My uncle Bill was a dispatch rider in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry ,and one of Lady Astor's D Day Dodgers as was my uncle Christopher with the 51st Highlanders. Rather than dodge anything they had as hard or harder a slog through Italy than the D -Day troops did after landing in Normandy. My uncles bill and christopher are among my great heroes!!! Lady Astor on the other hand was a two bit aristocratic nitwit ,a cultist ,a Nazi sympathizer and a worthless skank !!! .
@Macangusagain she was also American, and the first woman to hold a seat in the House of Commons- hubbies seat, in fact when he was elevated to the Lords when daddy died. She had a somewhat patronising attitude towards the "ordinary" folks, and believed that she and her ilk were better placed to "guide" them. She and Churchill never got on. Arguing, Lady Astor said, "Winston, if I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee." Whereupon Winston said, "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it."
Thank you for that. My late father-in-law was in the 51st Highland Division. From El Alamein through Sicilly, Rome, Monte Casino through to finish as one of the first into Belsen. He was a driver for the support unit. He never spoke about it until about six months before his demise. The stories were fascinating at times yet harrowing when he spoke of Belsen. He told me about the "label" D-Day dodgers and I was astonished to learn of "Lady" Astor's comments.

My wife's father was scarred by his experiences at Monte Casino - a hellish nightmare of a place.
