that big sucker thing is the only thing that scares the crap outa me. one time I saw an atlas moth it was huge it landed on me and it was awsime but that it's big sucker thing came out and went ALL THE WAY INTO MY EAR AND I CRIES SO MUCH
it used to live in our country too. but after the clima changed...
it was more than 10 years ago. so no mobiles phones for making videos..
maybe my mind lies to me, but i remember it in the colour green. after the hummingbirds i used to see too... my grandmother had perfect garden for feeding it... nice vid.
Amazing! Indeed I did not know that this creature existed until just 1 year ago.... I was out tending the garden in the wee hours by the outdoor lamp and thought at first: " What is this? Hummingbirds are not active at night!!" I was initially alerted to its sound, which was very like the hummers' wings... then I perceived those big eyes glowing brightly reflective in the raj light!! Yikes!! How could this be a bird, and at this hour (1-2AM)?!! Oh wow, is that fur or feathers?!!
It is really an amazing moth, looking so much like a hummingbird and producing music that sounds like a full classical orchestra, whilst pollinating flowers.
I have 2 of these every night out by the patio...mainly because I have 4 o'clock flowers growing all over the place, and they (and hummingbirds) love the nectar.
i have one in my garden, it arrived about 2 weeks ago, for the life of me i couldnt figure out what it was since i am from florida now living in Michigan, i thought it was a hummingbird that cross breed with something lol, thank you for posting this, the one in my garden is the same color as yours, i never see more then one at a time so i am thinking there is only one, it just loves my huge butterfly bush i have.
Saw this thing in my backyard, flying in the flowers, thought it was a queen bee from afar.... I like the thing though, it doesn't bite or sting like those motherf-ing wasps!!!
I've got this huge black & yellow Argiope in my front yard today it was eating one of these. It's right in front of my bay window so I have to look at it all the time.
my mom saw one of these on her Impatients one day and swore up and down that it was ababy hummingbird. i had my doubts....hummingbirds do not have six legs and antennae.
I took pictures of a Clearwing today! I never seen one before in my life. And lol true, it does look like a shrimp with wings and little whisk-broom tail. I had the camera set at 1/1000 sec to stop the wings sharp
@corream318 Hmm, I may just call them crawfish from now on then. It's funny though, spell check doesn't mark crayfish as misspelled, but on crawfish it does. lol To each his own I suppose. BTW, you know where "crawdad" is mainly used?
@RoboTekno Well the "correct" spelling is indeed crayfish, it's just in the south if you ever said it you'd get a few smiles from the locals, and I mostly only hear older people say Crawdad. We also call them mudbugs. my hometown has an ice hockey team called the Shreveport MudBugs. Crawfish is still the number one word for em though.
@RoboTekno Texas... I remember seeing a few of them when i was little, and when I asked the people who were supposed to know... he always said crawdads..... almost everywhere that i went they were called crawdads... only until later I heard them referred to as craw-fish... and then later as crayfish... Still think in my head "crawdad" but when I talk to people about em I usually refer to them as crayfish... (it sounds more intelligent) I think its regional, warshing winders is another one.
@RoboTekno , they are incredibly beautiful, with their dark lace see thru wings. We saw our first one yesterday and didn't know what it was--a bumblebee?, with those antennae, or a hummingbird, with its green and red. But it's very delicate and lovely. That "crayfish" looking tail is one of the tip-offs its a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth, and not a hummingbird. I had to look up 'hummingbird looking moth' to find out what it was!
This is a great video! Where have you seen it, is it in the UK whereabouts in the UK. I'm thinking of making this hummingbird hawk moth my subject for my thesis film so if anyone has any info of where I could see them in the UK... would be REALLY appreciated!!!! Thanks!
dolph - In the UK, we have the Broad Bordered Bee Hawkmoth - pretty much identical. There are fairly scarce, but Google it and you should get a good idea where to start looking - sunny woodland rides, right about now would be a good start. :o)
Beautiful video! I saw one of these for the first time recently. When I went to get a better shot a hummingbird attacked it and I never saw it again:(
I have one of these. That is the plant I have outside my kitchen window and I thought it was a bee. Then I looked and saw it had a fanned tail. So it is a moth? Or is it a hummingbird?
Ever since I was a kid, I've always went outside when it was time for them to come around....Picked a flower.....and held it out....Hand feeding them is one of the most awesome, memorable things.
