  • Neutering a dog increases their chance of progressive geriatric cognitive impairment.

  • Dr. Greg, You are the greatest. Thankyou for all your hard work. You are a real blessing to animal lovers.

  • @anaxonic Thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching

  • I wanna be a vet when I'm older too... I was hoping they'd show the surgery

  • @Mojustinlove Look at the other videos, there is lots of surgery!

  • Great Video. getting my golden male neutered soon. Also i want to be a vet when am older

  • @FurrylittlePaws Thanks for watching. It's a great job!

  • Just my luck, I turned the volume up loud as soon as he says "Just gotta make sure both testicles are here." When my mom was right next to me.

  • @savedbygrace430 Sorry I spoke out of turn...whoops. Bad timing huh? Pretty funny! Thanks for watching!

  • hey i have got another good site techyvety com

  • sounds good

  • @techyvety Thanks for watching and letting me know about the site.

  • Altering your pets is the most responsible choice! Letting dogs and cats run around un-altered is just the ignorance of some worthless people.

  • @blazinghot18 How can we make it affordable and easy to do for people with no money or transportation. Then it would be really helpful. I have thought that castration of cats could be done by trained technicians and possibly dog neuters and cat spays. Or overseen by one vet with a number of technicians..

  • @DrGregDVM If you don't have money you shouldn't own an animal. Bottom line.

  • @blazinghot18 I grew up very poor and lots of people are in the same boat. I feel kids should be able to experience that bond regardless of income.

  • poor dog he is gunna loose his nuts and your asking him if he is happy

  • @TheGFtrooper You're right bad question. Good thing is all dogs hear is blah, blah, blah

  • @DrGregDVM lol

  • @TheGFtrooper LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • Greyhounds race, bets are placed, the dogs race muzzled so as not to bite one another—the owners could've had their dogs' teeth extracted but instead they chose muzzles as the solution to this periodic problem & danger. Obviously, the dogs needn't be muzzled at all times. How hard is it anyway to keep a bitch in estrus away from intact male dogs? Keep her penned when she's in heat, as her condition is fleeting. Like a storm-cloud it shall pass.

  • @SufferInJuly Racing greyhounds are not family pets involved with children and other dogs. Dogs in heat and intact males may fight or lash out. Severe dog and human injuries may result

  • @DrGregDVM : Surely, you jest? "Dogs in heat and intact males may fight or lash out. Severe dog and human injuries may result"? Were people & pets, before the advent of universal castration, routinely being treated in emergency rooms across the land for "severe" injuries inflicted by horny dogs? There are thousands of dog-breeders in the U.S. Dog-breeding is a family-based business more often than not. NEVER have I been threatened by a dog in heat.

  • @CelestialEmbodiment Domesticated pets were not as much a part of our families before universal castration. They were ranch dogs and outside dogs. Breeders often know how to house dogs and read body language. Many people may get in trouble with intact male dogs arguing over a female.

    Have you raised animals?

  • Daytona Beach has a greyhound track and a retired greyhound adoption service. The greyhounds are adopted out unmuzzled.

  • I volunteer at my Animal Hospital. What Grad College did you go and apply for? Thank you.

  • @Chococat1720 I went to UC Davis for my zoology degree, then for my DVM degree. You can transfer from most colleges...you just have to get good grades.

  • hey doc.. my dog is 5 months his a pitbull and he only has 1 nut what should i do? should i get him neutered or just leave it how it is? and if i dont get him neutered how long can he live?

  • @MoNsTeRDeviiDa If you neuter him take both out. It is twice as expensive to remove one from inside. If he is not aggressive or humpy just leave him the way he is. The chance for tumors or other problems is very low

  • @MoNsTeRDeviiDa Chances are he will live just as long not being neutered

  • @MoNsTeRDeviiDa if u dont wanna get the surgery for him a vet can give him an injection that basically stops the testes from working but doesnt make him lose them and its an inexpensive procedure and wont make him have as long of recovery period as the surgery will

  • @Sai007Anbu That requires anesthesia and may cause infection. Better to operate

  • @DrGregDVM surgery can also cause infection and a long recovery time my cats tho had the surgery and they r fine and ppl have to remember that getting a pet fixed may not cure aggression issues

  • @Sai007Anbu True not a guarantee for agression. Usually tones them down a bit. Minor infection can occur but complications are rare

  • @DrGregDVM i hate it when ppl use it for aggression i just use it for my cats to not reproduce as for aggression i use psychology and time most aggression is triggered cuz people fail to read the body language of cats and dog

  • @Sai007Anbu Most people won't take responsibility like you do for your pets and we can't have zillions of loose pets running around

  • @DrGregDVM no we can't and it's not nice to dump your pet at a kennel I say that cuz I'm on vacation and left my cat home for a week but she is fine cuz I set up the auto feeder and auto waterer scooped her litter and changed it left some catnip out and put a few toys out and groomed her we have someone coming to the house who has cats to watch her tho I just don't like kennels I say to ppl of u can't take your pet with u then find someone who can look after it while u r gone

  • whoaaa this doc is soo happy...

  • @COCONUTB00BS I really love my job!

  • my dog gotta get his man hood gone. do you recommend classic or laser

  • @UnstoppableLuck I have not used laser, the blade has worked well. The healing is faster with a laser, but the real problem is when they lick the incision raw. Either way some dogs need a cone.

  • My puppy will be getting his procedure done in about two weeks, do all neutering places shave your pups? Or do I have to go get him shaved and clean before?

  • @ShivaWings All vets shave and prep the area right before the surgery. You just bring in your pup. Be sure to fast him from 6pm the night before.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh okay fasting at 6PM, thank you for your fast response! :) Is it better to start his fast early? A friend of mine said they had their pup fasting at midnight.

  • it's kinda creepy how enthusiastic he is in this video lol

  • @bornaleo86 I enjoy my work and making videos

  • @DrGregDVM I understand that you enjoy your job and that's awesome. I want to someday be a vet tech.

I was a little bit disappointed that you ended your video before you actually performed the surgery.

  • @bornaleo86 Check out the many surgical videos on my channel, including the castration video

  • lol i just love his tounge at 1:36

  • @justxboredx3 prince is very relaxed and doesn't know it is sticking out!

  • Prince is so brave! :) What a good boy!

  • @31operafan he was very accepting and sweet

  • @31operafan poor dog eh

  • why would you do that to an animal how would you like to get your nuts cut off!

  • @roberto97c I do not need that surgery because I don't hump everything, mark the house with my urine, run after and impregnate any woman I see, or fight every other male human I see. We have to take care of the wolves we domesticated

  • @DrGregDVM isn't it also very easy for their testicles, or for females, their uterus to be easily affected by cancer and other diseases... I'm just very curious about this...

  • @HausOfCatsNew research shows early castration at less than a year old may increase the risk of bone and spleen tumors, and not castrating may increase the risk of prostate and mammary tumors. I am advising clients to neuter later than earlier(close to a year old)

  • @DrGregDVM O.O looks like i might need the surgery.....

  • @roberto97c theres nothing wrong with it. You normally do it so they can't get a female pregnant. It's just like some men get a cord or something cut in their penis so that no sperm is released when they ejaculate. I have a dog that is neutered and he doesn't care.

  • aww poor puppy

  • Hey Dr. Greg, I'm going to adopt a male rat in a couple of months and he's not neutered although I would like him to be. First of all, can male rats be neutered and if so, how? (they're so tiny). Also, out of curiosity, can female rats be spayed?

  • @sweeetsxoxo Rats can be spayed and neutered, They have a tendency to want to chew their sutures. I usually use subcutaneous sutures in rats guinea pigs and rabbits to reduce temptation to chew. It is a small surgery site, good for hand eye coordination practice

  • hey doc, how expensive is this surgery? I'm getting a puppy late june or early july. also, how long should I wait before I spay/neuter my dog (not sure if i'm getting a male or female yet.)

  • @sociopathpsych depending on the clinic... neuter clinic, small town, bigger city... it can run from 100-300 dollars. If the dog is nice and not too humpy or aggressive I usually wait till they are 4-6 months old. That gives them time to mature with the normal hormones they were born with

  • @DrGregDVM thanks a lot dr. greg! 1 more question if you don't mind, how long after the surgery before I take my dog home?

  • @sociopathpsych Sorry missed your post , but dogs are usually ready to go home in 6 hours...how did it go?

  • @DrGregDVM i swear he was kind of pissed at me for taking his manhood. I mean... doghood. but i bought him a toy and he got over it. he's fine :)

  • They feel slight pain for three to four days, but sometimes are swollen for two to three weeks

  • @DrGregDVM what is the medical term for neutering

  • Hi Dr. Greg! What was the preanesthetic drug that you used as sedative? Also, that monitor for oxygen and heart rate is so cool. I'm a veterinary student here in University of the Philippines. This semester our practical laboratory exam for the Surgery1 class is spaying and neutering a dog or cat. I'm glad your have this video up coz for sure it'll help me with my surgery exam. :) Thank you.

  • We use buprenorphine and ace for pre anesthetic or ace/ torb. That monitor is cool and comforting when I glance up at it during surgery

  • @DrGregDVM

I'm so psyched! Our orchiectomy procedure is on Monday already and I am the surgeon! Right now I'm writing the protocol. Our professor wants us to do the 2-incision open type castration. Any tips?

  • Don't be afraid to make the cut, and stretch out the cord and wipe it with gauze so it is nice clean and visible

  • @DrGregDVM

omg! I panicked! The first incision was the worst part of it. I was so careful and gentle that I only incised the dermis, I didn't even get through the fascia. But I did both open and closed type. The closed type was faster.

  • thank you for putting up this video :)

    i neutered my dog yesterday

  • aw dr. greg:(

  • Thank you for both parts. You show the dogs castration professionally, I mean the way of taking pics and manually it was really GOOD.
