WAR was making the music that has made them legendary before Burdon ever showed up. Burdon was looking for a band with WAR's sound. WAR was not looking for Burdon, so they couldn't have "found themselves" once Burdon left. The WAR of "Lowrider" was founded already. It was like Burdon showed up and he received top billing for essentially doing nothing special. Burdon was not an original member of the group and was not a member of WAR when "Lowrider" was produced.

burdon joined war long before low rider was released. Wars first album as War was the world is a ghetto. that was after the 3 eric burdon/war albums were released. there first major hit was spill the wine from the eric burdon declares war album.

WAR was in existence long before Burdon showed up. Their sound was intact. Burdon had left his Animals and hooked up with WAR. The only impact his vocals had on WAR's music (in my opinion), was to dilute it. Lowrider is WAR's signature hit, far more significant that Spill The Wine or Why Can't We Be Friends. Burdon did not perform Lowrider with WAR. One album was The Black-Man's Burdon and it appears that Burdon was a burden. WAR was successful when Burdon left. Burdon's career went into decline
