Collins? How was Collind a scourge to Ireland. He was sent to make the decision the english did not allow him to return to discuss it ith Develera. He was told if he did not sign the treaty war would be declared on Ireland. Ireland at the time would not hae been able to beet Britain in a war. He took the best option he could. For if he hadn'r Ireland would have been destroyed and would have had no chance of regaining independancy

We were fighting them for hundreds of years, to take this compromised agreement was a slap in the face to every Irish man, woman and child who had their life taken by the British. It was as clear at the time as it is now that sacrificing the North was a massive mistake. Collins himself said afterwards that in signing the Treaty he signed his own death warrant. He knew he made a mistake and he paid for it with his life. (Got no more to say on this...not replying again)

No the deal did not have to be done...Collins just wanted to get his name in history books, he took an easy out. He was a country boy negotiating with lords, totally out of his league. The conflict should have proceeded. Can you honestly say that in 1939 if the UK had Ireland fighting for independance they wouldn't have submitted? Don't you think they'd have other things on their mind. Collins and de Valera had their chance and they blew it.

At the end of the day they couldn't have got northern Ireland even if the English had agreed. There would have always been war between Republicans and unionsts in the north no matter what. Collins played a ital role in securing 26 free countie. The fact that people can stand here and critscise hm is terrible without him we would have been still under brittish control.

Almost all Unionist are lower church Protestant or Presbyterian, likewise Republican are Catholic so it means pretty much the same thing. Both the Catholics and Presbyterian had a peaceful relationship with each other before the partition, both rightly despised the Protestant high church. Point is they would not have kept fighting if partition did'nt happen, it was collins that cased the bitter fighting.
