I remember trying an old adjustable cap from an old radio in series with the spark gap. The cap just arced badly. I used a six foot section of PVC pipe so I could adjust it while the circuit was live, no joy.
Thanks Bill. The worn out FL tubes are good for testing (very robust). I already destroyed both 40watt conventional light bulbs. They can 'arc over' internally and then are usless. When this happens a green plasma is seen bridging the gap in the lamp, yikes!!.
