do it. Youare a criminal gang that sticks together and only hires your other butt -udies and then threaten all us with threats liek your not going to do your job. There are thousand s of people who want your job fool!!!!! thousands of peopel that would lve to ahve your job you little monkey and you know it!!!

  • actually police and fire are both listed as 12th and 13th most dangerous jobs.

  • They should do a story on florida.... We are drastically under paid compared to other states.

  • Unions steal

  • UNIONS are a waste!
