I saw True Grit at the movies in 1969. It was terrific. The title song did what movie songs are supposed to do: allow you to relive the movie in your mind. I saw Glen in concert 3 or so years ago at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, NC. He did this song as well as many of his other hits. He also surprised me by playing the bagpipes. He is a talented and versatile entertainer. Re: True Grit; the one line in the movie I remember is a Glen Campbell line, "I ain't dead yet you bushwacker."
I'm an African American male who grew up listening to Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and the Supremes, but I just love Glen Campbell and he has to be rated as one of the greatest guitarist of all time!

Ole Glenn was such a kid in this film . A very good song . Someone said Glenn has True Grit .Amen to that . I saw him on tv the other day with his Children . He is a one of a kind . I wish him and hisfamily well .
I tried to watch the re-make of true grit and it was terrible. I don't care what they say, it was a lackluster film attempt of a classic that failed. I turned it off when she met rooster.
@voiceofelijah2012 I agree, but I found and read the book and the latest version is very true to the story., still doesn,t come close to the original.
@voiceofelijah2012 Liked both, myself. Both are close to the book by Portis and thus both have a good story and are well made. My favourite version is the one from the 60s, because I like certain things a little better...the cinematography being one thing (2010 version did have good cinematography too, though). And I have the best memories of this 'True Grit'.
Just saw him in Reno on his farewell tour. He sang this song as well as his other major hits. He did a great job, he also had 3 of his children in the band. Let me say his daughter is as talented as she is beautiful!!! She'll definitely have a great solo career one day.
@Mrsimonjolly My wife & I went to see him about 4 years ago. He was as talented in voice and on guitar, as ever. Yes, I pray he will find true grit during this time in his life.
One of the greatest masterpieces of all time by *anyone*. Gives me goose bumps even today. I will never forget the beautiful opening scenery of that John Wayne classic as the song plays. Takes me back to a gentler, simpler time. Oh, take me back to 1969...Thank you, Glen. God bless you.
My point is not that I didn't like True Grit. I did. My point was that the description called it "a story of how justice prevails in the untamed West" where I'm not sure it wasn't just simple revenge.

"Thou knowest nothing about history. That was justice in that time!" Explain how it was justified?

Oh, and to the person who tried to call me a hypocrite for liking Pirates 3 and apparently disliking this movie (which isn't quite true ^^^^), I disliked the characters but liked the story.
@HermanJ06 Yes. Also Tom's powder mark is on the opposite side. The Coen brothers claim they never saw this movie, but I cannot believe that. There are too many visual similarities and differences that aren't in the book that could only be purposeful.
@dracosummoner PS. After going to you channel page, I realized what hypocrisy was in your comment! Check out some of those movies and books and games you listed! You my friend, need to get out a little more!
I always loved this song and have associated with it with the movie True Grit. I love that movie and John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Kim Darby and all who were in that movie. I too would love to know if it is all possible to get this in a CD format.
Thank you, Glen Campbell for giving such a wonderful sound performance with this song from "True Grit"! Thank you for such a beautiful video hearing this song with the fine voice of Mr. Campbell and Guitar backround what a beautiful job!
@nemeckathleen1 on iTunes, get the version off the Greatest Hits album. It was remixed in 2009 and sounds wonderful. I love the original, but unless your getting it on vinyl, the remaster is better worth it for 1.29$ on the digital side. You can hear the flat transfer from the original master on the other version. Only a music affectionate would like it. Just like people who love MONO recordings (ME :-D ) lol.
Someone on YT said that Glen Campbell isn't a good actor esp. in this film. Perhaps not, but he certainly is a good singer and this song really showcases his talent. Under appreciated, in my view.
Em, you know, this is not the song I remember for the film. Was there another 'true grit' song? The one I know had a chorus "A man with true griiiit", "He's a man with true griiiit"... "A man with true griiiit".
@superAweber You're right! This is the one Glen did for the record! Although, he did sing the one you hear in the beginning of the Movie! (Modified Version)
I know my dad sure thought alot of him and he used to say the duke was a mans man and he did not like unfairness in the world . He also did not like when alot of young men took off for canada better known as draft dodgers . The duke believe in america and love it or leave it ..
"Theres an old saying that goes, 1 white foot buy him, 2 white feet try him, 3 white feet he's a sly, 4 white feet pass him by. But I don't believe that"
Mr. Wayne used to loan his yacht out to Navy SEAL Team members returning from Vietnam to relax on. Find a panty waste Hollywierd star today who would do such a noble thing. This man was PURE CLASS!!!
@thegrinchl7 I disagree. I enjoyed Glen Campbell's performance very much. I dont understand why people criticize his acting, what was so bad about it? The secret to acting is not to seem like your ARE acting, to act natural. To that end I think he did very well for a novice.
Myself, as well as my entire family, have just loved John Wayne since as far back as AndI can remember. We'd sit down as a family, us kids and my parents, and watch every one of his movies. Very good memories. I just hate that all of the old timers are gone. No one left to respect and admire in Hollywood anymore. I absolute love this song, too:)
@MrNerdSmasher What "cough" does Clint Eastwood "cough, cough" have to do with my comment? (Eastwood, by the way, is also at the top of the short list of actors/people who have earned respect).
This is NOT the original opening track version done in the film. Same song, different recording. Not sure why they used to do this kind of thing since it often doesn't vary much anyway. Poor Glen Campbell. Thanks to the renewed interest in the story generated by the Cohen brother's new version, people are reexamining the OLD version. When they come to Cambell's performance they are all universally dismayed at his horrific performance. He was truly awful in this film!
Leutdan1, they didnt remake the movie. They made the new movie off the book as did the original movie. The acting was so much better in the new one as was the scenery was much realistic to Arkansas.
@emjee I just noticed the reaction that "spacecatsonmars" had to your comment!! What you said was quite funny in my opinion...haha...and you were right!! Her "do" really does resemble Beiber's. Some people just have no sense of humor AND they feel so brave and bold sitting home in front of their computers saying all this sh-t to people they normally wouldn't have the guts to do face-to-face. Anyway, your humor was definitely appreciated :) I think the name "spacecatsonmars" says it all!
Just for amusement... I watched the original "True Grit" just today... Mattie shows up at the horse corral...says she's Mattie Ross... and the horse trader gives her the money for the horses...In this day and age, she would have had to show 3 forms of ID and a certificate of death !! I love the original for the breathtaking scenery...and for the Duke...
A friend of mine (who passed away last year) told me that he knew the Duke when, as a kid in newport beach California My friend met him at the Yaht club and Wayne would challenge the kids to chess games, just like in a couple of his films. My frind said that with Wayne Waht you saw is what he was.
I was shocked to find out that SPOILER ALERT FOR BOTH MOVIES that in this movie LeBoeuf dies but in the new one he does not (which is closer to the book).
@stephaniebrugel My mother hung out with him and he hired my friends and bought movie gear for them to get started in movies. Your wondering would have been answered with all your hopes and more. You can send a message to me for a facebook link and a photo of him and my mom.
@stephaniebrugel his children all made it clear, the man you see on screen was the same man in real life at home. It seemed, based on their own take on their late father, he was himself on and off screen.
i find it odd in the movie that the only real arkansas boy in the movie plays a texan. anybody feel the same? also i think that the movie was terrible in regards to scenery, the woods they showed in the movie looked like nothing you would see in that region. they made a teriible choice in the choosing of where the set of the movie would be.
@DrBreakfastMachine At first I got annoyed at your comment, but then I realized you're only 17, still a child! When you grow up, you might like the song and Movie! Until then, don't make ignorant comments anymore, sonny!
@parsonrobert IMO True Grit hasn't aged well compared to other John Wayne movies. It's from a stage in his career in which he'd become something of a parody of his previous self. He had lost the screen presence he had in movies like The Searchers and Fort Apache. Jeff Bridges plays the part much better in the remake, which also had much more believable dialogue and a more likable version of Mattie, who was a child rather than an adult acting like a child.
@DrBreakfastMachine Thanks for the reply! You articulated your opinion very well. kudos! Although I disagree with your assessment of the original movie, I appreciate your comments.
Bravo !! You captured in this video the difference in the two films... While I love both versions of the movie, the new one lacks the panaramics of the 1969 original that took my breath away...
@shooterwall - As soon as I heard the first few chords, the tears came pouring down, my dad turned the radio way up on this song and sang along with my mom. I am missing my dad 2 1/2 yrs. now. Ahhh simpler times.....
I was 5 years old when I saw this movie. I had such a "crush" (as much as 5yr old can have) on Glen Campbell. I was devastated when he died in the movie. I couldn't understand that it was "just acting". Eventually my parents had to take me to a Glen Campbell concert so I could see that he hadn't really died. To this day, I watch this movie whenever I can. John Wayne was great and my favorite line is when he tells Robert Duvall "Fill your hands you son of a ......"
I love the old classic country songs and I've seen this movie.. John Wayne is my favorite actor. I am 23 but I love all the old stuff.. Country, Tv shows, and movies.
@GeneMoser I learned to shoot with either hand either eye or cross it up if shooting for a beer bet. ;^) For a M-60 or a shotgun it's both eyes open. Pistols and rifles it depends alot.
When I played this song to my girlfriend, who is a Glen Campbell fan but had never heard this song, she burst into tears. It reminded her of her daughter who was going through alot of turmoil at the time. Few songs have that kind of effect on people and this is one of them.
This song brings back memories of the summer of '69 road trip, when I was 10. Our family left NJ to move to Las Vegas, with our belongings in a uHaul trailer. Our car kept breaking down, had to get rid of some our stuff and get a tinier uhaul, then the car gave up and we got an old rusted dodge. had a couple of minor auto accidents & I was carsick most of the way. We limped into vegas about 2 wks after we started out. Wouldn't trade that trip for all the first class accomodations in the world.
@chickenygoodness We moved in late September.I was 8 the car was a blue 61 Ford Galaxy, the u-haul was a 5'by 7'. The move was from Saskatoon, Sask. to Fort McMurray, AB. I was also car sick my dad would smoke Rothman's and we weren't allowed to open the windows. The car got stuck; the road north wasn't paved and it was raining. We had to unpack a lot of the u-haul to get unstuck and my Mom dug away the mud with her cast iron fry pan.
We saw the movie at a Drive-in a few days before we moved.
You shoot a shotgun using both eyes but not a rifle. You close the outside eye (the eye furthest from the rifle stock) to shoot a rifle and Glen was shooting a rifle in the movie......So GeneMoser is wrong in relation to this movie.
@parsonrobert On my long Colt, you WON'T see the loads unless you are looking directly down the barrel. Also, I keep both eyes open as do a lot of shooters, with both handguns and long guns.
@parsonrobert I keep both of mine open, but some people simply cannot. It gives you a better sight picture of the target. Also, it helps to keep them both open if you shoot both right-handed or left-handed. Some shooters simply cannot shoot this way because of a dominant eye.
@parsonrobert Yeah, it is truly better to keep both eyes open if you can. If you read any outdoorsman catalogs, such as Field & Stream or Outdoor Life you can get extra verification. I read on article, giving tips on how to learn to keep both eyes opened. It suggested covering one eye for a while and keep it open while covered. Then eventually, wean yourself off of the eye patch. I personally keep both eyes open.
@GeneMoser, When duck hunting with my 10 guage Remington 11-87 I keep both eyes open. When deer hunting with my Weatherby .300 Winchester Magnum I close one eye. But then don't listen to me I've nailed my bird dog on numerous occasions and happen to be a lousy shot.
@parsonrobert It's not a remake of the old movie, it's a new adaptation of the novel. And I think The Coen brothers are competent enough to make a good movie. It looks great.
I want to thank you for posting this parson. But cant hollywood leave this movie lone without making a remake which is due our dec 25 2010 maybe robert duvall and glen campbell will get a cameo but with the way hollywood is I wouldnt hold my breath.
@parsonrobert That's all tongue in cheek. This was a great movie and Glen Campbell wasn't all that bad in acting. Another director might have done better with him. Kristofferson has done very well as a musician acting in films as has Willie Nelson. As someone who has worked in law enforcement in Texas, though, I can say no Texas Ranger looks so inept as Glen did in this film.
@WilliamRowlett bullets are not a good idea on the set though some use prop bullets i'm sure. His gun may have been used to shoot blanks. He isn't necessarily shooting at the point of that photo. He should have put a bullet in the head of that guy with the mark of Cain... but made a good shot on Duval with the rifle.
@WilliamRowlett Understand the no bullets....but all you need to do is focus on the front sight post....dont have time to close one eye on to focus on the rear sight post.....
Great movie. Beautiful song. The Cohen brothers have their work cut out for them if they think they can improve on this movie. Perhaps they can make it appeal to a younger audience that can't appreciate the greatness of the original, but I doubt they will ever convince me that they can improve on it. I just hope they don't butcher it too bad.
JUNE 5 2010,The Coen Brothers are still shooting in and around Austin Tx,Matt Daman and Francis McDormand have been around town...Movie will be out Christmas...Thanks Parson Robert...I love this song.
they are making a new true grit soon and when i herd i was shocked because it reminded me how much i always loved the duke but have been concrentrating on my mma career and havent watched 1 of his westerns in ages :(. they will never make a better true grit then this .the movie will be utter bullshit and useless unless they steer away from the original plot of the film because this movie is prefect as is all the dukes.R.I.P. THE DUKE NEVER WILL BE FORGETTEN
Maybe it is something about getting on in years and looking back (I've heard it called "the old mans syndrome") but there was something very special about that period in history captured in the music, the artists and the movies of the day, and yes, we all miss "The Duke". Kim Darby who has an innocent appeal about her must have been 22 when she appeared as Mattie Ross in the movie and is now age 62.
i'm totally amazed! re-makes should only EVER be done for one reason...that the original was inferior and therefore a re-make would be the answer.
but the original true grit is a FAULTLESS MOVIE. a great cast, a great storyline, a great song. what are the film makers thinking about? i heard jeff brifges is gonna be rooster cogburn. bridges is a fine actor, but who the hell can fill john waynes shoes? NO ONE.

That sound... guess it was all part of the way many records were made back then... late 60s early 70s. The recording process itself has as much to do with the song's feeling as the the writing and arranging... I reckon.
The original movie is wonderfully entertaining. There are, however, various and sometimes significant differences between the film and novel. I first read the novel in the summer of 1969, then saw the film several times shortly thereafter. Ever since, I have reread the novel and seen the film again multiple times, most recently two weeks ago. Even so, Bridges and Damon strike me as perfect casting for the remake -- also Brolin --
What the heck. I love both the book and the film. But am very much looking forward to the Coens' take on "True Grit." I'm not a huge fan of their work, but all of it is at least interesting and provocative. Jeff Bridges is ideal for Rooster Cogburn. I'd suggest Ben Bratt for LaBouef and Benicio del Toro for Lucky Ned Pepper. For Mattie, geez, I don't know -- maybe Scarlett Johannson, though she's a little old and rather too pretty for the role --
I think what you have to realize is this; you can't capture lightening in a bottle twice. You just can't do it because regardless how good they might be, and they are in their own right, this film will always overshadow any attempt to remake it, and regardless what the Bros. say, it is a remake.
Joel and Ethan Coen will put their spin on "True Grit," the iconic Western that won John Wayne an Oscar. Project reteams the brothers with Scott Rudin, their partner on the Oscar-winning "No Country for Old Men."

I love the original for the breathtaking scenery...and for the Duke...
fab4fan4ever64 1 year ago
A friend of mine (who passed away last year) told me that he knew the Duke when, as a kid in newport beach California My friend met him at the Yaht club and Wayne would challenge the kids to chess games, just like in a couple of his films. My frind said that with Wayne Waht you saw is what he was.

i find it odd in the movie that the only real arkansas boy in the movie plays a texan. anybody feel the same? also i think that the movie was terrible in regards to scenery, the woods they showed in the movie looked like nothing you would see in that region. they made a teriible choice in the choosing of where the set of the movie would be.

DrBreakfastMachine 1 year ago 2
@DrBreakfastMachine Thanks for the reply! You articulated your opinion very well. kudos! Although I disagree with your assessment of the original movie, I appreciate your comments.

Wouldn't trade that trip for all the first class accomodations in the world.

fab4fan4ever64 1 year ago
@chickenygoodness We moved in late September.I was 8 the car was a blue 61 Ford Galaxy, the u-haul was a 5'by 7'. The move was from Saskatoon, Sask. to Fort McMurray, AB. I was also car sick my dad would smoke Rothman's and we weren't allowed to open the windows. The car got stuck; the road north wasn't paved and it was raining. We had to unpack a lot of the u-haul to get unstuck and my Mom dug away the mud with her cast iron fry pan.
We saw the movie at a Drive-in a few days before we moved.

@admseraph It brings tears to my eyes too. To me this song is about struggles you go through when young & overcoming them to find the joy in life.
It tells me that the abuse I went through as a child is over and done.
I made it through (albeit with a lot of emotional scars) and so did a lot of us. We survived and got to see the Sun. The abusers didn't break us.
I remember crying at the movie as a kid. I wanted to see the Sun someday but I never thought I would.
Well I have and I love it!!

You shoot a shotgun using both eyes but not a rifle. You close the outside eye (the eye furthest from the rifle stock) to shoot a rifle and Glen was shooting a rifle in the movie......So GeneMoser is wrong in relation to this movie.

WilliamRowlett 1 year ago
@WilliamRowlett I was taught to shoot to shoot a handgun with both eyes open, but either way works, if one practices enough..
Nash1965H 1 year ago
@WilliamRowlett bullets are not a good idea on the set though some use prop bullets i'm sure. His gun may have been used to shoot blanks. He isn't necessarily shooting at the point of that photo. He should have put a bullet in the head of that guy with the mark of Cain... but made a good shot on Duval with the rifle.
irish89055 1 year ago
@WilliamRowlett Understand the no bullets....but all you need to do is focus on the front sight post....dont have time to close one eye on to focus on the rear sight post.....

Great movie. Beautiful song. The Cohen brothers have their work cut out for them if they think they can improve on this movie. Perhaps they can make it appeal to a younger audience that can't appreciate the greatness of the original, but I doubt they will ever convince me that they can improve on it. I just hope they don't butcher it too bad.

Even so, Bridges and Damon strike me as perfect casting for the remake -- also Brolin --
stevevandien 1 year ago
