@ 7:37 minutes you can see that the black conductive plastic covering on the HOT wire is touching the HOT connection! This is very BAD and will cause the signal to lose treble or volume. You MUST cut the conductive plastic layer away so that it does not touch the HOT terminal!! Sorry guys... this makes it a BAD video!! ALWAYS use NEUTRIK jacks, they are the cream of jack plugs!
@ThePureMixTutorials Well, you're setting yourselves up as the experts and teaching musicians to do things incorrectly. Also, the presenter was referring to the shield cable as the hot conductor when it was clearly, to those who know, soldered to the wrong terminal... later in the video it was shown to be incorrect. Why not pull this video off air and correct it? YouTube is a great educational tool, if you REALLY know your stuff!
Little to add: you forgot to mention about wet sponge at your soldering station and I would recommend - add a tiny bit of soldering paste on the soldering surface before applying solder itself. Thanks
Very nice, I'm tired of cables crapping out on me in the middle of a song! From now on I will have only myself to blame! I read another persons demo once that suggested filling in the newly soldered area with Krazy Glue to make it permanent. Any thoughts on that? And nice video, thanks.
Hi... I want to convert my guitar wireless system cable jack from straight to right-angle. And when I opened it, there was a capacitor...Is it necessary to still have that capacitor when I transfer it to a right-angle jack? Thanks.
They're called strippers because hey have long legs and thigh length stockings and a snappy mouth and they get used and abused on cable at night and sometimes during the day!!!
Thanks, this video is very helpful. I have a question. I think I've overtinned my iron or something, is it normal for the iron to change colors when you are using it? When I turn mine on, the tip area and the metal shaft leading up to it turn dark/black. The tip itself usually is not because I tin it, but the other areas do.. Also, if I leave it in the stand on for a minute or two, the tip starts to darken. I also have a hard time getting excess tin off the tip. Is this normal?
Good video overall, but I think you did a rather poor job tinning those wires... you were applying solder to the iron and spreading it out over the wire, which is exactly what should NOT be done when soldering anything.
@hotlion81 Not true. When tinning wires, it's perfectly acceptable to tin the the tip of the soldering iron first and then allow the solder to flow over the wire. The rosin core solder will allow it to spread evenly and deep through the wire. This is a different procedure than if you were soldering circuit boards. Then, yes, you want to apply the heat to the wire first and then gently feed the solder in.
I looked at my mogami cable today and the solder used for itwas very shiney like silver or some kind of metal. is there a dfferent type of cord solder material i can use to solder the end points to to the jack that will last me as much as a mogami cable? those things are bullet proof.
@PsnIDShMuK Any rosin core solder should be good enough to last you a while as long as you use proper technique while soldering. P.S. It looks metal because it is metal
@PsnIDShMuK If you buy a temperature controlled soldering iron (which I recommend), then wattage is not an issue. If you are buying an iron that plugs straight into a wall (not recommended), then about 25 or 30 watts should do the trick. When using a temperature controlled iron, I would say work at at least 650 degrees Fahrenheit. The more skilled you get, the hotter you can go (just makes it quicker). I usually work at 750 degrees.
I solder a new output jack on my squire strat and it sound great on two of the channels, however the other three are staticy, plus when i change the volume on the guitar it creats static! How can I fix this? did I do something wrong?
@almzap For a soldering iron, I'd recommend the Weller WESD51. If that's too pricy, then pretty much any Weller products are good. For solder, it's not super important, as long as it's Rosin Core lead solder. The best stuff is Kester 44.
@ThePureMixTutorials3:50 Does it really matter if the Hot and Shield are reversed as long as they are the same on BOTH plugs? What differences would this make?
@ThePureMixTutorials Also, does the Hot wire on cable have to go THROUGH the hole on the terminal of the plug? Also, If you use Flux, do you still have to tin the wire?
@MrMutron It does not have to go through the hole, it just has to make direct connection to the terminal. And it's always a good idea to tin your wires.
Is soddering some kind of deviant act? Oh, it's soLLdering your talking about! Only joking! Your accent makes it sound like soddering. Good clear video by the way.

That's a different technique than what I usually see - tinning the wires, putting the iron on the plug and feeding the solder to it...
Why no flux ?
MegaManVid 5 months ago
@MegaManVid Because he uses rosin cored solder. You can see the flux boiled off.

@ThePureMixTutorials I mean i'ts not a mono input with only 2 places to solder, it is a stereo one, with 3.
MrV1C7OR 7 months ago
@MrV1C7OR
oh, that's known as a tip-ring-sleeve (TRS) connection. In that scenario the hot goes to tip, the cold goes to ring, and shield goes to sleeve.
