Tires were really bad back then so when driving at the limit they used a four wheel drift technique. It wasnt really until about the '60s when tires and downforce began improving performance and drifting as a racing technique started to be less useful. You cant really invent a technique so actually Tsuchiya and Inada did invent drifting as a motorsport.
