I've seen UM many times and have hung out w/ both bands. No offense but they're not even in the world as Trey or Phish whether were talking about playing their instruments or the quality and soulfulness of their songs.

Jake is good and all but to make him lead over barber unlss its a UM tune is silly. Seriously, when barber is on fire, he's my favorite guitarist ever. Bold statement but true.

Jake doesnt't make as many mistakes as Trey, but I don't feel he pushes himself or his band as far as Trey did with Phish. Let's face it, at this point, UM has no compositional work the likes of "Reba" or "Fluffhead". "Nothing Too Fancy" is still the shit though... Give Jake time and he may make me look like an asshole for this comment, and i hope he does.

There is no disagreeing with that statement but the fact of the matter is that Umphrey's have defined themselves as a prog rock band. Their musical ambitions/style can't ever really be compared to the likes of Phish/Trey....

dont get me wrong i absolutley love trey and think he is a great guitar player, but there are alot of guitar players that i think are better or on the same level as trey i.e - derek trucks, jeff beck, alan holdsworth, jerry garcia, steve kimmock, steve vai, jimmy herring, warren haynes,mcglaughlin...... the list goes on and on u just need to go out and listen to more new music

@banooba you don't know anything. warren haynes can not touch trey anastasio. derek trucks is amazing, but he is not nearly as versatile. he's an amazing slide guitarist but that'sjust what he is, a slide guitarist. so many grateful dead songs were so fucking simple, it was a simplistic genius no doubt, but trey pushed the jams harder than jerry did.sorry, but nice try

this is true dataman, i also believe tha everyon should know by now that nobody, and really i do think that it is nobody, compares to trey. when he is on his game... there is nothing to say, he is simply just tthe best. who gives a crap if he makes mistaks once in a while. listen to a good maze or chalkdust peak by trey, and tell me he is not the best guitarist in the world... i dare you

I don't think phreak's original comment is accurate, but I also don't think trey is the best in the world. I think phish is the best jam band there ever will be, but there are some people that can give trey a run for his money in jamming ability. Jimmy Herring, (now with WSP) just to name one, is incredible. Also Guthrie Govan jams out like no other, if you can deal with how many notes he plays.  Check out his blues jam tracks videos! You probably wont even believe he is jamming he's so good!
