I would like to perform something like this, just to say I did it. Nothing wrong with that I think. The audience might be a little confused or...well, frightened. So I would probably follow it with something light, happy, and tonal. Like Mozart. He's safe...predictable.
Do not imagine that Art is something which is designed to give gentle uplift and self-confidence. Art is not a brassiere. At least, not in the English sense. But do not forget that brassiere is the French word for life-jacket.
so when are we actually allowed to change our views from "this is a masterpiece!" to "wow that was pretty shitty"? because i understand what Schoenberg was doing but damn it just can't ever sound right
@biggiebrownn Well it can never sound right cause it s a composition based on the technique "Dodekaphony"...which you should now means, that he just picked out some notes, gave them numbers and then ordered them however he wanted to...which results in this piece.
I wouldn´t describe it as wonderful either, but I think you shouldn´t call this modern, for Schönberg´s time revolutionary, music "shitty".
@KonnytheViolin I'm a music student so I understand his style entirely, I just don't think we can consider it music when it sounds like a cat walking across a sound effects keyboard
@biggiebrownn Well...I guess you are right, but I think Schönbergs "music" is not even labeled as music it is rather a technique...but anyways, it doesn´t sound great, but I just thought shitty is a harsh word =)
@dianava84 im a music major so i know that he was attempting something different for his time but when you get down to it its just a bunch of random noises. for example: john cage's 4'33" is a "song" with no sound whatsoever. we can say what we want about how inovative it was but ive seen roadkill perform that just as good as an orchestra
@biggiebrownn yo sigo viendo este video porque me gusta pierrot pero amigo tu solo quieres ver tu comentario y el de los de mas. why do you keep watching pierrot? freak
These poems are cast in strict rondel form with its scheme ABCD EFAB GHIJA, in which the letters A &B represent the "rondel", offered a firm grip to the composer.
In No. 21 O alter Duft every return of the rondel is associated with the return of a
"main theme", which functions as a musical refrain.
A first rate performance of a very difficult work. Bravo and thanks for posting.
To mongemark: Schoenberg killed nothing. He opened doors which one can either enter or forego. But his work is magnificent on purely musical terms. One simply has to stop expecting triads to dominate in a totally chromatic realm where the difference between dissonance and consonance is only a matter of placement on the overtone series.

Puccini listened Pierrot Lunaire and said : He's fool (è matto!)
but some years after it remembered in Turandot (I act, dead's chorus)
Schoenberg is a genius but he has killed the music
however ... excellent performance (Pousseur)
