What a great man! Art tatum was an alien because he practically lived on the piano and not planet earth however Oscar did live on earth but despite this fact the fact that they are two of the best jazz musicians ever will always remain.
@bazzatt1 lol foolish response. the difference is, tatum improvised things that most other musicians had to sit down and compose to make. plan and simple. he had a genius mind, regarding music
@bazzatt1 Sorry, bazzat, okay, maybe he can't play it classical style right on the spot (he would probably have to do a little practice first), but hey? Next thing we know, he's doing all those fuck-fast runs, dissonant jazz chords, stride etc. in an insanely faster tempo and make you think as if there were three pianists playing.
Understand that Tatum defeated a dozen of the greatest jazz pianists who ever lived in cutting contests, and garnered praise from even Rubinstein or Rachmaninoff.
Fastest gun in the West. Fastest pianist in the world. Play yourself. Copying Tatum or memorizing classical music is not where it's at. That is not creativity. Make your own music. That is where you get respect. I agree totally with these guys. They have got good ears and memories. You can hear the Tatum influence in Oscar's playing but he is not a clone.
Oscars tremendous talents, great intelligence, wit, and decency as a fine Human being will like his music go into history. Just like his idol the legendary and incomaparble Art Tatum! Now they play together again!
@Etude69 thank you Etude,,ur commenet through me off guard...and i literally cried. Thank you for allowing me to grieve and rejoice with that simple last statement in ur post. That was a stupid comment about HOROWITZ,..,.,
Art tatum could never, ever play the CARMEN FANATASY FOR PIANO in classical style.
There is just a few pianists today that can play that piece at the real tempo, correct.

This is such a great window into such a phenomenal artist, at his peak Oscar was untouchable. Sadly missed.
