actually, when the the engines are first started, the props are feathered. Once they are up and running, the pitch becomes full fine. (This is when the blades appear to be flat) It gives the leading edge of the blade "more bit" into the air and is used after start, during takeoff and on final. Happy Flying everyone!
@flobber777 first off man, improve your English. Second off, you are comparing a regional turboprop with a medium range airliner. Does that make sense to you?? What about the 600 series? Have you seen the cockpit layout?? Its pretty Airbus-like. Finally, I love both machines so.... I aint picking sides, Im just makin a point... you're a retard
@americanblues05 Hi I'm aorry for my crappy english, I'm danish, shall we start writing on danish? Want to see how crappy your danish is. At least I'm able to write on english.
I'm talking about the -500 series. Every person has his own opinion of the things so don't start to slag someone off because he don't has your opinion.
In my eyes the A320 is a flying computer with wings. What's up with you man? Denmark is a free country everyone is allowed to have his own opinion of things!
@flobber777 LOL u erased your original post. No man, english is the official language of aviation, not danish, sorry 'bout tht. A relative of mine went through the initial training for the A320 fam in Miami FL. Do you have any idea of the complexity of that plane? btw, tht relative used to fly the ATR425 before, so there is my reference. Have a good danish day
In curacao i saw a propeller at engine start up flew off like a speed of a bullet across the airport,...Just to imagine what happens if you come near a spinning blade XD
I was doing a Flight Duty on a 42-500 and it had an unfortunate IFSD due to low oil pressure,. Scary stuff as it happened just after the power management went to CLB. The captain landed the aircraft beautifully as if he had both engines.
No dude, all you gotta do is strictly follow the airnav or p & w and hamilton manuals. And be very strong with the ATA 21 cos that could giv you a little extra work and you should know how to trouble shoot. All the best and do well.
Wow! I work on ATR's and Airbus. But the prop looks really awesome during unfeathering. Usually we just see the disc when the condition levers move to AUTO but here you can actually see the prop blades cos of the camera. Gr8 video. You can find everything on you tube.
The ATR is also the only turboprop aircraft that I have ever been on that has used reverse thrust to back up the plane.
On one flight I took this year, it was interesting to see the prop-brake suddenly disengage as they were powering up the plane, and they also used it to quickly stop the prop after we landed, instead of the usual turbine slow spin start-up.
The things you notice when you're an aviation nerd.. :) Thanks for posting this vid, I love the sound of turboprops.
What your actualy seeing here is the prop moving from its feathered position and twisting into a position were it can "bite" the air so that the plane can taxi forward, its interesting to see this as the camera is working at the same shutter speed as the props are rotating so you can see this happening, Great vid!
What A gorgous aircraft. I have seen only a handfull of them here in the south. We get alot of Saab aircraft of the same type rating and everything but they dont look half as good. Ill bet thats a fun one to fly too. Thanks for posting that.
Cool video and awesome aircraft!! many atr's here in NZ. ATR 42 and ATR 72 both use P&W 120 series engines and the props on the 72 are hamilton sunstrand, so im guessing the same goes for the 42 in this video. The 500 series feature the six bladed prop and the older models used the 4 bladed prop : )
You are welcome to my comments. Thanks for the video, I love the sound of aircraft engines. Cannot find out who made these six bladed props, are they Hartzell?
nice video

Hey! I got a vaccum cleaner that sounds just like that! lol. Actually it is quite an impressive sound for a prop plane to make. It is no putt-putt.

ATR 72-500, the ATR 42-'300' has a lower sound pitch, nice vid anyway.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I must add though, that a turboprop doesn't sound nearly as cool as a jet engine.

I think people don't agree with you :D It sounds beautiful in fact.

I think unfeathering also gets the generators into normal operation.
