The KKK is a punchline, and bloods and crips are generic criminals somewhere. Also, violence and drugs are just statistics in people's eyes. furries are just different enough to stand out and inspire xenophobia but, not being criminals, they don't fade into the background. It's easier to forget a statistic than a furry.

If you look at a lot of people who like these characters, you can see that many are indeed homosexual (no offense to anyone. . .) but people are homophobic, and that is probably where the term "furfag" has come from. I myself found it interesting to dress up as one of these characters before this terminology came into my mind, and I understand that someone bringing down your interests is hurtful. Not making these comments a bother is the best way to move on, criticism comes in all forms.
