@trampadoo: Irons affects the silly speech impedament too, which I havent never encounterd in the books, Having watched Dance's preformance I would say he makes the best patrician, even more so than Alan Rickman would
I'm afraid, as much as a like Jeremy, that Charles Dance kind of kicked his ass here. Jeremy just acts as the patrician and not very convincingly, more like overacting a but an not taking the part serious while Dance simply was Ventinari. I remember when I first watched this I was quite disappointed because Vetinari is my favourite DW character next to Vimes and I feared he would now always play Ventinari. I nearly cried with joy when I saw how Dance played the character. :)
It is hard to live up to the books but I think most of the "movies (or what you call them" are quite ok. Always pictured Rindswind a bit younger but that might be becuse my first contact with him was in discworld 1 when Eric did his voice.
I prefer Charles Dance's portrayal, too. But Jeremy Irons (who is, imo, quite magical in any role) plays a faithful V from early DW. Charles Dance plays a faithful later V. I agonise over who'd I prefer... JI (who seems to physically fit V like a delicious, edible glove) but who pronounces his 'r's; or the dashing CD who seems able to reek refinement and pulls off a strange, unnecessarily double breasted smock with more aplomb than any man ought to have a right to..?
I am very much in love with Jeremy Irons as the Patrician. Hes almost exactly what I imagined him when reading the books and I was very disappointed that they casted Charlie Dance for Going Postal instead. BUT after watching Going Postal, I changed my opinion because Mr. Dance was good as well, even if he didnt fit all that properly looks wise. They are both very good choices, however Lord Havelock will always be Jeremy Irons in my mind.
Always picture Rincewind as a young guy, atleast no more then 30. And the Patrician should have have little or no emotion in his voice and shouldent have moved about very much.
@Falstad007 I rather liked Jeremy Irons' voice, it was very intimidating. Just the way he says "Don't let me detain you". But Charles Dance had the personality down so incredibly well. His deadpan and sarcastic humor was exactly how I'd imagine Vetinari to have acted like.
@Falstad007: I think haircolour and being less skinny than Irons is the last thing that matters. After seeing a couple of seconds of Dance's acting I definitely didn't give a heck about his haircolour anymore. ^_^ It's not only the voice, it's the subtle acting, the manerisms. Frankly, I think Irons overacts too often and Dance is simply a better actor for a part that absolutely lives though subtility, little changes of facial expressions and in his voice.
I never liked the casting of rincewind in this movie; i always pictured him as you would a man who had been stuck on a desert island (thin with a beard and an constant look of desparation), but that's just what happens when books get turned into movies... aside from that, this was a good movie overall :)
@balkoth1984 Keep in mind what magic can do to one... Besides, I think the movie verses are/can be/might be those that were or were not created additionally when the sorting machine was hit with a crowbar (or what it was again. It was hit, that's important)...
Actually, I guess not. Although I can't underline this with one or several page references (because I read the books in German). Even the Discworld Wiki lacks certainty in this affair. @DeadlyInAShadow wuffles was Lord Vetinari's little dog..sadly Wuffles passed away a few years ago.. he is burried in the gardens of the palace..every thuseday Lord Ventinari places a dog biscuit on his grave...(but never a yellow one as wuffles did not like them)
happerly Wuffles has since been replaced by the chairman(or should that be chairdog) who just happends to owe the royal bank of Anke-Morpork..(see making money)

Obviously a lot depends on the director in a situation like this. Actors may be vastly talented, but they're only human beings...some of whom need strong direction. Tsk, tsk.
@GuinnevereB eugh......... why did you have to say chewed up the scenery? i was listening and agreeing and as soon as you said that i got the bear blow job image in my mind
I prefered Dance in going postal. Irons is playing Vetinari to comic and playful he's not scary, cold or powerful enough here for vetinari. Dance did a much better job and yes i do love Irons but Dance played him more as i saw Vetinari.
Someone may already have said this, but for everyone who hates Vetinari's accent here, it's actually a common British school-boy "accent" (which would make sense, considering he was educated in the Assassin's Guild - presumably most of the lads there would speak like that, at least for awhile). Although, after reading how he was portrayed in Night Watch, he probably wouldn't have taken it up. So it works AND it doesn't work, depending on how picky you want to get.
He really looks the part of Vetinari, but I have to agree that the lisp really doesn't work. And I also agree that they make Rincewind out to be far much older then he was in the books. The early books really aren't my favorites though as he introduced so many things in them that the later just seemed to pretend never happened
Having seen Stephen Briggs magnificent performance as the Patrician, this can only ever be a pale echo of the character. Briggs makes him sound... more or less disappointed that no one is ever a proper challenge to him.
'The Colour of Magic' being the first Discworld book, I think a lot of the characters were refined in later books. For example, Pratchett has said himself that the Archchancellor in TCOM (I forget his name) was really just a forerunner version of Ridcully personalitywise, who has been kept there since I do remember this book saying that Vetinari had a lisp or something, but in books later I think it was just convieniently forgotten. Either that, or everyone is too scared to point it out :P
To be fair, he gets his limp from an injury he receives in Men at Arms (shot by the Gonne) and after that he has a cane and limps. Other than that, this is more or less how I imagined Vetinari, apart from I always thought he'd sound like Rowan Atkinson ala Blackadder.
Right. He seems to mutter. When reading the books I always imagined his voice to be clear, measured, and calculating. I think the casting here is perfect, they just should of had him to speak clearly and a bit louder would have helped tons.
Rincewind in the books is noted for having survived numerous brushes with Death(who gets very annoyed about that), and most wizards other than Ponder Stibbons(Harry Potter is a complete ripoff of his look) are portrayed as about 50-60ish. So what's the problem?
that dog looks dead, but in the credits you can see they actually used a real dog...
I want to see a discworld film with the going-under-water-while-breathing-safely boat. (i.e. the submarine by leonard of Quirm...) now THAT would be awesome.
Vetinari needs some black hair dye, and for some reason he sounds like he has a cold...but as Lexagon mentioned, could be absolutely perfect if both were remedied.
I think in one book it's mentioned that he's about thirty-ish... And I think he works better as a scruffy, rodent-like middle-aged man than a whiteheaded gramps.
no, but he's probably the fastest running man on the disc, a "champion sprinter" as terry put it, i wouldn't attribute that to a geezer :p. See the Discworld games for the PERFECT Rincewind, in look and voice. Thats how i always invision my Rincewind when i read him.
Actually that age and look is about right for Rincewind from the books, but your right, I thought it was way WAY too old at first too. It just doesnt match what I picture for him though, I blame the video game series for that. Seems like the popular conception for his appearance tends to come from those.
I think the only clue we get from tCoM is the line "Some might have taken him for a mere apprentice enchanter" which hints that he might be more young-ish, and Trymon's comments that indicate that he and Rincewind were students together (but we don't know HIS exact age either). He is probably younger than Ridcully, Vimes and Vetinari (who are roughly the same age) but, yeah, there is nothing explicit said about why he should be in his 20s/30s during tCoM (which is how I imagine him too).
Aye didnt really take that into account, that line from tCoM but I see your point. Wife thought he was too old too, but she is a huge Disc fan and pretty soon she had forgotten all about that and was full on into the movie.
They had Wuffles in it though, so its awesome no matter what. Shaquille O' Neil coulda been Rincewind and Wuffles would have made it all ok.
i imagined rincewind to be mid twenties a bit chubby n look nothin like that from the description in the books!!! vetinari's not bad tho, still nothin compared to the books- these were just made for lazy people
well you can get it in the US or Canada in July 14 but The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on the 3rd November 2008. it didn't say where though.
@Andreazor Yeah, the lisp is really annoying. Even though Color of Magic would have a Patrician who has a lisp (don't remember, it's been awhile since I've read it), I distinctly recall the Patrician of the book also being fat and eating jellied starfish, neither of which fit Vetinari's description. Vetinari came into the picture around Sourcery, and nowhere in the books is it mentioned that he, specifically, has a speech defect.
@lexagon exactly he would never be that, i dunno, careless! jeremy irons seemed sooo perfect for it :( he does say "dont let me detain you" just.. perfickly though :D
@lexagon He's got a lisp. Always has had. However, like many voice complications it can be corrected by doing exercises which Irons did for the majority of his career.
@mylodude young for a wizard which he is compared to the others at the faculty. Remember he is at UU for some 40 Years. So he would be about 60 i'd say.
my complaint is that hes meant to be a tall skinny wizzard, although david jason is wonderful as rincewind, one of the few good decisions ive seen in the pratchett adaptations
@bobbiwib I must be harking back to the old Discowrld games but I always saw Eric Idle as Rincewind. I didn't care much for David Jason as the part but he did play Albert perfectly. Someone once said to me that they thought Russ Abbot would make a good Rincewind. I dismissed the idea but having thought about it since, they might not be far off.
Yes, but Rincewind is never actually explicitly given an age, and in The Light Fantastic it is said that the lord of the city had a widow's peak, he is not named Vetinari as such, but then again, how do you know all this stuff about Rincewind being meant to be young? To my reader eye he was oh, about 20ish, now 40ish after 20 years of adventure. Younger than Pratchett anyway, so I agree. But then again, why bother with annoying TV films at all. Going Postal was awful too.
Yay Jeremy Irons as the Patrician! But, argh the voice the voice! :( not to mention why are his robes expensive? they should be dusty black! But otherwise great!
I always wanted Jeremy Irons as the Patrician. I think his vocal and physical features match the description very well, and Irons definitely can carry Vetinari's severity and off putting features.
As I understand it Rickman was the first choice for the Patrician (I hear him when reading the novels) but he was tied up with Harry Potter. According to what I heard it was Rickman who suggested Irons to be cast.
he looks exactly as i imagined from the books, but i prefer Nigel Planner's voice for the patrician, and steven briggs. Still fantastically done though, well cast
Appearance - very good, I must admit, but still not perfect. The voice... for Offler's sake, please tell me I've misheard! Vetinari can't speak unclearly!!!
The actor, whilst studying Ankh-Morpork's varying streets and byways in an effort to learn more about the his assigned character, was provided a welcoming customary to those who populate the aformetioned thoroughfares. Now that the bruises have finally healed, can you really cast blame at the man for his so recently slurred speech?
Let me say -- I love Lord Vetinari! One of my favorite characters of all time. Whatever actor played him has tough shoes to fill. Let's say I never would've guessed Irons. But he is decent. But he is not MY vetinari!
yeah, I think Stephen Briggs would've been a better choice as Lord Vetinari, per example. Though this actor is not bad at all! I just imagined his voice to be more frightening, that's all.
If you can do that, thank you very very much! The Color of Magic and the Light Fantastic were two of my favorite Discworld books... Rincewind is my favorite character.
Just to let you know that while I won't be uploading the whole movie, I will be loading some short clips over the next couple of days, mostly with Rincewind. I'm trying not to name them to obviously (had a couple of files pulled before), but if you search for Rincewind and/or Twoflower they should turn up. :-)

lexagon 1 year ago
@lexagon It was in one of first with Vetinari. Soon i'll be reading them again, so i tell u. :P
SuperCinemafan 1 year ago
@lexagon
You mean how he cant say R? =P
"It's the awena fow you Wincewind!"
Andreazor 1 year ago
@Andreazor Yeah, the lisp is really annoying. Even though Color of Magic would have a Patrician who has a lisp (don't remember, it's been awhile since I've read it), I distinctly recall the Patrician of the book also being fat and eating jellied starfish, neither of which fit Vetinari's description. Vetinari came into the picture around Sourcery, and nowhere in the books is it mentioned that he, specifically, has a speech defect.
lexagon 1 year ago
@lexagon exactly he would never be that, i dunno, careless! jeremy irons seemed sooo perfect for it :( he does say "dont let me detain you" just.. perfickly though :D
bobbiwib 1 year ago
@lexagon He's got a lisp. Always has had. However, like many voice complications it can be corrected by doing exercises which Irons did for the majority of his career.

and i thought veterinary had a skull cap. and rincewind is meant to be quite young
mylodude 2 years ago 33
@mylodude young for a wizard which he is copared to the others. Remember he is at UU for some 40 Years. So he would be about 60 i'd say.

@mylodude young for a wizard which he is compared to the others at the faculty. Remember he is at UU for some 40 Years. So he would be about 60 i'd say.
nith950 1 year ago
@mylodude I think he looks old enough and I can't remmeber any mention of a skull cap.
8Rincewind 1 year ago 2
@mylodude Quite young, for a wizard.
FulchesterUnited 1 year ago
@mylodude well, for a wizard
my complaint is that hes meant to be a tall skinny wizzard, although david jason is wonderful as rincewind, one of the few good decisions ive seen in the pratchett adaptations
bobbiwib 1 year ago
@bobbiwib I must be harking back to the old Discowrld games but I always saw Eric Idle as Rincewind. I didn't care much for David Jason as the part but he did play Albert perfectly. Someone once said to me that they thought Russ Abbot would make a good Rincewind. I dismissed the idea but having thought about it since, they might not be far off.
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@mylodude the actor REALLY wanted to play Rincewind, and it was to be his last play/show to act in. So they let him have the part.
Ammipeirce 1 year ago
@mylodude agreed
kerith666 1 year ago
@mylodude
Simpson654 10 months ago
@mylodude I guess he's young for a wizard?

Voice, bad. Overall look, good. Wuffles, perfect. Movie: surprisingly good and true to the idea, even if the bits can be odd sometimes.
kerevon 2 years ago 2
Really? I thought the voice was pretty good.
xNeverthought 2 years ago
I think it's a nod to Pratchett, who talks like that in a less threatening sort of way.
LordMoriya 2 years ago 2
Why do they always mess up the voices? First Teatime's weird American accent, and now Irons imitating the Roman leader from Life of Brian.
Damar148 2 years ago
actually that's a very common upper class accent, albeit one that is used in comedy many times
whitesentinix 2 years ago 2
teatimes voice was just right, it sounds psychotic and upper class
mylodude 2 years ago
Yay Jeremy Irons as the Patrician! But, argh the voice the voice! :( not to mention why are his robes expensive? they should be dusty black! But otherwise great!
BowievMercury 2 years ago 2
I always wanted Jeremy Irons as the Patrician. I think his vocal and physical features match the description very well, and Irons definitely can carry Vetinari's severity and off putting features.

YAY i just wish ther was some kind of glimpse of vimes...sigh

Was it actually Vetinari in the book? I thought it was a different Patrician at first.
Nice job from Jeremy Irons, but I think Alan Rickman would OWN the part, if they could cast him.
Doctorsmashy 2 years ago 6
As I understand it Rickman was the first choice for the Patrician (I hear him when reading the novels) but he was tied up with Harry Potter. According to what I heard it was Rickman who suggested Irons to be cast.
jcolville 2 years ago 3
Bloody hell...your right.
Irons is great though. Even like the voice, but Rickman IS the patrician isn't he.
(as long as it's "with a spoon" )
lol

Jeremy Irons is so great

Gotta love Vetinari...XD
Ninjette6590 3 years ago 6
he looks exactly as i imagined from the books, but i prefer Nigel Planner's voice for the patrician, and steven briggs. Still fantastically done though, well cast
SRVRULES893 3 years ago 3
I think Irons has just the right amount of playfulness in his voice, like a cat toying with a mouse.
However I keep on expecting him to say, "As thick as you are...pay attention! My words are a matter of pride."
specialkalpha 3 years ago 4
It might just be me, but I always heard Alan Rickmans voice in my head for Vetinari.

WUFFLES!
Ghlan 3 years ago
Appearance - very good, I must admit, but still not perfect. The voice... for Offler's sake, please tell me I've misheard! Vetinari can't speak unclearly!!!
mohairwitch 3 years ago 2
The actor, whilst studying Ankh-Morpork's varying streets and byways in an effort to learn more about the his assigned character, was provided a welcoming customary to those who populate the aformetioned thoroughfares. Now that the bruises have finally healed, can you really cast blame at the man for his so recently slurred speech?
BlahBlahYouWho 3 years ago 4
Pretty good Vetinari. Not as clear spoken as I imagine him. I always imagine him a very sharp edge to a very levelled voice.
arnorparnor 3 years ago 4
vetinary was a little more frail to me. longer hair, and really smart and powerful. this guy seems just to... modern
JETPlusNDP 3 years ago 2
Omg, in one of the later books Wuffles is something like 19! ^^

I can't get over how much Jeremy Irons looks like Sean freakin' Connery in that goatee...
StandingRoom 3 years ago
Let me say -- I love Lord Vetinari! One of my favorite characters of all time. Whatever actor played him has tough shoes to fill. Let's say I never would've guessed Irons. But he is decent. But he is not MY vetinari!

"Do you think we should be merciful?" I think that was the funniest line of the entire movie.

[I thought Vetinari's voice should be a tad chillier, but that's just me.]

I agree
Ghlan 3 years ago
For some reason I imagined Vetinari's voice to be a bit more clear and sinister. Otherwise same for me.
Ansuzie 3 years ago 2
yeah, I think Stephen Briggs would've been a better choice as Lord Vetinari, per example. Though this actor is not bad at all! I just imagined his voice to be more frightening, that's all.

I can't find anyone who has uploaded the movie yet :(
CKtheFat 3 years ago
The movie is on here, actually, cut into 20 parts.
Should turn up if you search for 'Colour of Magic', if you hadn't already found it.
Fearinox 3 years ago
Has anyone uploaded the full movie like with Hogsfather?
CKtheFat 3 years ago
I don't think so... I could perhals try to do that, you know... I'll consider it seriously. ^_^
MegawackyMax 3 years ago
If you can do that, thank you very very much! The Color of Magic and the Light Fantastic were two of my favorite Discworld books... Rincewind is my favorite character.
CKtheFat 3 years ago
Just to let you know that while I won't be uploading the whole movie, I will be loading some short clips over the next couple of days, mostly with Rincewind. I'm trying not to name them to obviously (had a couple of files pulled before), but if you search for Rincewind and/or Twoflower they should turn up. :-)
