I just bought a Vespa GTS 300 Super for commuting, love it but would still love a supermoto or even the motard style (still dirtable specs) version of the same bike like you show. Agree with choice.
Great video and review, I have a Subaru and love your comment at 3:15 it seems we have similar tastes... I'm looking for a commuting bike and grew up on dirt bikes, I'm deciding between this bike and a few others so I appreciate your video, cheers!
I'm taking my full test soon and am thinking about looking for a DRZ400sm as a next bike once I pass. Top speed isn't a problem for me, but I like to go out on rides with mates around twisties, and sometimes hit the A-roads for a trip back. (18 miles is the longest a-road trip I've taken so far).
@CultureShockSix Yes. 18miles of A-road is perfectly fine for the bike. I know Americans who have sat on 'highways' for a whole hour at 75mph with no dramas. So long as YOU can handle the trip riding on a naked and vibey bike then there really isn't a problem.
@FeaRxFuZioN I bought my 2007 DRZ400S with a stroker kit taking it to 430cc last year with 2,100 miles for $3,200 i'll be hitting 10k miles in a few weeks and still runs great, just oil changes every 2,000-2,500 i ride it a little harder. I live in Kentucky so twisty roads as common and so much fun. It's a head turner for sure. Great investment. I bought the larger 4 gallon tank and get 200 miles before Empty, 175 to reserve.
@FeaRxFuZioN Sorry, very late reply. I got this bad boy for £2500 bought privately with just 2500miles on the clock. I would advise an 07-on because I believe that's the year Suzuki started to loctite bolts and made changes to the cam chain tensioner. There's nothing majorly wrong with the older, but enthusiasts say you must replace the ACCT with a manual tensioner (MCCT) and loctite the stator bolts.
Great video man. Im thinking about getting rid of my 05 cbr 600 f4i to get a super moto. I love my cbr because of the power and speed and everything but, i cant seem to have as much fun on it as i use to on dirt bikes. Ive ridden dirtbikes since age 4 and just traded my 07 crf450r for this cbr. Is the drz more fun to ride than a bigger bike?
@redneckmowerman Sumos make most sense when ridden on twistie roads or in towns/cities. The highway is far more fun on a sportsbike. I have a Yamaha FZ6 but the DRZ seriously gives a bigger grin (but note that I always ride inner city). Also note that the Honda CRF450R has a lot more power than a DRZ. The DRZ was built around reliability, long oil changes, the engine isn't in as a high state of tune and is a bit heavier than the CRF.
@187Premises I usually ride twisty country roads and the city. Rarely do i get on the highways. I understand the drz will have much less power than the crf. I owned a ltz400 quad, which have the same engine as the drz. Im not much on speed, more of a wheelie and jump type of guy, lol. I can wheelie my cbr just fine. But i figure the drz will be easier to muscle around, plus i'll be able to go straight from the road to the trails to some jumps, as i live in rural kentucky.
@redneckmowerman DRZ is a great bike for KY roads, i live here to NKY but i ride to louisville and richmond to visit friends on my DRZ400S. I'm 6'5 and the bike fits me like a glove, Sport bikes are too cramped for my frame. If you are a shorter female you may have some work keeping it up at low speeds. The seat drops to around 32 inches once your weight is on the suspension. I can see everything on the road and has great visibility.
Hey man, can you tell me why you didnt bought an FMX cause im searching for a supermoto and everyone seems to say bad stuff about FMX. Whats your opinion about it? What differences does it have with DR-Z. Im a new driver..
@Adnoctumz The FMX is a nice bike and is extremely reliable because it uses the old Honda Dominator engine. The problem people have is the poor power to weight ratio. Some people complain about the DRZ400 being 35hp / 146kg. But the FMX650 takes it a step further by being 37hp / 163kg. The FMX being heavier will probably make it better suited for highway use, but I really cannot recommend putting any sumo on the highway period.
@187Premises Hi, i have a question i live in London and have a cbf 125 at the moment, im willing to go for a2 licence as soon as i have enough funds for the bike and licence, i was leaning towards a rocket probs sv 650 or cbr 600 cause of the looks and the sound (wheelies :), but then i thought of a sumo drz400, it fits all the categories! cheapest insurance tp on drz would be 917 do u think is a good choice i terms of the fun factors, daily commutes to work/uni and usual meets....
Just traded my 170 kilo 50 bhp XT660X for a 130 kilo 40 bhp DRZ400SM mainly because where i have to keep it was a pain to get it in & out width & weight wise.
Also where as you say the xt660x is more suited to motorways i still found myself more comfortable @ 60-65 so drz should be fine for what short motorway journeys i do........ I hope. RIDE SAFE BACK SAFE. THINK BIKE!
Every time I look around at motorcycles I become angry over Honda and Yamaha not offering their big supermotos in the USA. I'd buy an XT660X in a heartbeat if I could. The next best thing I'd say would be the DRZ400SM. I'm glad we can at least have that in the USA.
@ph13rwun It was only after making this video that I discovered that them SM's weren't available in the US. Quite shocked I was. The FMX is a dog though. 650cc, heavy and makes less power than a DRZ400. But regardless, variety is always nice.
@ph13rwun Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the XT is reliable, comfy etc, but it won't bring that performance that a supermoto needs to make it stand out... Sure my WR 450 is street legal! (ish :P)
@909Monopoly It tops out at 95mph. You can get 105mph if you change the sprockets. But all in all I dont think any single cylinder supermoto is cut out for frequent highway use. You'd be better off with a twin/4 cylinder.
@MrAudioTerrorist Hey bud. I don't doubt the engines capability of doing long rides. I know a guy who rode his S from England to Africa. It's just that your average rider would prefer something with at least 2 cylinders and a bit of weather protection. At least that was my reason for getting an FZ6. One bike for blitzing the city, the other for highway fun.
@187Premises Also known as the correct way to say z lol. You guys invented the language, and every other english speaking country pronounces stuff the same way as you guys but for some reason the americans mess every other word up lol.
@amritg187 In city traffic I get 50mpg and that's pulling away quick from lights. Gentle city riding should be around 60mpg. On highways your looking at just under 70mpg.

Great video, I'm looking at getting the same bike but I'm only 5'6" so it might be a bit tall for me. Seat height is 890mm I think, how much does the seat go down when your on the bike? Thanks.
hey im planing on going to london to get my car and full bike lincence seeing i live in japan now and im half british just wondering how long it usely takes to get cheers
@xplorer110 i passed my module 2 restricted license and im 18 best bike would be a 400 either a kawasaki zxr400 or a honda cbr 400 its likes the guys say's everyone differs but i have a zxr400 only set me back 1k and its got the speed and its very easy to restrict
There was no burn-outs, wheelies, stoppies, drifting or high speed riding but that was a really interesting video. I felt like I was right there on the bike, scoping the chicks at the crossing and enjoying that feeling you get when riding. I hear what you say about Motards being a bit of a novelty, I live in a small country town in western QLD (Australia) it is moto-cross heaven and I own a motarded DR650, pretty sure it is the only motard in town so it gets some looks.
I am getting a 125cc im looking between enduros and supermotos i ride in the city and 80 km / h roads. So wich one to get and if you ave any suggestion under 5000€ or tips ill be happy to know them
@dest1012008 Your height isn't imortant. It's your leg inseam size that decides it. I think a 30" leg will really struggle to back peddle with this bike. I'm 32" and I'm just ok.
Yeah at first when I started making videos it felt weird.
But what's better, talking to one friend about supermotos or talking to a whole worldwide audience about supermotos?
Just take a moment to read some of these user comments here, you can tell the information is being appreciated and it's actually made a few people interested in buying a supermoto.
@187Premises Yeah Englishman I appreciated the information too, I didn't even know the Honda FMX existed. I love my supermoto even though its a bit too slow but they are great bikes. One thing I don't believe you mentioned in the moderate price of the DRZ!
We seem to have a lot of the exact same reasons for loving supermotos! And it's awesome to see another supermoto vlogger from across the pond! :-D Man, I wish we could filter here. You should see Chicago traffic... :-(
I had to sub for sure. Great minds think alike, after all!
@lauriejennifer Hey LJ. Pleasure to have you. I'm sure I've ran into your channel sometime before. If I visited the US I'd have to go to Cali where it is legal to filter. Sitting behind cars will kill me (if the exhaust fumes don't the idleness in the baking sun will).
@5e4r6t I want to make a "retractable scratch poll device"! Basically I press a button and a poll flips out from the side of my bike scratching anything too close for comfort. Patent pending so dont steal my idea!
@187Premises about how much is your insurance? i assume yours is different from mine (18yo male in the US) mine will most likely be sky high but I wonder if it will be cheaper not being a sportbike
@5e4r6t im 19 and bought a 2010 wr250x insurance for full coverage from progressive was only $700 for the year way cheaper than my car insurance so its not as bad as you think
@5e4r6t im 23 in the U.S. and I pay 9 bucks a month or $100/yr for insurance on my dual sport bike, no collision (wouldn't make sense for only a $2k bike)
It's a excellent bike. I was deciding between the Suzuki DRZ400, Kawasaki KLR650, and the CBR600 or CBR1000r. I ended up with a deal I couldn't turn down for the CBR1000RR though. Keep up the vids!
@187Premises Now mind you, you chose Spain! haha I lived there for a year (Valencia) and the drivers are horrid and dangerous. I literally saw motorcyclists get hit right in front of me, while walking down the side walk. However, I feel I would also get confused going to the UK and driving all opposite-like.
Easy solution for the bike crowding parkers...you need some type of bar ends that have a sharp point on them. Then, when pulling your bike out from between the scooters, OH NO, you accidentally left huge scratches on in their paint and rips in the seat due to your fashionable spike bar ends.
American ingenuity for you. You can steal the idea, I won't mind.
@RandytheAstonishing lmao thanks I've actually thought of that. Not only will it help for parking but also for them cars that want to change into my lane.
The 33BHP supermoto selection is quite limited in the UK but you can have a restrictor fitted to most bikes including the DRZ400sm. The other option is the Yamaha WR250X which is more expensive than the DRZ.
Cutting someone off would involve overtaking them and then dangerously slowing down in front of them which doesn't happen in this video. In most of Europe it's legal to lane split and filter to the lights. In a nut shell filtering eases road congestion and you don't have to sit behind a car inhaling exhaust fumes. Also it's legal in California.
You might as well get a car if your just gonna sit behind traffic.
thanks for uploading this video it was very helpful, since im between wr250x, drz400 dirtbike style or the yamaha R6 .but i mainly ride on the expressway 35 miles each way every day in new york
one question: what about your nice cbf 125, were you unhappy with what it offered for commuting in london ? im asking cause i think its a pretty decent bike im thinking about buying one (even if i could ride something bigger) but i want something agile and all that.. of course your supermoto is nice also, what about its mileage ?
The CBF125 is perfectly suited for dense city traffic. The only reason I got the DRZ was because it is a step up engine-wise but still it's as light weight, narrow and nimble as a 125. I did a good job leaving many 600's behind in the traffic with the CBF125.
If I wasn't interested extra torque & power I'd still be very happy with the CBF125.
@187Premises Stop worrying about reseller value. It always goes down. If it is not due to the scratch it will be due to the crisis, the financial crunch or whatever. Th more important part is that YOU feel good about that, ride it happy and safe and always towards smiling faces and great destinations.
If I had the money I would have kept my DRZ when I got the 1250, I miss it! , My DRZ is still sitting in the dealers where I traded it in, but with £1500 on top of the trade in price they gave me.
I just bought a Vespa GTS 300 Super for commuting, love it but would still love a supermoto or even the motard style (still dirtable specs) version of the same bike like you show. Agree with choice.

How short is "too short"? I am approx. 175cm and am really keen on getting a supermoto. Cheers
dest1012008 1 year ago
@dest1012008 Your height isn't imortant. It's your leg inseam size that decides it. I think a 30" leg will really struggle to back peddle with this bike. I'm 32" and I'm just ok.

Do you feel weird talking to yourself like this?
maryguk 1 year ago
@maryguk
To me the weirdness is well worth it.
187Premises 1 year ago
@187Premises Yeah Englishman I appreciated the information too, I didn't even know the Honda FMX existed. I love my supermoto even though its a bit too slow but they are great bikes. One thing I don't believe you mentioned in the moderate price of the DRZ!

We seem to have a lot of the exact same reasons for loving supermotos! And it's awesome to see another supermoto vlogger from across the pond! :-D Man, I wish we could filter here. You should see Chicago traffic... :-(
I had to sub for sure. Great minds think alike, after all!
lauriejennifer 1 year ago
@lauriejennifer Hey LJ. Pleasure to have you. I'm sure I've ran into your channel sometime before. If I visited the US I'd have to go to Cali where it is legal to filter. Sitting behind cars will kill me (if the exhaust fumes don't the idleness in the baking sun will).
Ride safe!

@5e4r6t I want to make a "retractable scratch poll device"! Basically I press a button and a poll flips out from the side of my bike scratching anything too close for comfort. Patent pending so dont steal my idea!
187Premises 1 year ago
@187Premises about how much is your insurance? i assume yours is different from mine (18yo male in the US) mine will most likely be sky high but I wonder if it will be cheaper not being a sportbike
5e4r6t 1 year ago
@5e4r6t
Mine was £420 for liability, fire & theft. 27yo.
187Premises 1 year ago
@5e4r6t im 19 and bought a 2010 wr250x insurance for full coverage from progressive was only $700 for the year way cheaper than my car insurance so its not as bad as you think
rcfreak632 1 year ago
@5e4r6t im 23 in the U.S. and I pay 9 bucks a month or $100/yr for insurance on my dual sport bike, no collision (wouldn't make sense for only a $2k bike)

It's a excellent bike. I was deciding between the Suzuki DRZ400, Kawasaki KLR650, and the CBR600 or CBR1000r. I ended up with a deal I couldn't turn down for the CBR1000RR though. Keep up the vids!

I hired a bike in Spain, I got confused also.
187Premises 1 year ago
@187Premises Now mind you, you chose Spain! haha I lived there for a year (Valencia) and the drivers are horrid and dangerous. I literally saw motorcyclists get hit right in front of me, while walking down the side walk. However, I feel I would also get confused going to the UK and driving all opposite-like.

another vid maybe ?
will you talk about like what its like to ride things youv noticed stuff you have had to start doin kuz of the bike and that ??
benzo22 1 year ago
Easy solution for the bike crowding parkers...you need some type of bar ends that have a sharp point on them. Then, when pulling your bike out from between the scooters, OH NO, you accidentally left huge scratches on in their paint and rips in the seat due to your fashionable spike bar ends.
American ingenuity for you. You can steal the idea, I won't mind.
RandytheAstonishing 1 year ago
@RandytheAstonishing lmao thanks I've actually thought of that. Not only will it help for parking but also for them cars that want to change into my lane.
187Premises 1 year ago
What supermotos would you recommend for someone who just passed there test (33 BHP)
NoFukinNamesLeft 1 year ago
@NoFukinNamesLeft
The 33BHP supermoto selection is quite limited in the UK but you can have a restrictor fitted to most bikes including the DRZ400sm. The other option is the Yamaha WR250X which is more expensive than the DRZ.
187Premises 1 year ago
@187Premises Could you get away with a stock drz at 39BHP? Also is it hard to restrict and how much does it cost to do it?
Thanks
NoFukinNamesLeft 1 year ago
So in london you can just drive around cars and cut them off and shit and its legal. WTF man, we get in so much trouble for that in the states...
dan0champ 1 year ago
@dan0champ
You might as well get a car if your just gonna sit behind traffic.

one question: what about your nice cbf 125, were you unhappy with what it offered for commuting in london ? im asking cause i think its a pretty decent bike im thinking about buying one (even if i could ride something bigger) but i want something agile and all that.. of course your supermoto is nice also, what about its mileage ?
yabba234 1 year ago
@yabba234
Very good question.

You worry for scratches on your scooter? That's strange...
Quentyn73 1 year ago
@Quentyn73
I don't own a scooter. Both of them pictures where just examples of shoddy bike parking & both pics were taken on the same day.
My new 2009 CBF was in a mint condition once upon a time. Now it has has a scratch across on the half fairing thanks someone's brake lever.
Resale value DOWN!
187Premises 1 year ago
@187Premises Stop worrying about reseller value. It always goes down. If it is not due to the scratch it will be due to the crisis, the financial crunch or whatever. Th more important part is that YOU feel good about that, ride it happy and safe and always towards smiling faces and great destinations.

good explenation.man roads n traffic are so different in each corner of the world.what the hell are those zigzag lines???

Very good points! No non-sense, just rational conclusions! But you forgot one strong argument: the FUN factor! ;)
hellicks 1 year ago
@hellicks Yep, I seriously missed that one out. There's always a big grin inside the helmet.
Also supermotos are known to handle the twisties & turns a lot better than sports bikes thanks to their light weight & acceleration.
