SOUNDS GREAT!!! Love the Way it idle's!!!! Just got a 68 Buick and want to have it sound like that!! Im thinking of changing the intake and cam but not sure if its the right thing to do? Any Vids or explaination of what you had done?
@sociogenetics have you ever heard a 400 with a steady idle? i have all the time a 383 can have a steady idle with a small cam but that thing just sounds like its trying to die mine will sound like that if i let it idle at 400rpm, at 700 rpm it sounds choppy but not like its going to die like this thing does and not how do you know im even talking about a 383 stroker i could be talking about a big block dodge
@SuBN01z3RaT Unlikely. It's a rare engine, so chances are you'd want to point out it's not the far more common GM 350 stroked to 383. And why would someone put a small cam in an engine built for HP? Plus, why would you be comparing a stock Daimler big block to a modified small blocks idle? Anyway, when a GM sm has no back pressure they tend to idle really rough on the verge of stalling. My guess is it's a fairly stock engine and, like you said, the cam's too small for open headers.
@sociogenetics yeah but eather way it does sound good when it revs up
and there are a few reasons for under building a 383 i went through it with mine i had a nice sized budget of 7 grand for it then i got laid off and and i had already bought the rotating assembly so i had to skimp on a lot of stuff to get it running with no income
If you want to talk 262 v6's i have one, always run bone stock, the oil changed about every 6000-7000 miles until 3 yrs ago right not it has 156k on it and the only mechanical problem it has is it needs the points filed
well my dads has it bored to a 461 with high comp. cam and the double hump heads with roller rocker and the cam is rated from 3000 to 9500 rpm power band and no shot of nitrous gets about 463 hp with 787 fpot and the intake also is a edlebrock high pro. with a holly 800 cfm with headers and a 2.5 in exhaust with no cat and no mufflers
well the a main reason why it idles higher is because its bored out. bigger motors can handle more fuel at idle in result creating a higher rpm. plus he might have it set to idle high so that way theres not to much lag in the stall converter, which is probley a 2600 stall or 3500 stall i would be guessing
I've got a 307 built in my '70 chevy truck in Park it Idles right at 1,000rpm drop it in gear and it'll idle right about 750.
Some engine specs are:
64CC heads, 1.85 valves, which with that gives me right at a 10:1 ratio Howards Cam Part# 110951 .470/.470 which is a 2000-6000RPM cam, roller rockers, Edelbrock performer intake, 500CFM Edelbrock carb, updated HEI Dist and a Pete Jackson gear drive.
Builders I know have said with what I've done it has over 300HP. I don't know for sure though.

SuBN01z3RaT 7 months ago
@SuBN01z3RaT That'll happen when you have no back pressure on a 350.
sociogenetics 6 months ago
@sociogenetics my 383 was on open headers and sounded nothing like that
SuBN01z3RaT 6 months ago
@SuBN01z3RaT 1-that's a stroked 350.
2-I've never heard a 383 with a steady idle.
3-cool story bro.

he has a huge ass cam in it. thats why it sounds this way. its idleing around 500-600 rpms right were a idle should be at.
tmaxxmonster2 2 years ago
well really lit should be idleing at 700 that what all should be at really ever my dads 454 at 700 and his 55 chevy is at 850
RedneckMcgee94 2 years ago
this motor is a 327 sb.
with a 12-212-2 480/480 comp nitrous cam.
it has a high lobe, for both intake and exhaust, creating a extreamly choppy idle.
this creating a low low idle hince 500rpm idle.
this cam is rated for 2600-7500rpms(power band)
how much work is done to both your "dads" motors?(tell me exact mods, not just cam, rockers) names an specific details.
my 1980 355 stroker camaro, idles at 600 rpms. even my 1997 262cid blazer 272 crane cam idles at 650ish
