wtf in his own presentation he proposes that having the crew above the fuel tank (like DIRECT) is the only way for it to be as safe as ares 1. and in the ares 1 presentation the guy says it was chosen because it is safer than the alternatives. WTF nasa.
AFAIK Fuel now days is not necessarily combustible. As such being near the fuel would be safer than being in another location where there might be combustion occurring as well as other safety issues.
I don't know if this is actually the case for rockets but it is for jumbo jets.
"AFAIK fuel now days is not neccessarily combustible" Fuel by definition is combustible, different fuels are combustible under different conditions, otherwise it would not be fuel, as far as a rocket is concerned anyway, The top of the EFT is full of LOX, a cryogenic oxidiser mixed with the LH2 in the lower 2/3rds of the tank.
72.1mt to LEO.. what are ya gunna do with that? Launch crew? On a side-mount stack? No thanks. Cargo is just competing with commercials, that's not NASA's job.
"Design Approach" slide makes it clear that this is just a strategy to use the remaining SSMEs until they "run out".. there's no more being manufactured, he's talking about restarting manufacturing as a expendable engine.
18m59s and we're talking about propellant depots again. Keep dreamin'.
Understand this. No one will give NASA enough money to ever make a ever growing Ares V into a real rocket. And Ares I is a development disaster. 4 year delay over 4 years of development. Sure...
Only things that NASA can have are sidemount, DIRECT or with a lot of political armwrestling, the heavy versions of EELVs.
Anyone interested in the future of human space flight and the plans for the US to go back to the moon and on to Mars. It may be dry, but in these videos you'll find quite simply the future of our species.
@flobba123 I am sure that there are alot of Nascar, Modern Warfare2 and American Idol videos that you would rather prefer watching than this, the future of the human race.
