If you think that he isn't doing the locking moves correctly, then say that he isn't doing them correctly. Don't say that "he isn't locking" because he is clearly doing locking moves for the first half of this video. But I do agree that his locking isn't very good. You can see all the transitions and he never fully "locks" into his positions/shapes.

literally speaking, is isn't LOCKING, but the moves are on point...he just needs to tighten it up...but one must understand that this is strictly choreography...which is pretty hard...locking is hard...it's even harder if more than 1 person (in this case 10+ including usher himself) must do the same exact moves...overall a good performance

You can tell he's not cause of the way he moves :). Beside that, I teach locking, and you kind of have eyes for certain things. Start with Skeeter Rabbit's tutorials (may God rest his soul). They are really good. Good luck with it :).

Alot of people forget that MJ was selling records, touring and performing for 30 years (1965-1995) before they started throwing around the "King of Pop" title. You don't get King of anything until you been around for a long while, not 5-10 years. When I see Usher ripppin it up on stage at 45 years old, then I listen to "king" talk. This performance was meant to be a THROW BACK to the seventies, that's why Usher is Locking. It is cheorographed, it's a show - as in planned and put together to evoke sentiment. On a regular night, Usher doesn't do Locking at all, he would do more poppin. MJ is king of POP and R&B (IMO). this is definitely locking, not popping. both are funk styles, but locking is characterized by its own moves (you can see usher doing the Stop n Go in the beginning). basically, when you do those moves and add some of your own funky style to it, it's locking. popping (or "hitting") is the tensing of muscles to the beat, which is not what's happening here.
