Am not Arab nor a Jew but i don't understand why one would take refuge in someones home and then later decide that they would make much better owners of the home and kick the REAL owners out. what kinda people would that, kill innocent men, women and children for the sake of a land that doesn't belong to them. Haven't Jews learnt form the Holocaust. Its iron really because the Jews aren't being much better than Hitler ever was, kicking people out of their homes because of their religion or race.
@notperfectbutworthit Your understanding of the Israel-Palestine situation is sorely lacking if you think it's a simple, black-and-white story of people kicking other people out of their homes. Also, you talk as if the Jews just randomly found a refuge in the region. I wonder why they would've chosen that region in particular?
There was never and nor that there is such people-hood as Palestinians, they are A-R-A-B-S who now base their identity on false narrative. Sorry. Learn the truth, the facts. Arabs originated in the Arabia, today's Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Jenin was a the capital of suicide bombers production, and Israel acted in the most humane way preserving civil rights to uproot the terrorists, they even scarify their own by not carpet bombing this terrorist radical Islamist nest.. Abuhawa lies!
Susan Abulhawa like many who now call themselves "Palestinian" found a new carrier and a point to draw attention to their law self esteemed personality. Indeed she like many has been indoctrinated by the false narrative by the Arabs world regarding the valid legal rights of Israel in what was then a territorial area called Palestine, comprised of what is today Jordan and Israel. Get your facts straight Ms. Abulhwa before the spirit of facts and truth put you in the lime light of shame and bad
Khazarians are fake non-semitic "Jews" who are foreigners to the middle east. Look at their faces look at their skin they are white people not semitic. They are no more related to the Israelites than Red Indians are, who Mormons mistakenly believe to be a lost tribe of Israel. I mean most come from what is now Southern Russia. Was Southern Russia ever part of the ancient Jewish state?
@petersz98 I can see that you are full blown apologist for those who distort the truth and facts. More than 50% of Israelis are Middle Easter Jews who are indigenous to the Middle East and Israel/Palestine. Now if you want to be a Jew, you can like anyone on this planet. Israel/Palestine is a state that was legally allocated to the Jewish people because the nation recognized the Jewish People historical connection to that land after WWI. Do read the 1922 Palestine Mandate doc. thoroughly!!!!
So called Mizhrim Jews are also foreigners a mishmash of Berbers, Pashtuns, Persians, Yeminis, Kurds etc. In any case the Ashkenazi are the elite in Israel and it is they who created Zionism and control the Zionist state. The Zionist state is the creation of imperialism and colonialism the 1922 "Mandate" is imperialism promising someone else's state to a foreign people.
Doesn't matter wether Palestinians think of themselves as Palestinians, Syrians, Arabs or Martians. The fact is they are the native people who have lived their for thousands of years unlike the vast majority of Zionist Jews who are foreigners and do not have ancestors there.
@petersz98 Arabs were and never have been the indigenous people of Palestine, Syria, Jordan/Palestine, they all originated in the Arabian, today's Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Search YouTube -- 1920: The year the Arabs discovered Palestine -- Also read Mark Twains book: "The innocent Abroad" written in 1867 when he visited the Holy-land. Read chapter 54 and up to learn that the Holy-land/Palestine was desolated for the most part. You can get this book on line.
Mark Twain also wrote about Greece being a desolate place if you went to the Negev today it is a very desolate place making up half of Israel not much changed in 160 years! A question for you if Palestine was such a "desert" then why according to Paul Masson, a French economic historian, "wheat shipments from the Palestinian port of Acre had helped to save southern France from famine on numerous occasions in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries". Who invented the Jaffa orange?
@petersz98 No matter how you translate it, Palestine was never an Arab country. The Arabs can't even pronounce the later P. the called it falstine. In fact the Arabs prior to 1948 used to despise the word Palestine. They used to say it is a Zionist invention. In fact it was the Jews prior to 1948 that were called Palestinians. But once the Jews re-established their homeland Israel/Palestine, they relinquished the word Palestine and replaced it with Israel. The Arabs then capitalized on this word
@petersz98 Again, Palestinian people-hood does not exist even as we speak. And Palestine was never a sovereign power. And if there any nation that has a legitimate birth certificate on this planet, it is the Jewish people. What about the imperialism and colonialism of the Arab world? How did they get such a land mass as they do today. They chased away the Christians, Jews, Hindus and just about anyone who would not convert to Islam. Most of the 22 Arab countries were newly created after WWI.
Your quite right Arabs come from the Arabian penninsula. Many Egyptians will tell you they are not Arabs, although culturally they are by religion and language same with Levantine Arabs. In the 7th century with the spread of Islam people converted to Islam and adopted the Arabic language instead of Aramaic. But the people who lived in Egypt and Syria/Palestine are still mostly the same people before the spread of Islam so they are indigenous!
It is such a good book and Susan is a wonderful writer with a gift of creating a touching and moving story based on the tragedy of Palestine's demise.
