Labour didn't raise VAT during its time in office. It lowered VAT on domestic fuel bills from 8% to 5% and reduced the general rate of VAT to 15 % per cent for a period of one year after which it returned to the 17.5% they inherited. No prizes for guessing who put it up to 20% once they came to power despite promising not to.
John Major betrayed the people of this country by ratifying the Maastricht Treaty. However, history will judge him to have been a better Prime Minister in general than many now believe.

Vote Liberal Democrat for REAL, tangible change. After 18 years of the Conservatives followed by 13 of Labour, does Britain not deserve an alternative?
The Lib Dems will offer this - come on, let's move away from the tired old 2-party system.
The minimum wage, 10 years of growth in the economy, crime down, more health and safety in the work place, I could go on, Im suprised you dont notice these things.
The minimum wage was a success, granted. The 10 years of economic growth was a world wide credid bubble which eventually burst. Crime is down depending only on what stats you look at. (and violent crime is definetly not down) Health and safety in the workplace would have improved regardless of which government was in power. Keep em comming..
Turning a £2biillion trade surplus into a £10billion deficit?
Turning every part of Britain into state dependants because we can't do anything without their approval?
A violent youth culture where kids go aroung stabbing & raping each other & victims think its not worth reporting it because "thats just the way it is"?
@thebigkiller2010 Seriously, besides "rebranding" schools, hospitals and themselves, using our money to pay Alistair Campbell to spin & PR idiots into continuing to vote Labour despite the fact most Labour supporters don't even know what Socialism is.
They've introduced a minimum wage that forced companys focus on profits instead of customer service & innovation (in case you haven't noticed, its shit now)
This may sound mad but I think Labour will stay in power, like Major did. Its likely because Labour still has a massive majority and could still retain some of it, to topple Labour the other parties need a hell of a majority. A Hung party will only lead to deals and back handers, its not the way forward. A Hung parliment will not give the country the government it needs in the current problems guys.
i'm 46 years old & there has never been a time before of so much hate & loathing aimed at both Tory & Labour & quite rightly so! THERE IS NO-ONE TO VOTE FOR ANYMORE! What's the alternative?? -
the uk is now is a mess we are in so much debt. no matter what happens at the next election no one can get us out of this mess are national debt is going up 500million pounds a day!!
Brown dont like elections he bottled a leadship battle in 94 against blair he also chicken in 2007 despite looking like a clear winner. P.s. too young to remerber what it was like under the tory what was it like in your opnion?
Cameron is almos to certain to win and it will certainly be a sad day indeed. We need a hung parliament to shake up our political system and really re-distribute the power amongst all the parties so we are not stuck with one mindset.
Black Wednesday had nothing to do with John Major.
The pro Europeans ie Ken Clarke, (Globalist Bilderberg member) Nigel Lawson, Geofery Howe etc, twisted Margaret Thatchers arm into participating in it against her instincts.
Major was a twat but Brown is worse by a mile. I don't know whether to be happy about New Labour's impending kicking at the polls or Cameron being a useless cunt at no.10.
Were they thinking of the country when racking up huge public deficits that will take AT LEAST another decade to pay off? I'll tell you something - they certainly weren't thinking of my generation, who will have to pay for their spending binges in higher taxes and less public services for years to come!
The mis-management of our economy under Labour has been staggering. Unimaginable incompetence! NEVER AGAIN!
What has that got to do with it. For your information, in your words, I am spastic too. I think this is a very derogotrive way to call disabled people like myself and just reflects how much discrimination there still is against disabled people in society.
@2627006 you got your facts wrong there, Recession was caused by other countrys and bankers, Redundancy and repossession actually dropped! it will rise under lib dems and conservatives.
@2627006 New Labour had the strongest economy with uninterrupted economic growth for 10 years running. It was only when the GLOBAL banking crisis struck that Labour left us such a huge deficit. The Conservative government was a complete joke in 97, and I say that as a Tory. You have to hand it to Major though, when he said the economy was strong and not to let Labour ruin it, I wonder if he realised how right he would be.
What rubbish! If you have actually taken the time to STUDY politics then you'd know that Liberals are in the Centre- ie not Left or Right! They favour a mixed economy, less interference from government, and place the individual as the cornerstone of society.
The Liberals are capitalists too, except they don't preach the selfish, se;lf-centred philosophy of Thtacherism. With freeedom comes responsibility, and we all have an obligation to help our fellow human beings- especially those in poverty. The Tories care nothing about poverty; in fact under their policies they'd see it increase. The Tories are dominated by big businesses, while Labour are dominated by the Trade Unions- they both represent interest groups. Liberals represent the people!
i actually agree with some of what u say.... but the lib dems have no credible policys they say one thing and do another and untill they get there act together i wont b voting for them and neither will the vast majority of voters
Not because of policy; but because the public seem to think election time means big change, and as history as shown this doesn't happen. It's not as clear cut as it was a few months ago
The man is an ideological chameleon, no substance, no firm policies. There's no wonder why the Tories have lost so many members since he became leader. Regardless of the public's perception of Brown, the public and even his own party have realised Cameron has nothing to bring to the table.
margaret thatcher in opposition was thought of in a similar way...... thatcherism was not set out on day 1.... it evolved over the years..... cameron has the chance to do similar.... i agree he may not make it.... but i hope he does.
A lot can change in 16 months. It only took one battle for the war in the Pacific to start going the way of the American's instead of the Japanese. It'll only take one thing to push voters into the arms of the Conservatives & Liberals (and the BNP).
- You don't HAVE to, but Sky News uses soundbites all the time nowardays, to the extent that they are now more or less the leaders in "soundbite news"!
Seeing the "promises" by Labour are tragic and hilarious at the same time. They did the exact opposite of the "promises". Prepare for 1997 take 2 in 2009/10, except this time Labour are in for the battering.
Ther pledge in 1997 was no income tax rises for 5 years - we are now 11.5 years in, so I don't see national insurance contribution rises as a broken pledge myself.
Anyway, as far as I am aware there have not been any significant income tax rises since 1997 but rather the basic rate of tax has actually been lowered.
As for education, I have been a governor in a state primary and secondary school for years. Trust me, standards have got much better, so have results.
You actually bought that excuse did you? You're the first one I've seen. Oh another thing I heard today, they're taking the word 'gullible' out of the dictionary.
Haha Tony blair looks young then as do John Major. Saw a TV appearance of Tony Blair the other day all Blair's hair has turned white in fact falling off and balding his face looks like it is coming off. And seems to look like he has aged a 100 years. John Major on the other looks as fresh and youthful and invigorated as the day he left office in May 1997. God I bet Tony Blair and fat gordon brown must be so jealous of John Major these days. Major took Britain from recession to boom times.
No offence but I don't hate Blair or Brown's Labour governments or much as I hated the Tory governments who were in office until 97 including John Major's too.
Only a complete idiot thinks that our country is in a better state now than under Major. It was 'sleaze' that was the Torys downfall, but as another poster said, I'd rather my politicians were caught with their pants down than with their hands in the till. I can forgive someone giving into sexual urges, but not when they steal from me, especially when they are supposed to represent the poor. Sad thing is, idiots up north will still vote Labour regardless of how bad they are for the country.
Probably the biggest mistake of the 20th century, voting out Major for Blair. The economy was buoyant and we had a budget surplus. Now look at us, a decade of bogus economic boom built upon irresponsible borrowing has left us bankrupt.
Even though Major was a failure, he still had more guts than that prat Gordon Brown. There is simply no chance of Brown ever finding the backbone to do what Major did and go and face a hostile public. Brown is a disgrace, for his party, and even worse, for the entire country.
How do you think he changed Britain for the better? All I see is public services in critical decline (I'm thinking in particular of the Police and the NHS), and a generation of politically skeptical and apathetic individuals. The Iraq war has been a disaster and destroyed our country's image around the world. 'New' Labour have also had appauling distain for our Military and Police; it makes me ashamed that they are our government. Brown is a disasterous PM - incapable of making a decision.
Interesting clip. Looking at all of Blair's promises here, it's clearer than ever what a total and utter failure this Labour government has been. They've failed to deliver on any of the lofty promises outlined here. The fact that they are now seemingly unable to attain a basic level of competance under Mr. Brown is just more evidence that 'New' Labour is rotting away from the inside and that Gordon Brown is, poltically, a dead-man walking...
Have you not been watching the news for the last decade? Labour has taken us into illegal wars, developed an Orwell society of CCTV, snooping and media manipulation, endless stealth taxes, propping up a bank with up to £100 BILLION of taxpayers money, losing 30 million people's personal data (that's half the UK population) etc.etc.
I agree Blair was a bad prime minister on many levels; one point you forgot about was how he has turned a whole generation of people into political skeptics, neither left or right.
But I tell you one thing, I would rather have a REAL Labour government than another Blair dictatorship. New Tories=evil, with extra gobshite on the side.
adam boulton has been sky news's political editor for some years now.
its funny how there is now a sort of rose tinted memory of the Major years, when it seemed that there was a disaster every other day when it was happening.
tories lost luton south by miles and luton north as well for good measure.
I think you have to look at perspective. Jonny M's govt may have had several ministers with their pants down but they didn't plug 50 billion quid into a bank which we wont get back...
major won the gulf war, that is rich they could have gone all the way and removed saddam hussein and then we wouldn't have had the iraq war in 2003 and 9000 troops and 120,000 people would have lived.
At least Major won his Gulf war! Blair was an empty vessel, a mirage of spin, wasteful public spending, constitutional vandalism and war. Now we have bottler Brown, it's enough to make you weep.
major was a loon who was weak and thus had no authority. just like blair and brown now. in fact, a lot of these administrations are a total waste of time and they just want money, power and behave like kids when they are in office.
Interesting to compare Major's "weakness" as you put it with Blair or Brown's position. Major never had a majority and was continually being pulled this way and that by the Tory right over Europe. Blair's main problem was just with 1 man, who was supposed to be his old friend!
Nice guy, genuine public servant, honest, straightforward, invented the national lottery, started the peace process in northern ireland, keen cricketer, pleasant wife and a witty after dinner speaker. And that's just 4 starters...
Labour didn't raise VAT during its time in office. It lowered VAT on domestic fuel bills from 8% to 5% and reduced the general rate of VAT to 15 % per cent for a period of one year after which it returned to the 17.5% they inherited. Don't want to be a party pooper for the Blairites, but Major still won more actual votes in 1992 than Blair did in 1997.
Moreover, Kinnock (yes Kinnock), won a higher number of votes in 1992 than Blair did in 2001 or 2005.

Liberals represent the people!

i actually agree with some of what u say.... but the lib dems have no credible policys they say one thing and do another and untill they get there act together i wont b voting for them and neither will the vast majority of voters
thatcheritescot 3 years ago
The Conservatives would not be aggressive at all. Both major parties accept the principles of welfare capitalism

the torys will win next time and the liberals r gonna b cut down.... again
thatcheritescot 3 years ago
Not because of policy; but because the public seem to think election time means big change, and as history as shown this doesn't happen. It's not as clear cut as it was a few months ago
philosopherking34 3 years ago
yes i suppose thats true but it does also mean that cameron has the chance to b great...... i hope he is
thatcheritescot 3 years ago
Cameron? Great? Are you serious?
The man is an ideological chameleon, no substance, no firm policies. There's no wonder why the Tories have lost so many members since he became leader. Regardless of the public's perception of Brown, the public and even his own party have realised Cameron has nothing to bring to the table.
philosopherking34 3 years ago 3
margaret thatcher in opposition was thought of in a similar way...... thatcherism was not set out on day 1.... it evolved over the years..... cameron has the chance to do similar.... i agree he may not make it.... but i hope he does.
thatcheritescot 3 years ago 2
That is true about Margaret Thatcher, but whether her legacy is one of greatness is another matter altogether.

Me too, and i think they will win. I'm sick of Labour ruining everything British.

I don't know what fantasy land your living in, all the polls seem to have the Conservatives leading.
Maybe people finally want people with common sense back in power. Lord knows the Labour party don't have any.

Down to 4 point Tory lead and 16 months to go Draven!
Wolverhampton1 3 years ago
Red Raven not Draven actually.
A lot can change in 16 months. It only took one battle for the war in the Pacific to start going the way of the American's instead of the Japanese. It'll only take one thing to push voters into the arms of the Conservatives & Liberals (and the BNP).

Seeing the "promises" by Labour are tragic and hilarious at the same time. They did the exact opposite of the "promises". Prepare for 1997 take 2 in 2009/10, except this time Labour are in for the battering.
nickalbion1234567 3 years ago
Oh what promises haven't been met Nick?
I know what was in that Labour 1997 manifesto, and I know what state the country was in priro to May 1997.
Do share with us what of that manifesto has not been met....
Wolverhampton1 3 years ago
They promised not to raise taxes but raised income tax. Maybe only for the rich but it's still something they said they wouldn't do.
They went on about education, but while results have gone up, behaviour and standards have gone to shit.
Etc, etc.
theredraven 3 years ago
Ther pledge in 1997 was no income tax rises for 5 years - we are now 11.5 years in, so I don't see national insurance contribution rises as a broken pledge myself.
Anyway, as far as I am aware there have not been any significant income tax rises since 1997 but rather the basic rate of tax has actually been lowered.
As for education, I have been a governor in a state primary and secondary school for years. Trust me, standards have got much better, so have results.
Next point please.....

I dunno, sadly some people are too stupid to not vote Labour and that could cause them to squeak out a victory.

Err Raven, please tell me what the Tories intend to do about the UK's state of affairs.
What's their policies? Do you actually know? If so, please do tell me how it would be so much better under them.
I have yet to hear one policy from them on any matter!

Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are taking Britain from boom times to recession.
markjayaweera 3 years ago 8
The reason we are in recession now is because of the American economy. Not the UK economy.

TrippleNipple72 3 years ago
Probably the biggest mistake of the 20th century, voting out Major for Blair. The economy was buoyant and we had a budget surplus. Now look at us, a decade of bogus economic boom built upon irresponsible borrowing has left us bankrupt.
tatotal 3 years ago
Even though Major was a failure, he still had more guts than that prat Gordon Brown. There is simply no chance of Brown ever finding the backbone to do what Major did and go and face a hostile public. Brown is a disgrace, for his party, and even worse, for the entire country.

Tony Blair was a good PM
accept for his Iraq war
but he changed britain
GrasBlaster 3 years ago
How do you think he changed Britain for the better? All I see is public services in critical decline (I'm thinking in particular of the Police and the NHS), and a generation of politically skeptical and apathetic individuals. The Iraq war has been a disaster and destroyed our country's image around the world. 'New' Labour have also had appauling distain for our Military and Police; it makes me ashamed that they are our government. Brown is a disasterous PM - incapable of making a decision.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that we now have an SNP Government in Scotland! How times have changed!
euan14 4 years ago
Interesting clip. Looking at all of Blair's promises here, it's clearer than ever what a total and utter failure this Labour government has been. They've failed to deliver on any of the lofty promises outlined here. The fact that they are now seemingly unable to attain a basic level of competance under Mr. Brown is just more evidence that 'New' Labour is rotting away from the inside and that Gordon Brown is, poltically, a dead-man walking...
PlatinumFox 4 years ago
Well put. I predict Brown will be forced out by his own MP's within a year or two, judging on how he is fairing in the polls.

You're 11 years out-of-date, pal.
LABOUR OUT! LABOUR OUT! LABOUR OUT!

Maybe you should pay more attention to the news, 'pal'. It is the Tories that now ape the countless mistakes of the Blair regime.
Look a Cameron, he LIVES up Blair's ares for God's sake.

Ken Clarke should be Conservative leader. You know where you stand with him. Unlike Cameron who is someone I just cannot stand. Smarmy cretin.

053bss 4 years ago
adam boulton has been sky news's political editor for some years now.
its funny how there is now a sort of rose tinted memory of the Major years, when it seemed that there was a disaster every other day when it was happening.
tories lost luton south by miles and luton north as well for good measure.

I think you have to look at perspective. Jonny M's govt may have had several ministers with their pants down but they didn't plug 50 billion quid into a bank which we wont get back...

major won the gulf war, that is rich they could have gone all the way and removed saddam hussein and then we wouldn't have had the iraq war in 2003 and 9000 troops and 120,000 people would have lived.

major was a loon who was weak and thus had no authority. just like blair and brown now. in fact, a lot of these administrations are a total waste of time and they just want money, power and behave like kids when they are in office.
RJWooller 4 years ago
Interesting to compare Major's "weakness" as you put it with Blair or Brown's position. Major never had a majority and was continually being pulled this way and that by the Tory right over Europe. Blair's main problem was just with 1 man, who was supposed to be his old friend!
