I collected NWA, Ice Cube and Ice T, Shaquille ONeal (not a "gangsta" but he was p.o.-ing people by being "bragadocious") and 2Pac, but all the bragging about shooting and pimping got tiring.
Also, early rap was "angry", full of energy and spirit.--fighting against The Man. The image of the ghetto was replaced by mansions, strip clubs, and the good life.

The controversy and the movement to ban Luke and the 2 Live Crew might have been because of sexually-related lyrics, but establishment elites were offended that they were successful by selling record numbers of rap-related albums to middle class white youths.
I bought Luke Skyywalker, The 2 Live Crew cassette a week after my 18th birthday in 1987, and continued to buy Luke/2 Live Crew related cassettes/CDs for the better part of the following decade. Suffice it to say, society did not collapse.

It was Young America's changing musical tastes in rap/hip-hop, not politicians, that caused Luke/ 2 Live Crew to fade from the consciousness in the mid-1990s.

@weitulong I got the "ha-ha" comment. The "basher" part of my screen name is derived from my real name, and the "69" refers to the year of my birth (amazing how many people use "69" in their SN's--were they born then, too? :D Not very likely.)
I was heavily into hip-hop from my mid teens till my late 20s, but, somehow, I "outgrew" it by the end of the 1990s, as it didn't seem as fresh, groundbreaking, and appealing as it was in the early days.

@weitulong I think rap/hip-hop began to lose its appeal in the late 1990s when "gangsta rap" became the most dominant form of the genre. I collected NWA, Ice Cube and Ice T, Shaquille ONeal (not a "gangsta" but he was p.o.-ing people by being "bragadocious") and 2Pac, but all the bragging about shooting and pimping got tiring.
Also, early rap was "angry", full of energy and spirit.--fighting against The Man. The image of the ghetto was replaced by mansions, strip clubs, and the good life.

@basherman69 Oh yeah. I agree. But you can still find some good hip hop (as opposed to commercial rap). If you haven't already, check out Immortal Technique. (I hope you know some Spanish though.) He's the first one to come to mind. Public Enemy is still fighting the good fight...kind of.

I remember Public Enemy, Chuck D., Flavor Flav, but they weren't heavy on my playlist. They were the bridge between the "party people" style of rap from the late 1980s and the "gangsta rap" era of the early 1990s. Lots of social commentary in their raps, as I recall. Were they the rap group that first used the term "sell-out"?
