Nobody sounds like Klaus. Lots of metal singers have copped Halford, Dio, Coverdale, Dickinson, Bonnet, but NOBODY can sound like Klaus. He is one of the very, very few truly unique singers, ever.
he plays the guitar with some sitar way these unbelivable bends look at the video where he teaches this solo the first note of the shredding is a descendent bend .it makes the continuation of solo complicated.and there are lots of weird bends.playing justhe right notes of this solo its hard, buy not that much.the really hard stuff its the tricks
I love this, but looking at the drummer constantly reminds me of 'The Lonely Island - Jizz In My Pants' video . He hit a snare drum.... jizzed in his pants.
I always was a bit bitter with Roth because he left THE band, but I have to admit that HE IS THE MAN! 70's were their best decade! 80's were great too, 90's medium and 00's a comeback....
But 70's Scorpions were LEGENDARY!!!
Rudy and Roth both kicked ass and composed REAL MUSIC!
This song WAS ahead of it's time. OLD Scorpions were SO GREAT. Many of these bands were great in the 70s and then got old and produced garbage in the late 80s. However, I will always respect what they did in their prime. In the 1970s, like SCORPIONS, AEROSMITH, KISS, AC/DC, JUDAS PRIEST, etc. made today's thrash and death metal scenes possible. Respect the legends...but ESPECIALLY "The Sails Of Charon" and all it's KICK-ASSEDNESS. Haha. HAIL!
Yes Kids - this is where it starts, Mr Roth's fluency was unmatched at the time - how lucky were the Scorpions to get Schenker and Roth?
Schenker always seems to be the guy everyone looks back at most fondly, I think it depends on your favoured style - I always thought MS was a bit harder with a staccato type attack and a bluesier edge. I personally prefer Roth's style - it took several years before anyone in the mainstream could match him.
also, Charon is never mentioned by name, but there is a reference to "the kingdom of light"--presumably there are realms of both darkness and light in the underworld.
that is interesting. my take on Charon is that he's neither inherently good nor inherently evil (though i'm sure he's badass). he's just a guy with a job to do: take the souls of the dead across the other side. the song itself seems to warn against getting too caught up in occultism and maintaining the purity of one's soul. btw, the coins people used to place on the eyes of the dead were "payment" for passage.
Thank you so much for posting this. I had to look it up today as I'd made a mix tape(yes I am stubborn luddite) for the car (02 marquis-yes it was an option then)...my 12 year old daughter LOVES this, wasn't expecting her to like it and am so thrilled. It's cool to see a child recognize timeless greatness such as this magnificent era of Scorpions.
uh, the scorpions, death metal???? excuse me? have you listened to this song's lyrics? they are the complete antithesis of "Death" or "black" metal--polar opposite of Mercyful Fate et. all. this song proves you don't have to be Satanic to be heavy.
I guess i wasn't referring to the lyrics, but the tone of the music. You could very well put some Sabbath type lyrics to this song and they would fit right in.
hmm, well, it is very Gothic/neoclassical. maybe the difference is Uli Jon (who wrote the lyrics) wasnt as depressed as Ozzy. but i think Ozzy would have a hard time with some of the high notes Meine hits here!!!
uli john roth was GOD when it came to guitar. and still is. its just that people fail to realize that this song was written when he was 16 years old. and the whammy wasnt even invented.
just for the record He was 21 when he wrote this was released in 1977!
TAKEN BY FORCE,
also the whammy had been done before by Hendrix,The Ventures & I know they were others but to me Uli is an amazing player, the solo intro just shows you that he was shedding already before others!
I was and always will be a Blackmore fan, but at the same time I always liked the Scorps. For some reason you did'nt hear much about Uli back in the 70's. Maybe because they came out of Germany. Most of the music we focused on then was either English(Purple, Sabbath, Zepplin) or American ( Aerosmith, Nugent, etc.) I'm really discovering Uli for the first time now.
you are in for a treat then. Uli's playing on all those early scorps albums really stands the test of time. there are a lot of similarities between his style and mikey schenker's--i think its fair to say they were both influences on each other. the other main influence on uli is jimi hendrix.
@ice0wn4g what's really interesting is that the guitar hadnt actually been invented and uli hadnt been born yet when he did this. he wrote this song in the womb, which explains the cheesy 70s disco FX. encased in amniotic fluid, he imagined what a guitar would look and sound like, also that his future bandmate would have a receding hairline and cowboy boots would be in fashion. but, uh, yeah, not just the shredding but the melodicism. he and michael schenker are the best ever.
@TheEarnold i agree with the uli and michael schinker, and the melodic point of view that he had, but i'm pretty sure that he was alive when he wrote this. what i was thinking is that he wrote this song anywhere around ten-twelve years before the album came out.
hmm, okay, that's interesting. any reason to think he wrote this at 16? the lyrics seem a bit mature: "strung out on human desire/the dark angel's kingdom is built out of mire/keep on for the kingdom of light/there is no darkness, there is no night"...i know michael schenker was a child prodigy but for some reason i've always thought that uli was born old, like merlin in the aurtherian myths, ya know?
Charon was the boatman who ferried souls across the river Styx to the underworld. so you have classical myth and neo-classical guitar! my take on the lyrics has always been that it's sort of a disclaimer against "black" or dark magic and a testament for "white" or light magic. it's one of the few Gothic metal songs which is anti-evil yet still (obviously) heavy as phuck.
@TheEarnold Uli Jon Roth wrote the guitar parts of this song when he was 16, not the lyrics. i believe that was klaus's job in the song. Uli wrote the base of the song, and Klaus built on it.
hope this helps. if this is incorrect, please let me know
Uli wrote the music & lyrics, normally on the credits as in most Scorpions albums is Schenker /Meine names under the tittle as the driving force ,but on Taken by Force is Roth/Roth under I've got to be free & Sails of Charon as the writer of the music & lyrics!!
right, it's uli's song. this makes sense as it foreshadows the direction he would take in his band electric sun.i'm glad uli didnt sing this song, though. Klaus's vox are ace here.
btw, ice, it doesnt matter to me when uli wrote the song. i guess i was just being snarky. it seems your point is that Uli was a master at a very young age. i can respect that.
yes ,just like he has mentioned before ,he wanted to into another dimention,I think honestly if he had gotten a great singer ,hecould've made it so much bigger ,he sings like an angel on guitar,I still love anything he does,I had the previledge to meet him in 2007,he is so down to earth man, just so humble!

Folks, the licks in this tune really ushered in the neo classical shred school. Buckhead and all others owe their entire style to this tune. Show me anyone else back then playing like this, Blackmore, not really. The moves are bit derrivative of Chet Atkins rolling licks but the scale useage was unpreccendented at that time AFAIK.
@HackerGuitarist you can hear some similar sounds between the uli roth scorpions era and the richie blackmore rainbow dio era both were the best bands with neoclassicalrock sound
@guildx700 CHET ATKINS? C'MON...NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM,IS MORE CLASSICAL FUSED WITH BLUES TECHNICS(BENDS,ETC...)AND SOME MAJOR ORIENTAL,FLAMENCO LIKE SCALES .A VERY PECULIAR VIBRATO,IN ALMOST EVERY NOTE.SEEMS A BIT LIKE A SITAR STILE .DON'T KNOW FOR SHURE.SOME VIOLIN WAY TOO.IS VERY COMPLEX ULI'S STILE...I'M JUST TRYING TO POINT SOME IMPRESSIONS THAT I HAVE,IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.PEACE
If you dont like this song you are a soulless douche! Uli at his best, and check out the moves on Klaus! Yeah, how do you like that bad mother now ladies? Ha! Scorpions rule in the 70's and early 80's, and they will still tear you a new one live! Bow down and pay respects to this band lowly mortals!
This is actually the first time I listen to Uli Roth and hes awesome!!!! This seems like an anthem of belly dancing XD that would be one hell of a belly dance.
The prime times of most groups are the best cause there is progression 'n experimentation. You never can imagine how the next song of the album will sound like. This is magic in 70's. One of the greatest bands ever and those prime times their best for me !
I don't care for much of the Scorpion's stuff, but this is an excellent track. And Klaus' dancing is just fantastic. Take note lads: those moves will get you laid.
Uli's playing always makes me smile, it's so effortless looking. Amazing.
Eddie Vanhalen (and all the guys who are over the top on stage, who can really play also) is (are) stunning also, but it's nice to see the calm approach with such stunning techique. Love this song.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
only this song, dark lady, yellow raven and a few more of the songs of uli are good. but the other songs are authentics shits.
like hell cat, virgin killer, your light(scorpions talking about god) and many more. i prefer matthias jabs with him at least the following songs were better. without matthias jabs the best songs aren´t uli´s compositions
Yea, AXE, I think it's a matter of taste. Uli is unquestionably the better guitar player technically (I personally thinjk he's better than his unofficial mentor, Hendrix), but the Scorps became commercially succesful with Matthias (and his great guitar fills). With Uli out of the band, Rudolph became the main writer, and he obviously has a more commercial bent.
Like I said, both eras were excellent, just different.
yo dude! i love the matthias jabs era, too. but even his era had some less desirable songs. but to say that the other song from the ULI era are shit is out of pocket. ULI is the best. Jabs style is nowhere close to as unique as ULI. If you play guitar, you really need to go back for some lessons. Then maybe you'll understand , why.
uli is so awesome. guys like him and blackmore dont get the respect they deserve. not taking anything away from jabs. but i love the classical vibe. michael schenker rocked too
I find that hard to believe, you must be refering to the young Metallica, etc. new metal fans,I'm sure there are still a lot of fans in their 40's,50's,60's that still worship the Scorpions uli era!
this is the perfect example of how Mtv ruins music. I was shocked when I first heard this song cuz I was like "this is the Scorpions??!!" This just shows how good bands will change their styles just to become famous and get airtime. I admire Uli Jon Roth for leaving them when he did cuz imagine how bored he would have been playing Rock You Like a Hurricane. Damn, I wish THIS was the song they are remembered for.
The Scorps changed before MTV, around 78 Uli left and Klause had throat surgery. MTV didn't come around till 81 or so and there were no videos that I know of from Lovedrive or Animal Magnetism (maybe The Zoo?). But you are right, MTV facked up music really bad.
are there any more of these " early " Scorpions songs that are as awesome as this because this one rules so much... I really like the sound and the lyrics :D
Nobody sounds like Klaus. Lots of metal singers have copped Halford, Dio, Coverdale, Dickinson, Bonnet, but NOBODY can sound like Klaus. He is one of the very, very few truly unique singers, ever.

SuperArschloch3000 1 year ago

It's no wonder Testament covered this song!

The prime times of most groups are the best cause there is progression 'n experimentation. You never can imagine how the next song of the album will sound like. This is magic in 70's. One of the greatest bands ever and those prime times their best for me !

Uli Jon is brilliant on this song.
I love this song and if you like this stuff check out Uli jon Roth's "Beyond The Astral Skies".
Scorps kicked ass back then!

I don't care for much of the Scorpion's stuff, but this is an excellent track. And Klaus' dancing is just fantastic. Take note lads: those moves will get you laid.

you got to admire the technique

At around the 1:17 mark, Uli Jon Roth plays the melody to Caravan by Duke Ellington.

is this the same scorpions that did rock you like a hurricane. because it doesn't sound anything like it

same band different lead guitarist!
AXEFLYERFV 3 years ago
Also, Sails of Charon was recorded in 1978, whereas Rock You Like a Hurricane (from the album Love at First Sting) was recorded in 1984.
Not only a 6-year difference, but also the huge difference of musical style from the 70s to the 80s.

Uli's playing always makes me smile, it's so effortless looking. Amazing.
Eddie Vanhalen (and all the guys who are over the top on stage, who can really play also) is (are) stunning also, but it's nice to see the calm approach with such stunning techique. Love this song.
Thanks for posting this video.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
only this song, dark lady, yellow raven and a few more of the songs of uli are good. but the other songs are authentics shits.
like hell cat, virgin killer, your light(scorpions talking about god) and many more. i prefer matthias jabs with him at least the following songs were better. without matthias jabs the best songs aren´t uli´s compositions
elfunco 3 years ago
You are 24 & a Matthias fan so I can understand your view but to call the rest shit,I don't think!
AXEFLYERFV 3 years ago
And he's obviously not are guitar player...he probably thinks Jabs is cute.
Philmacrakken 3 years ago 3
ULI #1...U are sooo right!
sfdbs07 3 years ago 2
Yea, AXE, I think it's a matter of taste. Uli is unquestionably the better guitar player technically (I personally thinjk he's better than his unofficial mentor, Hendrix), but the Scorps became commercially succesful with Matthias (and his great guitar fills). With Uli out of the band, Rudolph became the main writer, and he obviously has a more commercial bent.
Like I said, both eras were excellent, just different.
ArkRazor1 3 years ago 2
yo dude! i love the matthias jabs era, too. but even his era had some less desirable songs. but to say that the other song from the ULI era are shit is out of pocket. ULI is the best. Jabs style is nowhere close to as unique as ULI. If you play guitar, you really need to go back for some lessons. Then maybe you'll understand , why.
sfdbs07 3 years ago 2
I am only 13 but I love this kind of music!

uli is so awesome. guys like him and blackmore dont get the respect they deserve. not taking anything away from jabs. but i love the classical vibe. michael schenker rocked too

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT: In Germany almost nobody likes "The Scorpions"
GermanMetal 3 years ago
I find that hard to believe, you must be refering to the young Metallica, etc. new metal fans,I'm sure there are still a lot of fans in their 40's,50's,60's that still worship the Scorpions uli era!

Greatest Song ever
rayern 3 years ago
this is the perfect example of how Mtv ruins music.
ShAwDoWoFdEaTh18 3 years ago
The Scorps changed before MTV, around 78 Uli left and Klause had throat surgery. MTV didn't come around till 81 or so and there were no videos that I know of from Lovedrive or Animal Magnetism (maybe The Zoo?). But you are right, MTV facked up music really bad.
