I know this video has slowed down a bit, but its still great for newer players. One question, though: how much distance should you lose with each step? For example, if you through 400' with reach-back and an x-step, what should you throw from the pec with an x-step? how about with no step? I'm re-building my drive, and I want to make sure I'm getting this close to correct before I move on.

this video makes way more sense when taken along with other explanations of the "hit." it's really a great practice tool to help your muscle memory the way he shows the progression- working backwards from the release. I used this technique today for the first time (I've played for 2.5 years) and added significant distance to my drives- on one hole I threw past the basket- which I've never done (uphill over 330ish).

@Dynikus Good set, but I would also include a Polaris LS or a Monarch both no heavier than 172. Crazy that guys don't take weight into consideration when recommending a disc. If you are a beginner, avoid the heavy drivers. I love my Comet and have used it for 10 years, although I'm thinking about replacing it with a Buzz this year. If you like the way it flies (straight with little fade), you'll love the Polaris for drives.
@Dynikus Don't know about those particular discs, not going to pretend that they're good or bad for a beginner because honestly I've never used them. When I started out though I really liked the Innova champion Roadrunner. Not the furthest driving disc but it has excellent control, after a while you'll throw some gorgeous looking S curves. Highly recommend it for a beginner.
Good video. I still have trouble, it all happens so fast. I need more practice. When I try to grip the darn thing right, I launch it to 2'o'clock sometimes, and I've noticed, since I started gripping right, my disks take an entirely different flight path, and that takes some getting used to.
This video has transformed my backhand technique, it has taken my throw to another level and it's provided free and without ads.
I don't know if my technique will ever look as good as Dan's but I'm throwing stronger, more accurately, and more consistently as a result of this 6+ minute video. My run up and tempo are also greatly improved.
If you commit to this method, you will see results.
Just wondering if anyone has some commentary on discs. My friends and I went and bought discs today and played for the first time ever. We based our discs mostly on looks and price. I bought a Starfire Distance Driver - $8.99 My second friend got a Wraith Distance Driver - $8.99 and my last friend bought a Leopard Fairway Driver - $8.99
We didn't find out until later that his leopard was a fairway driver and ours were both distance. Any kind of input is welcome.
@ticonderoga8000 I own a few Wraiths and they are by far the best distance driver I've thrown. It took me a while to figure out how to throw it and they require a little more power if you want them to really fly. After you learn to throw them properly it becomes very fun. I don't think they are the best disc for beginners, tho. I also use a Valkyrie which is perfect for beginners just starting to play and looking for max distance. If you guys haven't picked up a putter, definitely do so.
this video is the best video on youtube to learn how to throw your disc...i watched this video probably like a month and a half ago and now i can throw 400 feet...thanks beto!
Just wanted to say that by holding the disc to your chest then releasing, you are loosing a lot of speed that you COULD have, just some advice, extend your arm all the way out and pull all the way across ( shoulder to shoulder) until your arm is once again, fully extended. Im not saying your Technique is wrong im just suggesting you may get more oomph this way. Nice video though.
@burdette899 that looked like it was just a starting position to practice the technique keeping it close to your chest, so your arm will be used to being that close to the chest through the pull through from the reach back
@burdette899 that looked like it was just a starting position to practice the technique keeping it close to your chest, so your arm will be used to being that close to the chest through the pull through from the reach back
@burdette899 When you throw with your arm extended from your chest you will create more of an anhyzer shot rather than a straight shot at times depending on your arm length.
Hi. I'm new to disc golf. Been playing for about 4 months now (although I'm not terrible- I'm not good, best was -1 for 18) and I'd like to share my current arsenal.
Forehand (>350ft)- Groove
Backhand (<350ft)- Teebird
Putter/Midrange- Roc
I'd also like responses as to what discs perform well in wind (well not terrible because no disc performs well in wind)
You ask if he wins PDGA tourneys... yes. He played in the AM worlds last month and did well, just moved up to pro. According to PDGA.com, he has now played 4 pro tourneys and got his first win July 3rd.
"Stay away from the fast stuff! Trust me - I learned this the hard way."
Wow! I found this hobby about an month ago, and have trained since few times in a week. I have been struggling with my drive. I can hammer a ~80 meter throw with my 175g Beast, but the accuracy is bad. With your tip I started to train my drive with 172g Leopard, and as result, today I managed to hammer my first ACE in Siltamäki/Helsinki/Finland track #17 (par3|50m). Disc retired, and going to get a new one. Thanks man!!
@forever1634 this is so funny you say worst technique o.k. then show me yours thats better,This technique you seem to thinks is so bad Dan uses to rip out 500+ drives
Thank you so much for posting this video. I am going to practice what you put on here. This is the best video I have seen by far to help on technique.
Thank you for the great video. I just started playing again after eleven years and forgot the everything about the throw. I have the worst stalls and found this video. I am so very thankful that someone took the time to make this for all the amature golfer's that really want to be competitive and just play.
Beato's videos are by far the best I have found--the others don't even come close. Thanks again man from Colorado, Anthony.
Dan - Just a quick comment - on your "what it looks like" you don't seem to be getting your legs under you. Your rear leg is already coming up when you pull through, which keeps you from getting the power of those legs pushing through.
It could just be that particular thow, but if its a normal thing for you try to really emphasize the push with that back leg to add more D.
Not criticism of the video or your form, you're a straight bomber and all good tips. Its just something I noticed.
i still can't translate anything i've seen here into tips i can use to help my game (i still max under 325'), but at least i have a good direction to follow.
please keep helping limp noodles like me out by posting more videos.
ive only played 3 times and this was the most helpful vid ive seen. thanks. i even had a lesson from the #5 ranked player in ND lol. goin to work on it right now!
nice vid bro.. i have an already decent throw myself (370-400ft.) but i feel as though im not encorporating my whole body like you do. I guess it all appears to be a matter of smoothness, timing, and practice of coarse lol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yea I'm pretty much giving up disc golf i've watched over 50 videos for drving technique and i've tried them all and practiced for months and i can't get a drive over 100 ft. so yea i ultimately fail
Don't give up. Have you tried different discs? How old are you? Maybe you just don't have the strength and body weight to get the disc very far. Look at the guy in the video. He's pretty big and muscular, so of course he can throw far. If you aren't very big, you just have to get as much momentum going as possible. Practice standing still first to make sure you've got your accuracy down. Then begin to make run-ups, and maybe a little bit of a spin.
That's not entirely true, weight and muscle have little to do with distance. At our local course, there's 2 kids, 12 & 14 years old who play, both are short and skinny yet both can blast a 350'+ drive at any given time. It's all about technique. ANYONE can learn to throw far. Practice makes improvements.
I meant for a beginner it does. If you don't have the weight and muscle to throw far naturally, then you're going to have to work at it. If he's a beginner, and small, that may explain why he can't throw far. That's why i told him he has to get some momentum going. He can't just stand there and expect the disc to take off by itself.
I'm having such a difficult time shifting my weight to my front foot. I can consistently throw about 350' with my weight evenly distributed, but I feel so awkward and don't seem to get any power with my weight over my front plant foot. Are there any drills I could practice to learn to generate power off of my plant foot? Like balance drills or something?
I can't wait to try out these tips tomorrow. On sunday I found a sun-faded Champion Eagle at my local course (unmarked) and the next day I found a brand new Champion Beast (also unmarked) on the same hole. I've only been playing 6 weeks so I really need the technique to handle those monsters :]
I've been playing for a few months now. I don't really have any good amateurs or pros that will show me anything, so I've been self-teaching. I've gone through trial and error with a bunch of different videos, tutorials, etc. and this is by far the best video. If you follow these instructions step by step, and don't skip ahead you will add distance to whatever your best drive is now. I was maxing out at about 250'-300' before, now I'm creeping on about 400'. Thank you very much for posting this.
If you are being consistent then yes, that's pretty damn good. Accuracy over distant any day. It's good to be able to throw really far, but if you're getting 250-300 ft. and making it consistently, you're doing nice. =]
This video was very useful. Because before, my throws would go really high, and look good, but then they would hook bad at the end. I picked up all the discs you recomended, now I have to try them out.
which disc would someone recomend for a beginning driver? I just started and i realized i suck at the initial throw, so i am looking for a good driver, but i need a good one.
Actually, keep throwing the leopard (stable to understable) and pick up a Valkyrie for max distance. You should be able to throw most lines with those two.
@joeveenpresents - I have to disagree on the Firebird. That's a hard disc for beginners. I would stick to the Valk and the Leopard starting out. AND STICK TO THOSE TWO! Don't run out and buy a bunch of discs. That was a lesson I learned... Use the Teebird for windy days.
@joeveenpresents You are correct. I started with a given disc a Star Xcal that I throw forearm, but after watching this I went outside grabbed my Roc and practiced that form static just focusing on the form displayed and I threw it at 75% far longer than I could throw it earlier today 100% power with a run-up. Now I have 2 fast discs(c destroyer, s xcal) I'm wondering if I can even throw.
@sh1yne I just realized the complete flaw in my game after practicing this. Now I have 2 discs I was using to compensate for my lack of technique. Just doing the first motions and simplest form I took a horrendous back hand and added more control and distance using less effort with a midrange then I had with my drivers. I was using them forehand to mask my lack of technique.
@joeveenpresents thanks, that actually helped me. I got a firebird and valkrie. Waitin on the t-bird. There is one hole at my local that demands a straight long throw followed by a sharp fade, the firebird fits the bill perfectly. Also, the valkyrie is consitently my longest disk when throwing in the field. When I switch to side arm, it often ends in a roll for even more distance.
@bedfordxc I've been play for 4 years now so you cant take my advice or leave it but i started out throwing a dx beast which is a easy disc to throw also another disc ive been really liking that is easy to throw is a destroyer i have a star and pro they are very nice. but overall just try lots of things even if its just maybe your friends disc use it for a round and see how you like it.
Great Vid, but would have loved to seen some disc flight. I believe you throw well, but no one takes golf lessons from a guy you have never actually seen the flight of his ball or where it landed. Just a constructive suggestion! Thank you though for the vid, it may help me.
I've applied this method in the last couple of weeks and have already improved both my accuracy and distance. I am now throwing my midranges as far as I had been throwing my drivers, which has vastly improved my accuracy and helped to lower my scores!
Thank you for posting this vid. I hit a plateau of a little over 300 feet a couple of years ago. Hopefully with this vid and some pracice i can get past that. It would be great if you put a vid about sidearm technique up. Do you throw sidearm at all?
I really like the video, I'm gonna go and try some of these techniques in my next game. The only thing I didn't like was the fact we never got to see where the disc went haha. I'm sure it was right on course though.
I am actually starting to think about making a DVD and re-making these little videos and put it all on one DVD and sell it. The reason for making these videos was to help others through their hard times and hopefully everyone can learn this game properly and get better. I never thought about the money when i was shooting these videos.
Dan you are the man! This is the best Tips/Technique video I've found. Better than Discrafts even. I tell all the people I introduce to the sport to watch it.
Oh and I would say one more thing that might help people keep the disc down a bit (helps me) is to start up above the shoulder with the wind-up and flatten out as you go into the punch... basically it should feel like you are about to throw it into the ground, but you should auto-adjust to flatten it out. I know some people have trouble doing this, but it works very well for me.
I had almost given up on backhand and become a totally forehand driver since i could get about double the distance out of the forehand drives, but now I am enthusiastic about getting out and trying a round with mostly backhand and seeing how I do.
I want to become good with both backhand and forehand.
Also, do you forehand drive well enough to do a video on it? 'Cause I am always looking for tips to improve my forehand drive as well.
Hey man, just revisted your video because I had gotten very sloppy with my mechanics and needed a little refresher course, and then went out today and spent about a half hour just driving with my four DDs (DX Valkerie (167), DX Beast (168), DX Orc (150), and Champion Orc (175)). I went from barely over 100 feet to what I estimate to being between 150-200 feet per drive.
I basically stopped doing a full run-up and focused on the wind-up and whip in this video.
Just wanted to drop my 2 cents in. Thanks for posting this video. I needed something that would help me with my technique and power and this is exactly what I was looking for, 5 stars :)
I want to say thank you. With your video I have went from 250' atmost on a drive to over 300'. I will continue to keep using this technic as it has worked wonders for me. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Good point, compressing the arm before the snap. But this seems to be a bit misleading the way you break it down; it glazes over the importance of the full arm —from the shoulder, out— whip motion used to create inertia before engaging your elbow.
Believe it or not, there are people (like me) that can't work out the finer steps involved in form. A video like this really helps the noobs like me that could never put this together on their own.
Thank you so much for posting this. I putt fine, but my driving sucks. I am 6'3 and I can only throw 270ft on a good day. After watching this video, I see I have alot to learn. I hope to break the 300ft mark this year.
great video, i've been working on the steps and I am seeing some real improvement. I am 6'5 and I have really long arms so it has taken me some time to adjust my technique, but it's coming along very nicely. I can say for sure my short/mid game is much further along than my driving.
Hey, I am still not getting much distance off of my Distance Driver (I know more will come with time), and I was wondering if you think the archangel might give me even more distance than the Valkyrie... what do you think?
stick with your valkyrie, the archangel would be alright for you, but the valkyrie is a faster disc so you will get more distance out of it. i would say dont really change the driver and putter your using, although you might consider changing midrange to a Roc instead of a shark. just keep practicing! that is the only thing that will get you more distance consistantly. you can buy all the discs in the world, but if you dont know how to throw them it wont help.
I actually really like my shark; it is a perfect midrange for me.
I also got a Orc for a distance driver and it is working out a little better for me than the Valkyrie... though honestly they are about the same for me... I just like the feel of the orc a little better and the throw path that it takes.
I threw a 10 over my last time out, so I am getting there slowly but surely... way better than the 30 I was throwing before watching this video and my last 3 outings!!!
As a beginner, the Archangel has really come together for me compared to my other discs, but it's characteristics are very fickle. It has a strange, long, curving flight path and goes berserk in wind.
If you can get the Valk to fly straight for you, eventually it will give you more distance than the Archangel. If you're still having trouble, consider a Dragon, as it is much more consistant, not as demanding as a Valk, and seems to do better in wind.
Hey man, thanks for posting this video! It will be very helpful! I have only played disc golf three times right now, but I have a terrible score mainly because I have a terrible drive (it usually takes me about 3 throws to get on the green on a par 3). I am going to try these tips out later today (I have already been practicing the technique and it just feels better already)!
Will do - We're working on getting some more of the local Am guys to share tips and Beato definitely has more to share on driving, snap, footwork and hitting lines.
A friend of mine recommended I get either the Valkyrie or the Orc for a driver (and I didn't like how the Orc felt and that it was a little heavier than the Valkyrie). He said these were best for beginners.
And I was trying to decide between the Aviar and the Birdie when my friend said he hated the birdie, but the Aviar was good.
I don't really see enough difference between the fairway driver and the mid-range... I'm just content to use the Distance Driver for shots that are too far for the Mid-range. I'd rather just not spend the money on it because I don't see it as being that much of an addition to my arsenal. I could be wrong, but none of my friends use them either and they do good without them.
An orc is too overstable for a beginner. It wasn't until I could throw over 300 feet that i could throw an orc well. A beast is slightly less stable but is still too much for some beginners.
This video is money!!! I watched the video and thought this guy cant be serious, there's nothing to that throw and after mocking it, my brother tries it and almost gets an Ace!!!!!!!! We used it the rest of the round and my drives were significantly longer.....try this.
I have been playing disc golf for about two years and my drives still go no further than about 220' if I am lucky. I just can not seem to figure this drive thing out.Only thing I end up with is sore knees, sore ankles,a sore hip,and a sore elbow. Other than that I do pretty good.
Thanks for posting this video and thanks to Dan for instructing it. I'm looking forward to trying this technique on the course this weekend. Wish me luck!
Great Video. I did these drills for about 90 minutes, starting with the "hit" and working back as you suggest. Then going progressively with the footwork. The next round I played after doing the drills, my distance and accuracy were already improved (if only by about 30-50 feet - but still great for one day!). I even got two birdies in a row thanks to some great drives (I am a bogey player at my local course so that's pretty good for me). Thanks again and keep them coming!
This is the most helpful video I have seen. Dan is very thorough, collective, and easy to follow. I've been playing for 5 years and I feel this video will really help me fill in some gaps. I will win the coming Ice Bowl in adv. Thanks!
I can't wait to get out to a field and work through these drills. This is the best disc golf instruction video that I've found on the web to date. I've got about 5-6 things to tweak on my pull as a result of Dan's instruction (6 minute video). No stupid guitar riffs, no wasted time with intros, canned graphics or fancy transitions. Dan hits the crucial areas of the drive, the slow mos are great. I wish I would have seen this video 6 years ago. I would love to get my technique looking 1/2 as good
Thanks for making the great video. I'm new to the sport and needed a guide to driving properly. I'm gonna start implementing these drills and hopefully gain some distance and accuracy. I like how you broke the motion, and showed simple drills to work on.
This is the most practical step by step video on how to drive that I have ever seen. Why couldn't Discraft with all their professionally done videos have done a PRACTICAL driving video like this????
one of the best form video's out there. I saw the link posted on a discgolfreview board. I'll have to try all of those pointers out. Thanks! I also agree with starting out without stepping and working up to the x-step.
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen in regards to making me understand what was wrong with my form.
I never used my back foot to aid in the acceleration and turn, but after watching how you do it, it made total sense.
Every course I play is under about two feet of snow right now so I'll have to wait a couple of months to test out the real benefit. But I have been practicing that form.
Thank you for your reply! I teach people the same drills and they have always worked before and I am confident that it will work for you as well, that is why I made this video to share with everyone. These technique drills I teach are from what I have been taught and have gathered from the forms of the best players in the world such as Steve Brinster and Walter Haney as well as many other pros like Climo and Feldberg.

I also use a Valkyrie which is perfect for beginners just starting to play and looking for max distance. this video is the best video on youtube to learn how to throw your disc...i watched this video probably like a month and a half ago and now i can throw 400 feet...thanks beto!
JTxM3e46 1 year ago
Just wanted to say that by holding the disc to your chest then releasing, you are loosing a lot of speed that you COULD have, just some advice, extend your arm all the way out and pull all the way across ( shoulder to shoulder) until your arm is once again, fully extended. Im not saying your Technique is wrong im just suggesting you may get more oomph this way. Nice video though.
burdette899 1 year ago

@Avengist
Discraft Nuke, Innova TeeRex or an Innova Boss is pretty good in a headwind...anything that is pretty overstable will work well in the wind

I can hammer a ~80 meter throw with my 175g Beast, but the accuracy is bad. With your tip I started to train my drive with 172g Leopard, and as result, today I managed to hammer my first ACE in Siltamäki/Helsinki/Finland track #17 (par3|50m).

BrinkyJ 2 years ago
This is the technique I use and it works. Just practice over and over and you'll get it.
aliencrap 2 years ago
Don't give up. Have you tried different discs? How old are you? Maybe you just don't have the strength and body weight to get the disc very far. Look at the guy in the video. He's pretty big and muscular, so of course he can throw far. If you aren't very big, you just have to get as much momentum going as possible. Practice standing still first to make sure you've got your accuracy down. Then begin to make run-ups, and maybe a little bit of a spin.
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
That's not entirely true, weight and muscle have little to do with distance. At our local course, there's 2 kids, 12 & 14 years old who play, both are short and skinny yet both can blast a 350'+ drive at any given time. It's all about technique. ANYONE can learn to throw far. Practice makes improvements.
Testament31904 2 years ago
I meant for a beginner it does. If you don't have the weight and muscle to throw far naturally, then you're going to have to work at it. If he's a beginner, and small, that may explain why he can't throw far. That's why i told him he has to get some momentum going. He can't just stand there and expect the disc to take off by itself.
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
I agree. Torque and speed is much more important that muscle power. Dave Wiggins seems to be pretty scrawny yet he obtains 600'.
TIKOMIX 2 years ago
Same with Matt Orum, Kris Orrick, even Coda Hatfield. All Scrawny dudes but they have some loooong bombs due to their extreme speed and snap.

daminox 2 years ago
I've been playing for a few months now. I don't really have any good amateurs or pros that will show me anything, so I've been self-teaching. I've gone through trial and error with a bunch of different videos, tutorials, etc. and this is by far the best video. If you follow these instructions step by step, and don't skip ahead you will add distance to whatever your best drive is now. I was maxing out at about 250'-300' before, now I'm creeping on about 400'. Thank you very much for posting this.
archimedesjs 2 years ago
I can only throw about 250-300 ft. been playing for a few weeks. is that normal.
xAuBuRn 2 years ago
If you are being consistent then yes, that's pretty damn good. Accuracy over distant any day. It's good to be able to throw really far, but if you're getting 250-300 ft. and making it consistently, you're doing nice. =]
Testament31904 2 years ago

bedfordxc 2 years ago
which disc would someone recomend for a beginning driver? I just started and i realized i suck at the initial throw, so i am looking for a good driver, but i need a good one.
bedfordxc 2 years ago
I'd recommend all of these:
Overstable - Firebird (for big hyzers and windy days)
Stable - Teebird (straight shots and tricky lines)
Understable - Valkyrie (max distance)
Stay away from the fast stuff! Trust me - I learned this the hard way.
joeveenpresents 2 years ago
Haha. Yeah, I started with the leopard, and I just can't handle the curve yet. I only started three days ago.
So I want a decent beginning disc, but i did not want to just buy one. So thanks for the recomendation!
bedfordxc 2 years ago
Actually, keep throwing the leopard (stable to understable) and pick up a Valkyrie for max distance. You should be able to throw most lines with those two.
joeveenpresents 2 years ago
@joeveenpresents amen. good advice :D i love my valk :DDDD
paintballlpplayer45 1 year ago
@joeveenpresents - I have to disagree on the Firebird. That's a hard disc for beginners. I would stick to the Valk and the Leopard starting out. AND STICK TO THOSE TWO! Don't run out and buy a bunch of discs. That was a lesson I learned... Use the Teebird for windy days.
dapfury 1 year ago
@joeveenpresents You are correct. I started with a given disc a Star Xcal that I throw forearm, but after watching this I went outside grabbed my Roc and practiced that form static just focusing on the form displayed and I threw it at 75% far longer than I could throw it earlier today 100% power with a run-up. Now I have 2 fast discs(c destroyer, s xcal) I'm wondering if I can even throw.
sh1yne 1 year ago
@sh1yne I just realized the complete flaw in my game after practicing this. Now I have 2 discs I was using to compensate for my lack of technique. Just doing the first motions and simplest form I took a horrendous back hand and added more control and distance using less effort with a midrange then I had with my drivers. I was using them forehand to mask my lack of technique.
sh1yne 1 year ago
@joeveenpresents Would you recomend the Champion Monarch? My friend has one and thats his go to disc

@joeveenpresents Worst disc selection advice for a beginner, ever.
I know it's been a year but it had to be said.
Testament31904 1 year ago
@joeveenpresents thanks, that actually helped me. I got a firebird and valkrie. Waitin on the t-bird. There is one hole at my local that demands a straight long throw followed by a sharp fade, the firebird fits the bill perfectly. Also, the valkyrie is consitently my longest disk when throwing in the field. When I switch to side arm, it often ends in a roll for even more distance.

I've applied this method in the last couple of weeks and have already improved both my accuracy and distance. I am now throwing my midranges as far as I had been throwing my drivers, which has vastly improved my accuracy and helped to lower my scores!

Oh and I would say one more thing that might help people keep the disc down a bit (helps me) is to start up above the shoulder with the wind-up and flatten out as you go into the punch... basically it should feel like you are about to throw it into the ground, but you should auto-adjust to flatten it out. I know some people have trouble doing this, but it works very well for me.
damienbarber 2 years ago

I basically stopped doing a full run-up and focused on the wind-up and whip in this video.
damienbarber 2 years ago
Keep working those mechanics! Now that my form is down - I find that I can overdrive most 250' shots with no run up.
joeveenpresents 2 years ago
Just wanted to drop my 2 cents in. Thanks for posting this video. I needed something that would help me with my technique and power and this is exactly what I was looking for, 5 stars :)

widegap 2 years ago
Good point, compressing the arm before the snap. But this seems to be a bit misleading the way you break it down; it glazes over the importance of the full arm —from the shoulder, out— whip motion used to create inertia before engaging your elbow.

Hey, I am still not getting much distance off of my Distance Driver (I know more will come with time), and I was wondering if you think the archangel might give me even more distance than the Valkyrie... what do you think?
damienbarber 2 years ago
stick with your valkyrie, the archangel would be alright for you, but the valkyrie is a faster disc so you will get more distance out of it. i would say dont really change the driver and putter your using, although you might consider changing midrange to a Roc instead of a shark. just keep practicing! that is the only thing that will get you more distance consistantly. you can buy all the discs in the world, but if you dont know how to throw them it wont help.
tyvek05 2 years ago
I actually really like my shark; it is a perfect midrange for me.
I also got a Orc for a distance driver and it is working out a little better for me than the Valkyrie... though honestly they are about the same for me... I just like the feel of the orc a little better and the throw path that it takes.
I threw a 10 over my last time out, so I am getting there slowly but surely... way better than the 30 I was throwing before watching this video and my last 3 outings!!!
damienbarber 2 years ago
Shark is better than Roc off the shelf imo...I think the Shark is less overstable, less hook at the end.
But that's the universal debate isn't it. lol. Those are the two most purchased mid-range discs.
Why do you think the Roc is better?
officerrob 2 years ago
Get a discraft avenger ss... preferably esp, flx
Medium0Rare 2 years ago
As a beginner, the Archangel has really come together for me compared to my other discs, but it's characteristics are very fickle. It has a strange, long, curving flight path and goes berserk in wind.
If you can get the Valk to fly straight for you, eventually it will give you more distance than the Archangel. If you're still having trouble, consider a Dragon, as it is much more consistant, not as demanding as a Valk, and seems to do better in wind.
Niven42 2 years ago
Hey man, thanks for posting this video! It will be very helpful! I have only played disc golf three times right now, but I have a terrible score mainly because I have a terrible drive (it usually takes me about 3 throws to get on the green on a par 3). I am going to try these tips out later today (I have already been practicing the technique and it just feels better already)!
Keep 'em coming bro!
damienbarber 2 years ago
Will do - We're working on getting some more of the local Am guys to share tips and Beato definitely has more to share on driving, snap, footwork and hitting lines.
BTW, what are you throwing for discs?
joeveenpresents 2 years ago
DD = Valkyrie
MR = Shark
P&A= Aviar
All of these are DX plastic.
A friend of mine recommended I get either the Valkyrie or the Orc for a driver (and I didn't like how the Orc felt and that it was a little heavier than the Valkyrie). He said these were best for beginners.
And I was trying to decide between the Aviar and the Birdie when my friend said he hated the birdie, but the Aviar was good.
damienbarber 2 years ago
That's a good setup! The next disc that I'd recommend is a good stable fairway driver - Teebird or TL.
joeveenpresents 2 years ago
I don't really see enough difference between the fairway driver and the mid-range... I'm just content to use the Distance Driver for shots that are too far for the Mid-range. I'd rather just not spend the money on it because I don't see it as being that much of an addition to my arsenal. I could be wrong, but none of my friends use them either and they do good without them.
damienbarber 2 years ago
I just got the TL and its a great, straight flying driver for those tight fairways.
officerrob 2 years ago
An orc is too overstable for a beginner. It wasn't until I could throw over 300 feet that i could throw an orc well. A beast is slightly less stable but is still too much for some beginners.
Imjony5 2 years ago
Orc is a slightly understable disc as far as I know... and as far as it has flown for me.
damienbarber 2 years ago
I use my orc more than any driver in my bag, 2nd fave is a banshee.
Testament31904 2 years ago
Same here I throw an orc on almost every drive. A beast isn't quite stable enough for me anymore.
Imjony5 2 years ago

Great Video. I did these drills for about 90 minutes, starting with the "hit" and working back as you suggest. Then going progressively with the footwork. The next round I played after doing the drills, my distance and accuracy were already improved (if only by about 30-50 feet - but still great for one day!). I even got two birdies in a row thanks to some great drives (I am a bogey player at my local course so that's pretty good for me). Thanks again and keep them coming!
tetherball23 3 years ago 2

I can't wait to get out to a field and work through these drills. This is the best disc golf instruction video that I've found on the web to date. I've got about 5-6 things to tweak on my pull as a result of Dan's instruction (6 minute video). No stupid guitar riffs, no wasted time with intros, canned graphics or fancy transitions. Every course I play is under about two feet of snow right now so I'll have to wait a couple of months to test out the real benefit. But I have been practicing that form.
GREAT VIDEO!

Good luck!
