I was drafted in March 1968 took two mounths to program you in, 10 min. to prosess you out, all the time telling you "But the VA will be there to take care of you for free, for the rest of your life" Not here in the good old USA..... we fight for the fat old men, they get the Gold we get the wind. I would go to Canada knowing what I know now !
I am a wounded Vietnam veteran, I am drawn to this song like a moth to a lamp even though it flares up my PTSD and my survivor's guilt. The day after tomorrow is Veteran's Day. There will be a huge parade, Blue Angels, US Senator etc..., but I can't go. All I can do is lie in bed and pretend to try and forget, but at the same time, those who died were my friends. Just saw the RIP posts.... And did not want to think it was true. Indeed, we have lost the greatest voice that God has ever put on this earth. Liam won't be missed, because he will always be with us. God Bless Liam and his family.
Great historical song by Eric Bogle, i'd been playing this version without knowing who these guys are. If you play it the USA no one has a clue what you are singing about.
love this version .iremember a guy by the nameof billy who use to sing this song in the green room bar in cork city back in 77/78 anyone remember-contact me
Thanks so much for posting...although I have it on one of your cd's it's a pleasure seeing the video of you performing it! Such a great song with so many wonderful versions by performers as diverse as June Tabor and Shane McGowan. One of the most touching I've heard was by a Canadian [name long forgotten] in an Irish pub in New Orleans a few years before Hurricane Katrina. Again, thank you for posting!
What is the name of the CD you have? I have been getting into Irish folk music for the past couple years sadly my collection is limited to my parents.
O just a beautiful song. I have been getting into Irish folk a lot the past two year. The sad thing is I was always too young to remember seeing Tommy play at our gaelic fest and when I was older to appreciate his music he passes. But another great rendition of the song is by the Feninans on the CD "A Distance City Street" Thanks for responding so quicklyb
Liam Clancy - what a wonderful version of Eric Bogle's great song - touches heart and soul and so relevant, sadly even today as another old folk song goes when will we ever learn?

As someone said about another song--Farewell Party by Gene Watson--Liam Clancy's version of this haunting song could bring a tear to a glass eye!

This is my all time favourite Remembrance Day song. No other song expresses it so well.

"Year after year the numbers get fewer." Sort of like the Clancys, the Dubliners, and Tommy Makem. :(

Hope I'm correct....I bought a cd 10-15 years ago in Atlanta.,Ga. USA that I think
was named 'The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem"?. I do remember for sure
it was on the Blackbird label. Hope this helps.Oh... this song is included in the tracks. One of those unforgettable songs.

This song was written by Eric Bogle, He came from Peebles in the borders of Scotland.
he has just finished his last tour with his partner John Munro.
He also wrote the "Green Fields of France, His was version called "No man's Land"
The Fureys recorded The Green fields version.
He is one of the best scottish folk writers and without doubt a legend. happy retirement Eric. saw u at Moniave on ur last tour. MAGIC !

@rosesredvioletsblue
Just for ref., the song is "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", not the unofficial Australian national anthem "Waltzing Matilda." HTH
Excellent, true.
You might also like Ronnie Drew's version. (Dubliners)
