I had kinda the same problem.... only it happened at a higher RPM, kinda sounded like the engine was crackling... Took it into chevy dealership and they took it apart and said the cylinder sleeve came loose and the engine was fucked! So the replace the engine and it still does it... So if you find out y urs is doing that please let me know. Also do you have the stage 2 in it???
That't not an engine problem bro.... you got yourself a diesel cobalt right there!!! LOL... jk.... was thinking about getting me a cobalt ss... but after seing this and other videos....im not to sure about it anymore
@guarinox Hey. Your feelings to be hesitant to purchase a cobalt ss due to this video is very understanding. but if you were to look at the "turbo" ss cobalt. this problem cannot occur. GM has made some "minor" efforts to avoid this type of thing from happening on the newer designs.
U know why gm covers up their engines? So you have to pay more money for them to do the labor to take off those plastic panels. Took 2,000$ to replace engine mounts because of " labor "
@MicroOrginisum well the cobalt ss doesn't come with engine covers. And saying that gm covers there engines? every car has an engine cover now-a-days no matter what company.
@MicroOrginisum dude i own this car. trust me there is no engine cover accept for a small plastic piece over the fuel rail the says supercharged on it. all of the other models have it but not the supercharged or turbocharged version. And you clearly see it in this vid there isn't an engine cover.
I have the same problem at idle, but goes away when i rev! I have also brought it to the dealer, and they cant duplicate the problem!FUCKERS!!!! I hate dealerships.
@soundwave132 The absolute main reason why it took over 8 months for them to get this done under warranty. all it took was me hearing it, then gunning it over 200km/h " at a safe place of course" and she didnt stop making the noise ever again! boom to the dealership and wala " i guess there is something wrong" idiots
@frozenassets97 it was pretty embarrassing at times. especially when sitting at a light. i remember it would piss me off. But now i dont drive it anymore so i dont have to worry about it
@frozenassets97 montana is based on a push rod assembly, i believe it just an issue with clearance and needs adjustment. but i am just shooting that out of my arse! no offence but anything 3.1, 3.4L from gm is just garbage
Ok i have this issue but it doesn't always sound like this, when you had this problem was it consistantely making this noise? cuz mine does it at idle only sometimes after driving it for a bit and then it goes away.
@bettermaxim Thats pretty much the issue. this is like i said before, caused by a timing chain tensioner failure under high amount of pressure in the system
@zipo1200 Now i have to figure a way to convince them that this is the problem and that there is a problem cuz everytime i bring it in the the dealer it doesn't make the npoise anymore.
your kidden right?. a 2.4 na ss will probably be a challenge. If you can beat a S197 mustang gt... then ok. but stop talking shit out of your ass. its a damn truck. not a sports car, thats your first mistake with a responce like that
@jetman1979 really ? I actually raced one my buddy owns one.. there slow as fuck.. from the dig after about 50metres I was already about 5 car lengths ahead.
@bettermaxim anything from a dig with a 4 cyl.. your never going to win. the problem with the sc/ss cobalts is the wheel hop and wheel torque causing a large amount of friction loss " tire slipping" Your conclusion its slow from a dig is valid, but only in the form if your talking about fwd vehicles and power weight transfer. Now from a roll, the sudden friction loss isnt there due to the less torque it needs to accelerate!
@bettermaxim This has been seen with numerous races with RWD mustang gt's where a cobalt ss/sc can easily keep up and pass " under excessive speed" due to the boosted application. I have a mustang gt and "had" a cobalt ss/sc. so i can tell the story on both worlds. Before saying anything is slow. you should consider the fact that not every car is the same and everything can put up a good fight in different situations, speed and acceleration.
You know what for all you cry baby bitches out there IF YOU DONT LIKE COBALTS DONT WATCH THE VIDEOS THEN. i dont like a lot of cars so i dont watch the videos. i personally own a cobalt ss sc and i smoke the shit out of hondas ALL DAY. so if your brother or uncle of sister or whoever has a honda wants to race a cobalt ss sc im in colorado so post a message on here and ill give you directions to come to me otherwise dont leave stupid ass messages
@redthunder2006 The honda motor itself is impressive engineering, that is of course if it it was actually honda that created v-tec to begin with... which they didnt and improved on the older design they purchased. regardless the honda motor has little torque at low rpms. Not having any type of vvt hurts these motors starting performance. At high rpms though, having the ability to get much more of an aggressive cam curve can be very beneficial. With that said. a "light weight" honda can
Respond to this video... can very well beat almost anything with an agressive cam profile... but this is NOT done by factory. Saying you walk on hondas all day... is very plausible. but if you were to go against a supercharged rsx-type s..... prepare yourself for a challenge since your vvt is NOT aggressive enough at higher rpms. happy debating =)
ahh dude the same shit happen to my cobalt.. that shit sucks. That was your catalytic converter that broke huh dude? That happen to me and i took it to the dealer cause I still had warrant, and the dealer bust it out with some bs that they voided the warranty because of my modify exhaust. What have u done about that problem? What I did was take out the cat off and just cut the part that was broken and weld a new piece 2 it for now. Cause the original Cat is expensive.
This was taken care of with the dealer. i think i explained it in my previous posts. but the back pressure killed the timing chain tensioners and broke one clean off. the head was damaged due to this issue. i fought like mad to get it under warranty. tried to get me on the intake...good luck ;)
Chevy colbalts are nothing special. An SS would not survive in the long run. My friend owns a colbat 2007 SS and it has 87kms on it. He told me there pieces of shit and didn't last long. Man my civic is better in quailty and drivetrain. Hands down it wins in mpg. And WTF the car dosn't look good from any angle :( aleast GM could of done was give it a refresh and come out with a new model. Better resale vaule :) Hondas are in there own league. Dont fight it, just fight that clutch in ur car.
Wow, cause my friend has a civic and he said its a slow piece of garbage and they don't last long. My Cobalt has a better drive train, plus the civic looks bad from any angle, it looks like a squashed bug.
@Reggie074 Hello! i am not bashing you in any way whats so ever.i actually would like to compliment on how you mention honda engines are built to last....this is true =) how ever...when it comes to the full drivetran assembly, there transmissions lack greatly in there syncro's. this is an engineering flaw with most hondas even to date =)
@Reggie074 haha k honda engines are built pretty solid but again the tranny and drivetrain in these cars are terrible and don't last long at all. you get pros and cons in both cars. if you want something fast and reliable get an ss. if you want something not so fast but will keep its value and are planning on selling in the future get a honda
and have you compared the price of the mid engine mounted rsx with a ffw cobalt? for the money you cant beat what chevy has..not everyone has rich parents to buy them anything they want..so stop hating on people who buy a lower retail vehicle and still run high 12's and low 13's in the quarter..especially when its a fucking front wheel drive thats hard as hell to launch
your civic si makes less torque than my cobalt ls stock...thats shitty..without turning 8 grand it wouldnt make any power..try shifting out at 6500 and i promise any cobalt will put it on yo ass..and i wouldnt waste my time racing an ss if i were you..he'll have himself a new set of civic doors after he blows them off your car
whats it comes down to is offline and high end power. honda engines just dont have the torque no matter if its the ka24. These things are too torquey but thats all about drivers skills. an ss will take a stock honda anyday. but when it comes lightweight and modded... well if thats what you have to do ;)
Try passing your si?? That is funny, they have no torque! My SS/SC is putting down 250 horse and 215 torque. I am running with Mustangs, so while I am competing with the v8's I'll try to catch a glimpse of you in my side-view mirror if i can still see you from all the way up here. All kinds of videos here of Cobalt kicking ass, so lets see your video of an SI beating a cobalt??? Pretty big words for a guy who has nothing to back it up with.
Now WTF is this? i mean this is a video to show a problem and you start comming on here talking about a rsx turbo. WELL NO SHIT ITS FAST. AND YOU HAVE NO CLUE HOW A SUPERCHARGER OR A TURBO WORKS!!!. if u did, u would know why the rsx is more powerful with less psi with a turbo. ur mixing a high compression car that is tuned, now forced induction, and probably runs a higher octane to achieve it horsepower. The new turbo cobalt is none of that. i will post more
The new cobalt are faster and are very well made. the direct port injection allows tuners to have more choices and seeing that all u need is a tune, exhuast, and piping. the new cobalts push past 300hp without a inch. lets see ur rsx type s push past 300hp without lower compression on the track against a nls cobalt and watch you blow it up becuase u got trigger happy on the nos when it passed u, noob. anyone with respect towards tuneing a 4 banger would know that there are differences on engines
omg. AGAIN with ur brother has this ur brother has that. u talk a lot of shit i have seen ur replies many u tube videos. r u that fucking deprived that u feel better telling people that there cars are shit? get a life. and do your math, because i did. u cant get 350hp @ 10 psi on a 11./1 compression engine without knocking a piston right out you can push give or take 280-90hp. Your a dumbshit that know dick about anything to do with forced induction. do everyone a favor and STFU
Mustang mike. i think you are a what we call " a fan boy" NOW LISTEN. i DONT like shit comments on my videos. do that somewhere else. if u have read, this was do to a bad cat, which forced backpressure and stressed out the Chain tensioner. I HAVE A FOCUS, i like it. BUT it doesnt nearly have the power of the ecotec engine. u can say gm all u want, this is european made and holds world records for it. After the problem was solved i couldnt have been happier with my cobalt. post on streetfire noob
lol. focuses are gay and people who think they are cool cars to race are gay. Mine as well be in a neon, or a fucking civic. Plus, "racing a focus is like being in the special olympics. Even if you win, your still retarded"
Mine still does this, usual when i start it up for the first time and drive hard with it right away and then stop at a red light or anywhere where its at idle it will start making that noise, at least i think thats the noise it makes... its something f8cked up like that.
when the cat got broke. the engines manifold pressure out a lot of tension on the valve tran. this cuased the timing tensioners bolt to break and cause the chain to go loose. i took that video in feb and there only starting to fix it now.
I am guessing that this might be a common problem cause my cobalt SS is doing the same. But does it have to be making the noise when you take it in for them to fix it. I plan on just taking my car up there and have them pull up this vid and all of the posts!
Yeah, my 98 Spec Type R B18C-5 had an igniter problem in 2008 and my Timing belt tensioner broke in 2009. 11 years on a 9,000 rpm engine. I suspect 70,000 miles or so. Lucky for me the tensioner failed at start up. So I took the opportunity to upgrade the Cam gears.
Then just reciently my Syncros started to fail at about 7,500rpms. Getting thoes guys replaced AND adding a light weight flywheel.
11 years and you got to do certain maintenance on these Type R's. Hows your Cobalt holding up?
Wow. congrats on the B18. honda engines are very well designed. and i am not sure but i think that your engine could be non interference so if your timing built did go, then your good :D. but don't quote me on that. Manual transmission rebuilds are great fun and very well knowledgeable. you just have do it a couple times before you get used to it!. The Cobalt is holding up stronge after its tensioner replacement. i am very well pleased. thanks for asking
im a tech at a chevy dealer, weve gotten two diffrent bolts with the same problem, and both were pumping 87, high compression ingines need 91 or higher, the engine will ping, and loose compression
i appreciate your advice but some of us guys are mechanics ourselves and actually know what they buy :D! this is with 91 octane at all times and i mean top tear gas! this i believe accord when i had a bad cat and got extremely high back pressure. i talked the service guys and they said "nah, that wouldnt hurt anything" i called bs!!! becuase with every amount of force, there is always something effect. in this case it could have strained the timing tensioner. this of course is still depatable
ya mine also makes that noise from time to time and i also have an 07 ss/sc.. It is starting to occur more frequently now.. The only problem now is to get it to make that noise when i bring it into the dealer..
i am still trying to get the head foreman to solve this problem. of course since its under warranty, they dont want to spend the 8 hours it takes to fix it.....but hopefully theyt will soon. it does it everyday now. the best time i notice it is when the engine is still cold and you take it on the highway and have it idle after.....everytime :p. i'll keep you guys posted
Problem Fixed.. the Supercharger's Couplers are done.. go back at GM and tell them that.. and they have no choice to fix them or replace your supercharger..!
it happended to a friend of mine.. and i think mine will do it too soon.. and we both have 07's..!
really?? Shit man i think thats what is wrong with my car becuase it was doinbg it once in a while and now it is doing it more and more, only at idle.. I'll bring it in but i hate doin this becuase i will bring it in and it won't make the noise.
thats exactly what happens! i took her to jasper and back and got her back to edmonton she wouldnt shut up. maybe you have to take her for a good drive ;)
thanks for you comments guys. by law, any aftermarket part that is installed in your car cannot void the warrenty enless proven that that part, caused a failure. yeah i run 91 in her all the time. i cna get her to do it some days. but then it goes away on others!!!.
i would think it is your timing chain tensioner. i would have that checked out but thats what i think it is.

You probably don't have the SVT version, that engine has power Cobalts are on like 12PSI and only get 260HP, what a peice of shit
mustangmikeca 3 years ago
lol. focuses are gay and people who think they are cool cars to race are gay. Mine as well be in a neon, or a fucking civic. Plus, "racing a focus is like being in the special olympics. Even if you win, your still retarded"
finchster013 2 years ago
yeah Cobalts are so good they are in a class of their own...lol cheap, low resale pieces of shit
mustangmikeca 2 years ago
awesome come back fag. maybe you should "focus" harder next time your trying to think of something witty. ha! And try to make sense next time too

Mine still does this, usual when i start it up for the first time and drive hard with it right away and then stop at a red light or anywhere where its at idle it will start making that noise, at least i think thats the noise it makes... its something f8cked up like that.

ok guys. this porblem has been solved! yay!
when the cat got broke. the engines manifold pressure out a lot of tension on the valve tran. this cuased the timing tensioners bolt to break and cause the chain to go loose. i took that video in feb and there only starting to fix it now.
zipo1200 3 years ago

McGeeRF 3 years ago
Wow. congrats on the B18. honda engines are very well designed. and i am not sure but i think that your engine could be non interference so if your timing built did go, then your good :D. but don't quote me on that. Manual transmission rebuilds are great fun and very well knowledgeable. you just have do it a couple times before you get used to it!. The Cobalt is holding up stronge after its tensioner replacement. i am very well pleased. thanks for asking

that sounds like your pumping 87 oct. fuel.
im a tech at a chevy dealer, weve gotten two diffrent bolts with the same problem, and both were pumping 87, high compression ingines need 91 or higher, the engine will ping, and loose compression
UCRACING1 3 years ago
i appreciate your advice but some of us guys are mechanics ourselves and actually know what they buy :D! this is with 91 octane at all times and i mean top tear gas! this i believe accord when i had a bad cat and got extremely high back pressure. i talked the service guys and they said "nah, that wouldnt hurt anything" i called bs!!! becuase with every amount of force, there is always something effect. in this case it could have strained the timing tensioner. this of course is still depatable
zipo1200 3 years ago
mine sounds like that once in a while at idle and i always put either 91 or 94 in it... so i don't know if it is this or something else.
bettermaxim 3 years ago
ya mine also makes that noise from time to time and i also have an 07 ss/sc.. It is starting to occur more frequently now.. The only problem now is to get it to make that noise when i bring it into the dealer..
bettermaxim 3 years ago
i am still trying to get the head foreman to solve this problem. of course since its under warranty, they dont want to spend the 8 hours it takes to fix it.....but hopefully theyt will soon. it does it everyday now. the best time i notice it is when the engine is still cold and you take it on the highway and have it idle after.....everytime :p. i'll keep you guys posted

Problem Fixed.. the Supercharger's Couplers are done.. go back at GM and tell them that.. and they have no choice to fix them or replace your supercharger..!
it happended to a friend of mine.. and i think mine will do it too soon.. and we both have 07's..!
r0k088 3 years ago
really?? Shit man i think thats what is wrong with my car becuase it was doinbg it once in a while and now it is doing it more and more, only at idle.. I'll bring it in but i hate doin this becuase i will bring it in and it won't make the noise.

thats exactly what happens! i took her to jasper and back and got her back to edmonton she wouldnt shut up. maybe you have to take her for a good drive ;)
zipo1200 3 years ago
lol, fortunately my problem wasnt the supercharger
zipo1200 3 years ago
eh i run 93, i used to run 87 and got a little lil noise nothing big ever since 93 no more lil noise
ssmrico 3 years ago
thanks for you comments guys. by law, any aftermarket part that is installed in your car cannot void the warrenty enless proven that that part, caused a failure. yeah i run 91 in her all the time. i cna get her to do it some days. but then it goes away on others!!!.
