I have just discovered a new hobby rowing on the Concept 2 in the gym.You can do different challenges and put yourself for the world ranking for your age and weight.500m 4th,1000m 7th,4mins rowing 2nd,2000m 7th,5000m 8th and 6000m 4th in the world for 50-59 and under 75 kg.I am happy with that but can improve. You take care I hope you are in the best of health.I am Phillip Cameron
I've been rowing for 4 years and i have an erg technique and water technique. Erg wise i have an extreme lean back to get every inch of my stroke and at the catch i pretty much hit the handle on the front stop.
A few questions. Why can't ergo's be used anaerobically as implied? Why is it stated as so important not to lean too far back? What's the worse that can happen...you would know its inefficient after a few minutes even if you've never seen an ergo before because your abs will be screaming at you: "you tw*t, why the f**k am i leaning so far back!?". Also for some reason its VERY different from competitive rowing...is it!? This implied competitors always make the mistake of leaning too far back :p
i dont think his hands are supposed to drop like that. they should stay at a steady level the whole way. Also he pauses when he hits the finish. the handle should sorta like bounce off the chest. that way you get a nice slide going and you dont have to rush the slide up to the catch. Also personally the handle should be hitting round your sternum-ish area or beneath your pec's.
Well you won't burn as many calories as running. But it is most effective than saying cycling, all of this depends on how hard you are going of course. The best part about rowing though it is a full body work out
pulling it up to the technique is worse, you dont get any more power out of it so its wasting energy really, mind you the guy in the video kept on pausing, the rowing stroke should be a continuous fluid motion.
fair enough, there are actually a few techniques, i row out on the water as well so the technique that i use has to fit the technique thats used on the water
i dont think pulling it up to your chin is the best idea because if your rowing in the water and you "catch a crab", then your face is screwed. but thats just my opinion
....39 seconds for 200m? get down the gym mate and get it down to 30. the pace your pulling for 200m I can sustain for over 2 kilometres...easy and I am nothing special.
hey u seem to know wot ur talkin bout. at my youth club we brought a rowin machine in. i started trainin for it cause we had a 200m competition. i did 34sec. u got any recommendations for gettin under 30? is it true that its all in how hard u pull and now the speed or distance? cause im quite small and im 16. thx for any advice u give
which means you are pulling slower for 2 hundred metres than I do for 2 thousand. I am not taking the piss I am simply suggesting that you don't suggest that is good because if a rower comes on they will just start laing into you. i hope i haven't done so too much
Depends what you want. I'd say to get in shape and stay in shape, go for longer, plus 30 minutes hard and steady. But if your training to compete, go hard out. A mix is also beneficial.
he said that recreational rowing is very different from competitive rowing, assuming he is talking "recreational" technique on the erg. this should be the way you should row if you are jumping right into rowing with no past experience so you dont throw your back out.
I couldn't afford a ConceptII, and its a tad long. I ended up buying a Bodycraft rower. Its pretty sturdy, but its computer is complete sh!t. Still working on my stroke ... is 27 strokes/min about right?
Concept 2 is easily the best. The body lean forward before raising the legs may help to allow your hands to clean over the knees before they start to raise but is not so necessary on the erg. On the water..of course that's another matter entirely!
I've been looking into buying a rowing machine. What do you think about the Stamina Body Trac Glider 1050 rowing machine? I know that's kinda specific but I really need some advice on buying an affordable rowing machine. Hope you can help.
yeahhh LOCK THOSE KNEES! that'll really get your cartilage muscles on fire! -_-

this isnt bad technique, he just pauses at the finish, and goes too down and around, not bad technique compared to what else you will find on youtube

use more your body, and don't start to push with your body...
u look like a robot, just relax, try to be more "flowing" with your arms.
don't stop the "oar" on the back...
and maybe it will be "correct", but u won't be able to do a long distance with these positions ...

How does this compare withe other forms of cardio; is it as effective as, say, running, cicyling, spinning, or using the treadmill?

I'm not convinced, I think rowing is more strenuous than running if you give it everything.

that technique is terrible, you must pull the handle bar up close to your chin

how long should you row for, should you for for ages at a low intensity or hard out for a short time?

Not familiar with the machine you bought, but no. 27 strokes is high. For Cardio you want to be 18-24.

My trainer got me to keep it at 35! I do cardio on the treadmill
SaOuGenLa 3 years ago
It also depends how tall you are. 27 is probably too fast if you're above 6'0'' and you're doing cardio (greater than 2000 km).

Deffinetly get a concept II, also this guy isnt doing it but you need to establish your body forward before you start to recover with your legs
teapotsrock598 4 years ago
concept 2 is where it's at. you want a recent model too - it goes model A,B,C,D and I think they recently brought out the E ... or it's coming out.
