Thank you for your dedication of the DECADES of running this last vestige of the V&T. I'm glad to see you have not succumbed to the corporate greed and lack of respect for history that the Grand Canyon Railway has shown. My family will be there in Sept 09 (Reno air races) to ride the 29. Thank you sir!
Yeah that timing is off. Hopefully the gear isn't worn out. Walschaerts gear isn't to bad to set, and the performance would be so much better, including less fuel and water usage.
I think so, it seems better but not perfect. I will soon post a short clip of #29 running on Nevada Day, October 31. Make sure you're subscribed and you see when it gets loaded, probably next Friday night. Tonight I will upload the first train to run through Tunnel 2 in decades.
If the Reno is to run again, it needs a new Boiler, fire box, and major repair on her running gear. The Inyo can run, but it can't pull a full train, since it's out of puff at 82 psi, and can only haul 2 cars. The Genoa is steamable, and probably can run at the full 125 psi, but the CA Railroad Museum doesn't think it's worth it because she can't haul as much as Granite Rock #10, and #10 can't haul much, and she would be too expensive, and parts are too scarce for her.
Because it's so old and the boiler was only approved for that pressure by the state inspector. Because the museum has limited funds and wanted to keep the Inyo as original as possible, a higher boiler certification was not tried.
I saw this vid a while back. Very hard core. I live not to far from Virginia City, Nevada and every time I have a free day off of work and have tried to get shots of the steam engine in action it has been not running for one reason or another. They kept haveing all kinds of issues with it. Hopefully it is up and running soon so I can get shots of it in action.
Thanks for watching, I think the lack of younger railfans is a big problem we need to solve. I'm 40 and usually I'm the youngest guy at any railfan meeting by twenty years. Thanks for being involved.
If you're in the Carson City area, you can become a member of the Friends of the Museum, start volunteering now even if it's just polishing brass, and by the time you're 18 you might just be qualified to operate equipment. Whereever you are please stay involved!
I am a meber of the NSRM,but since im soo young i barkey egt to do anything, not to mention im not close by the museam, and whats with all the thumbs down comments?
There is always someone out there to be negative, that's part of YouTube. Perhaps it's because you capitalized your first comment, people don't like that.
Keep up the good work, sorry to hear the Friends don't let you do more.
Yeah,When I first sighned up I was told i would be able to clean the ol Inyo waxing the brass cylinders,And i was joyed to hear that, then i found out it wasernt true wich upset me a bit
You know, I posted a comment last night and it never showed up. I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience with the Friends group, esp after they took your membership money. I suggest you email the Friends president Bill Kohler, I'll send you a private message with his email. Hang in there!
Ok thxs but now im having troubles at home so ill do it in the furue ok,not to mention the gas prices are stopping me from going to the museam evrytime i want, but thxs

Didn't the 29 use to have an SP 6 chime?
ThomasRivette 2 years ago
I'll ask.
virginiatruckee 2 years ago
From the V&T:
"I remember when we got it it was a five chime and the same one is still on it.
Sometimes we install guest whistles to hear them echo off the Comstock walls"

When does the #29 run? I'm traveling to Reno in a couple of weeks and I want to see it!

You know, I have answered this one twice, months ago, and I don't see the answers showing up.
Youtube comments is just one unreliable part of Youtube.

The reverse movement sounds slightly better.

at 5:45 in watching the movement, the fireman's side is off.

I saw some old video of the #29 from several years ago, seems like the timing has been off for a long time. Wish they'd fix it!
virginiatruckee 3 years ago
its a shame to see the 29 down again when i was there a while back they were running the diesel the rest of the season
gaycowboy31 3 years ago
Ed Kazorke kept her in time when he was around.. he really knew his stuff.
bilgerat671 2 years ago
Ed's value to the railroad is debatable, but not here, please. All I will say is that now Tom Gray is in charge you're seeing a lot of improvement.
virginiatruckee 2 years ago
@virginiatruckee
understood...
will he be working on getting the engines in-time over the off season?

To be clear, I meant a different Ed than the Ed in the video.

Is it me, or is the timing off on this engine?....not just in this vid, but others have I noticed this.

You are correct!

her whistle sounds like a mix of 3254's original & C&TS 487.

Sadly the Reno can't run. Old Tucson tryed to run her on compressed air and blew out her boiler.

Did #29 get a new bell & whistle. When I rode her, the bell was higher pitched, and she had a 3-chime whistle that sounded like a Nathan 6-chime.
Chris9017 3 years ago
You know, you must be right. I heard one of the engineers saying he hoped they would get a new whistle.
virginiatruckee 3 years ago
Yeah, its different.. I came here several years back, I think either 1998 or 99... Nice to see 29 again! 5* and favs!

what happened to the old bell
Strasburg1991 3 years ago
I was wrong, it's the same bell, just been cleaned out.

I love the V&T's 4-4-0. My personal favorite is the Reno at old tucson... why can I only find a brief clip of her on here?
pieman97405 3 years ago
I have a dumb question, the Reno doesn't run, does it?
virginiatruckee 3 years ago
no it does not. That locomotive has not run since 1947.
