  • How did Dr. Gaius Baltar escape the cylons?!

  • 3 minutes you've said nothing..

  • Nice tutorial dude, thanks

  • 2+5=7. And that folks, is how you make music!

  • @gricka31 arbitrary maths equation = how to make a meaningless comment

  • Comment removed

  • How did you get into this? I have never heard of it until I saw my friend post a thing about it.

  • @ptboy18

short story is they taught it at uni ;)

  • @icilianfenner what did you study in uni?

  • HI, do you know how to create a program where there would be a relationship between image and sound ?

  • @12tanaz

I'm afraid my version of maxmsp is out, so this is the end of these tutorials :( But yes, it's perfectly possible in maxmsp - just google 'jitter maxmsp' and you should find some things :)

  • To the Reaktor comment... It is similiar to Reaktor in that both are visually based program building environements but most of Reaktor (not all) is geared towards building synthesizers out of the elements that go into synths. Both are relatively difficult for different reasons. MaxMSP is closer to a roll up your sleeves coding environment than Reaktor is although Reaktor can get like that depending on how you go at things.

  • (sorry,I ran out of characters :D)So...is there anyone here than can give me a hint or something?I'd really appreciate it :).Thanks

  • Hi,I'm a PC user and I've just got a hold of Max/MSP v.4.6 and I was flabbergasted when I discovered the total diference that is between the Mac version's interface and the PC version. For instance,I can't seem to find the 'show grid/enable snap to grid' option anywhere(not to mention that there is no toolbar on the lower part of the screen). And the only way you can lock your view is by right clicking and choosing the 'lock' option-the only problem is I can't seem to find a way of unlocking it.

  • @Kirillov23 I believe i was using max5 here - that probably explains the interface difference. Sorry not to be very helpful :(

  • @icilianfenner Yeh - i've got both 4.6 and 5 on PC. The version 5 is exactly the same as the vid wheras 4.6 looks and performs pretty awfully by comparison!

  • where can i buy this?

  • @15381472 cycling74 . com/downloads

  • @icilianfenner, thanks, i'm sorry to ask because I don't know anything about it, i'm just a big fan of jonny greenwood and I want to sound like him, but is it for free? and do you know if there are different versions and witch one I should get for my computer (windows vista). anyways thank you =D

  • @15381472

Unfortunately, it's commercial- and pretty expensive at that. It should run on windows vista no problem..

If you're a student, they're probably still doing student versions, when you buy it for 9 months (what i did - and whyI can't make any more photos). I think that turned out to be about $90 for me, but its been a long time.

If you're interested in a free version that has a *lot* of the functionality (by far enough to do the johnny greenwood style soloing), check out pure data

  • @15381472

Good luck on your quest with sounding like ' johny greenwood'

  • @WARDISWARD, thanks, It's damn hard to sound like him, I mean my guitar skills aren't the problem this time, i'm just not that good with computers

  • thanks, this was very reassuring and warm.

  • Does this work in the same ways as Reaktor for making music-related stuff?

    Also, which one's more difficult?

  • @xinjinbei

I'm afraid I really don't know! Never used Reaktor.

  • nice! its, perhaps the third time i open max.....and i give you thanks for this tutorial! fuck that ones that just want to critize others intentions. very usefull teachings!

  • thankyou for this vid :)

  • Dude, i appreciate the effort, but dont repeat so much....you keep on talking about the same freaking thing.

  • Never mind neogrant -- thanks for making this.

  • @Macariotron I second that

  • Hugh mate! looks like you have spent some times to tidy up your desktop ;) this is really helpful for beginners like me, keep it up x

    PS: nice wallpaper lol

  • I found this VERY helpful--I'm trying to explain to undergrads the basics of how this software works and this is the best video I found to do that. THank you!

  • christ this is awful. you couldn't have made this any more boring.

  • @neogrant I can see your point - they're slow, and there isn't any visual aids, and they're not scripted.

But these videos are *meant* to be slow, to help people who struggle with this kind of thing catch up. If it's not for you, it's not for you - you simply aren't my target audience.

The visual aids and lack of scripting is time related on my side, so the production value may go up if I get more time. As it is, though, life is too hectic to even make more videos, let alone better ones.

  • @neogrant other than the things I mentioned, though, what could you suggest to improve on them? Less monotony? :P

  • @neogrant it's not supposed to be exciting it's supposed to be educational, I am finding it useful, sorry you aren't but you can't really complain that it's not a rollercoaster or a fireworks display, it's information someone is sharing for FREE

  • @tenderfootV

:D Thanks for taking up for me:

I was really trying to make sure it was understandable to everyone, so I tried to give a bunch of context - and so repreated myself a lot.

  • Can you get out some additional videos on Max/MSP? Videos on introductory use and how to come up to speed on this software are very helpful.

  • @scasey1960 I'm all booked up right now, and my life's pretty hectic. I do want to, though, as soon as i can find the time.

  • sexiest. voice. ever

  • is there any way to multiply on this, i want to be able to enter a tempo, multiply it by however much my patch is set to and then have the eventual bpm. is this possible?

  • @bowdownbristol

Definitely. Instead of using the + symbol, use the * symbol.

  • What if you connect the outlet of the bottom number box to the inlet of the top number box (in the second example)?

    Would it work?

  • Don't do it!

It makes your computer attempt to calculate as many calculations as possible, ultimately causing your patch to crash.

This is called a stack overflow (where the 'pile' of tasks overwhelms your computer's capability to process it), and max will put your project on pause.

if you do this, choose resume from the edit menu, then remove the offending connection. ;)
